Accidentally gave 7 month old unwashed berries

I just realised that I forgot to wash some blackberries (from a packet) that I mixed into my 7 month old's breakfast... How worried do I need to be? Turns out she didn't like them anyway so only had a little taste. Argh!

I wash her berries but my toddler also likes to shove her fingers in the sludge that comes out of water pipes in the stone walls on our road. We have different standards.

I wouldn't worry! No harm will be done.

I view giving unwashed fruit to DS as an important, if not essential, part of developing his immune system.

@aprilstory

Am I the only one who’s shocked to learn many people don’t wash fruit? Of course I wouldn’t panic in OP’a situation, but never washing fruit is just 🤢

Factory packed fruit does NOT mean they’re pre-washed! You will be surprised to see how much dirt comes off. You won’t die from eating dirt, of course, but I don’t choose to eat it.

I'm with you, I once freaked out at my husband because he have DS blueberries without washing them. I always thought it was the pesticides you needed to worry about.

Blimey, as kids, we used to eat them off the bushes!
OP, please don't worry- if you want to wash fruit, do, but your little one will be fine the odd times you forget.

If you have pets, I wouldn't worry about unwashed fruit. Nothing worse than picking up a dark bit on the carpet, thinking it has just dropped out of your chocolate chip cookie, to then discover it is a piece of soil recently dropped out of the pads of your cats foot, probably from taking a recent poo outdoors.

I always wash bought berries - to wash off pesticides as much as any dirt. Same with apples, etc.

But your baby will be ok, OP. Don’t worry. X

Yes it's mainly the pesticides I was thinking about, and how little she is. I wouldn't think much of it if I'd eaten them myself. Some of your stories have given me a good laugh though (in horror, obviously Grin)
Really appreciate the reassurance.

We eat them straight off the bushes out in the countryside.
No one I know has ever got sick (well apart from gorging on them)

Just another voice joining the "never washed fruit, never worried about it" brigade. My mum gets a bit horrified about it. I remain unmoved!

OverTheRainbow88 · 02/10/2020 12:59

I don’t get why people don’t bother washing; unless you buy organic. Takes 20 sec to wash of pesticides etc.

But OP I wouldn’t worry as a one off, especially if they didn’t eat much anyway.

Glad I'm not the only one who's done this! Grin
