Accidentally gave 7 month old unwashed berries

I just realised that I forgot to wash some blackberries (from a packet) that I mixed into my 7 month old's breakfast... How worried do I need to be? Turns out she didn't like them anyway so only had a little taste. Argh!

I never wash fruit. I’m still alive, as are my 5 and 2 year olds.

WWYD2020 · 02/10/2020 09:54

I’ve never washed fruit in my life

TeddyIsaHe · 02/10/2020 09:54

I have never washed a berry in my life! Dd and I have survived quite well.

Not worried at all. All will be fine!

Audreyseyebrows · 02/10/2020 09:58

Christ, mine shoved them in straight from the side of the road. Opps.

NappingNightmare · 02/10/2020 10:18

Thank you all. I am a panicker Blush
Seems that this is definitely something I don't need to stress about!

Lol. I was like this with my first.

My second eats dirt

FourPlasticRings · 02/10/2020 10:20

I do wash them religiously, so get the anxiety, but honestly, the things kids put in their mouths... Unwashed berries are the least of your issues.

Mrsjayy · 02/10/2020 10:20

What made you panic ? Most pre packed fruit is washed especially berries

IME the vast majority say to wash before eating, I imagine because they're often sprayed with ripening hormones in transit. Also to get rid of any residual pesticides or fertiliser.
Mrsjayy · 02/10/2020 10:24

I think they go through a wash though especially if they are factory packed ? Anyway the baby didn't eat them and the op can wash them next time.

I don't think so. I might be wrong, but I think washing fruit causes them to rot more rapidly unless you can thoroughly dry them afterwards. Can't imagine the factories going to the effort when they can just slap a 'wash before use' label on.

Shockare we meant to wash fruit?!

Lol My little one loves dirt, fluff from the floor, etc etc. Its good for their gut biome right?! I guess ideally you could wash berries before you give them to your baby but i imagine we've all got better things to do with our time. Plus picking wild blackberries and raspberries and eating them while they're still warm from the sun is a true joy in life!

Yes! Does no one read the packaging? Obviously excluding stuff that peels like bananas and oranges.
Spidey66 · 02/10/2020 10:38

I never bother. I'm still alive.

The only things I do wash are vegetables that grow in mud and are meant to be eaten raw to get the mud off. So celery, lettuce etc.

Snow234 · 02/10/2020 10:45

I wouldn’t worry.
My 7 month old has put worse in his month, like trying to suck the dogs ears recently and his still alive. lol.
Unwashed berries is nothing compared to what she will get up to over the next few years.
The joys of parenting lol

ApolloandDaphne · 02/10/2020 10:46

I am another one who has never washed a berry in their life. My DDs never came to any harm from eating them.

aprilstory · 02/10/2020 10:49

Am I the only one who’s shocked to learn many people don’t wash fruit? Of course I wouldn’t panic in OP’a situation, but never washing fruit is just 🤢

Factory packed fruit does NOT mean they’re pre-washed! You will be surprised to see how much dirt comes off. You won’t die from eating dirt, of course, but I don’t choose to eat it.

No, April, I too am very surprised.

My son ate a scab that he found on the floor of a soft play place.

I'm sure the berries were fine Grin

HasaDigaEebowai · 02/10/2020 10:53

I remember attending a parents welcome assembly when DS1 was in reception and watching him sitting on the stage picking the bits of dirt out of the treads of his shoes and eating them. Your DD will live OP.

BakedBeeeen · 02/10/2020 10:58

Washing fruit is one of those subjects like changing towels or hoovering. Everyone is different! I have never washed fruit, I just make sure the kids don’t pick blackberries from too near the ground in case a dog has weed on them Smile
