Shamelessly posting for traffic.

I have wondered all day whether to post this or not but ultimately it might help save one person from viewing something they shouldn't.

For every single one of you who allows your young child to use TikTok please be aware that there is a video circulating today of a man committing suicide. Yes, he did it in a live stream and the video is all over the place now. TikTok is that one social that you cannot prevent you children from seeing ANY content. If you allow them the app you allow them the content.

Get your child off the app now unless you wanted them traumatised for life after watching someone shoot their brains quite literally out.

TikTok is a haven for nasty paedos.

I’m amazed parents let their kids post things.

WarmHeyerette · 08/09/2020 02:22

Thanks OP, you're getting a lot of defensive BS thrown at you but it's really useful information.

AgnesNaismith · 08/09/2020 03:05

OP doesn’t owe anyone anything, you don’t have to apologise or be ‘nice’ OP.

TikTok is a disgrace, I won’t let my children anywhere near it due to the unsafe content and the fact a local police officer, who deals with child safety, told me that many cases involve paedophiles using it to groom children. Same with Snapchat!

I actively encourage my children not to play with those whose parents are negligent enough to let them have access to it.

Iammariedtojacksparrow · 08/09/2020 04:28

OP

I completely understand what you are saying and I think my son (8) is in the age range you are talking about. I am not brilliant about technology, mainly because I am lazy, but this is just one more example as to why he does not have tic tok and despite how careful I am with him on the internet, I may have to limit further what he sees because I know damn well this video is going to pop up on everything eventually

AbsenceOfBlinkinLight · 08/09/2020 06:51

I’m in the same position as Time2Change2. But I’ve still not allowed dd(12) to have the app, and have talked to school about blocking it (and other things) on their WiFi to make it harder to get at. I figure it’s best to prevent what I can and lower the risk, than to just accept that she’ll see this stuff. Plus, of course, lots of education and talking about how to be safe online.

Natsku · 08/09/2020 08:07

I told DD before she left for school to warn her friends to keep off tiktok for the next few days at least, hopefully they will listen.

MessyMummy15 · 08/09/2020 08:51

I HAVE SEEN THE VIDEO... (on Tik Tok)

Sorry that's in caps but I wanted to get readers attention and hopefully explain better to some of the mums who don't use it themselves.

Last night I saw the news article on Facebook about it. The article stated that it's popping up on the "For you" home page. This home page shows reccommened videos on what you watch.
My reccommened videos are basically all dance and music videos as that's all I watch. I DID NOT search for this suicide video! I simply scrolled down my usual home page and after about six dance videos there was a 15 second reaction to suicide video which I watched. It didn't show anything graphic just a young girl crying and talking about watching it.

Since watching that 15 second video I found that basically every video on my For You page was all related to death, suicide and mental health issues. In a 10 min scroll I came across the full video of this poor man shooting himself in the head with a rifle. It was horrific!
I wish I hadn't seen it and it made me feel awful. I can't imagine a child seeing that!!
After that my For You page was filled with videos of young girls being choked, a man overdosing on the floor choking on his own vomit.
It was 3am this morning and I immediately called both my sister in laws and told them to remove tik tok off their daughters phones.

I am honestly shocked that this content is getting through. Like I said I DID NOT search for it. I simply scrolled through my usual home page but this stuff is on there and it's not ok.

Please please don't think I'm exaggerating. If I could see it. Then your children can to.

lljkk · 08/09/2020 09:11

Hmmm... I scrolled thru 25+ tiktok videos on my phone yesterday eve, which was after I saw this thread & didn't see any suicide-relevant content.*

My tiktok is mostly cute animals, moderate parkour & mums embarrassing their kids.

*Not unless you count the parkour, I suppose.

lljkk · 08/09/2020 09:15

Just checked it again... fishing, cats failing to leap, vehicles crashing, haystacks falling..

ChickenwingChickenwing · 08/09/2020 09:20

@lljkk

That's good. I don't know what point you are trying to make saying you haven't seen anything inappropriate. As far as I am concerned that is a good thing. It's not however a fail safe guide that someone else will not. The 'but I don't see anything' argument makes no sense. It's not you I am concerned about. I'm glad you have good content in your FYP, but please don't try to use that factor to dismiss a very serious point.

I'm not just addressing you, even though I tagged you, a few people said similar yesterday but I really wasn't able to form a good response so I want to say this to everyone who sees nothing but good content now.

@ChickenwingChickenwing

Sorry not a few days, since yesterday. What the hell. I'm so angry that a post like this trying to warn parents so their kids don't see brains being blown out needs defending I have mixed my stupid words.
And you just had to say that, right? With no trigger warning at all, no respect for anyone on here who may be triggered by the method.

Your posts got progressively hostile, and you just blurted out his method with the absolute lack of respect and lack of "warning" you are supposedly trying to get across here...

Well done op! I could have done without knowing that!

lljkk · 08/09/2020 09:47

If I could see it. Then your children can too

My point is that it isn't auto-appearing on every feed.
tbh, I reckon DS has seen more graphic violence in Deadpool snips.

Nobody is suggesting it is on every feed.

I sincerely apologise. It didn't even cross my mind about a trigger warning and you are the first/only person to point it out. I really am sorry for that and I will ask MNHQ too add one straight away.

OP posts:
ChickenwingChickenwing · 08/09/2020 09:57

@differentnameforthis

I have repaired my thread and asked for a trigger warning. I genuinely did not intend any harm with this thread. I am so so sorry Sad

OP posts:
differentnameforthis · 08/09/2020 09:57

@MessyMummy15 Seriously?

You want your video to stand out, and with no trigger warning your blurt out his method?

Yet you came on to warn how horrific it was? Did you need to post the graphic description?

ChickenwingChickenwing · 08/09/2020 09:57

I have reported the post I quoted too, I didn't realise I had quoted it.
ChickenwingChickenwing · 08/09/2020 10:01

@differentnameforthis

I'm actually wondering whether to report this again and ask MNHQ if they think it should be removed. There was absolutely no ulterior motive here. I simply posted to warn people and try to get them to understand what their young children can see

yetanothernamitynamechange · 08/09/2020 10:01

"my kids see more graphic violence in deadpool snips" yes but Deadpool isnt real. Its actors an CGI and fake blood (and even then I wouldnt be thrilled if my young child saw it). The video in question is a real person really doing something terrible. Even some of the less extreme but still upsetting videos (eg reaction videos to the video, people hurting themselves) are also real and therefore more harmful. Unless a child isnt emotionally mature enough to make that distinction in which case Id argue its actually more harmful.

Justwhyyyy · 08/09/2020 10:02

I've read up to page 4.

I think the OP did come across badly in the first few posts but I do understand the angst and anger if she'd just seen the video and felt traumatised.

I came to MN to give people a heads up about the same thing but then found this thread.

My children are too young for phones and social media but I know of parents whos children do use it.

Personally I wouldn't be allowing my children to use SM until I can no longer enforce it.

I know of two little boys ages 6 and 8 who are allowed unlimited access to roblox which is no better imo. I don't think children should be allowed to use these things, at least not on their own without supervision.

The deceased man's mother watched the live as she didn't know what he was about to do, that image will stay with her for the rest of her life. I'm disgusted to have seen people actively seeking out the video online because they wanted to see it.

I'm 26 and remember being allowed unsupervised access to the internet from the age of 12. Some of the things I saw will never leave me.

differentnameforthis · 08/09/2020 10:03

FWIW op, your message is on point.

Way too many kids given access to the internet with no guidance whatsoever.

This would be horrible for an adult to see, let alone a child.

I understand. I have reported our posts, so hopefully they see them soon.

It's clear to see you meant no harm... I may have reacted a little harsh too..

ChickenwingChickenwing · 08/09/2020 10:09

I have reported again and asked MNHQ to decide whether the thread should be removed or a trigger warning added.

For the record it cane from a good placers. I have apologised multiple times and explained who I am trying to reach. I have been called many names and I haven't reported a single post doing that. I'm happy to let everything stay and I am big enough to realise the way I spoke didn't come across the right way.

I wholeheartedly apologise for the lack of trigger warning though, I really didn't even think about it and I did t mean to upset anyone.

Let's see what MNHQ think. It would be a shame if it is removed completely as there is some good information in the thread, but I completely understand if MNHQ decide that to be for the best
