Shamelessly posting for traffic.

I have wondered all day whether to post this or not but ultimately it might help save one person from viewing something they shouldn't.

For every single one of you who allows your young child to use TikTok please be aware that there is a video circulating today of a man committing suicide. Yes, he did it in a live stream and the video is all over the place now. TikTok is that one social that you cannot prevent you children from seeing ANY content. If you allow them the app you allow them the content.

Get your child off the app now unless you wanted them traumatised for life after watching someone shoot their brains quite literally out.

Yeah I wasn’t disagreeing op. My kids don’t have tictok WhatsApp Facebook or Instagram I was just saying it’s everywhere to make people aware to check links.

ShinyGreenElephant · 07/09/2020 20:19

@yetanothernamitynamechange maybe thats the case and if so I will check again. I've put parental controls both on the app itself, on the iPhone itself and I also have software on it to block content- shes a sensitive little soul and has never mentioned seeing anything that's bothered her, neither have I ever seen anything inappropriate when she scrolls through it endlessly next to me. But I will have another look into it

Paddy1234 · 07/09/2020 20:19

I actually enjoy TikTok but can actually understand how it manipulates cleverly what you watch. So I get a lot of food, cleaning out swimming pools and randomly LGBT (is it implying something!)

However I feel fortunate that my children are past the age of consent. I do not know how I would feel if they were younger. I did ban snapchat for a couple of years but as my daughter is over 18 and pays her own bill I have no control.

Mashingthecompost · 07/09/2020 20:20

Thanks for the post, OP. I'm all for posting to be safe and risking some eyerolls. I've not got it and my small is too small so far - what worries me personally, as PP have said, is cross-platform sharing. If people are concerned, have a google of internet stewardship and staying safe. I wonder whether the NSPCC have a pack, like the 'pants' one, for various ages. Going to look it up now. Agree, though, that this doesn't help with stuff that an algorithm picks up and spreads about.

I remember a colleague of mine, before I had kids, told me how she told her kids that once you've seen something you can't unsee it, and had a chat with them about the stuff that they could come across online. I was a bit like 'uh, ok' at the time but she was right.

OneForMeToo · 07/09/2020 20:23

It’s not just seeing with this video which is terrible but Depending on the version the can literally hear the blood pouring out according to a certain Facebook page which is a sound you won’t forget either.

icedaisy · 07/09/2020 20:25

I agree OP. My Dd is tiny so I wasn't familiar with it.

My best friends Dd has become chronically unwell with anorexia during lockdown. She is a beautiful, sporty, academic 14 year old. Very shy and quiet.

During one of the many tearful discussions I asked if there was any social media type platforms that may have been a problem. TIk Tok was part of the issue. Thousands of adverts and videos targeting weight loss in teens and products and name calling.

Now I'm not saying for a minute it caused it, but it certainly has not helped.

I've read a great deal about it since her illness and like you and others OP am horrified at its content.

LoveNote · 07/09/2020 20:26

yes its very graphic. it was actually in my inbox.....sent randomly, so watch out for that too

its a good few minutes long so hopefully unwitting kids will click off.

I'm ex forces and found it hard to watch, he addresses his mum,so sad

Pieceofpurplesky · 07/09/2020 20:28

OP I am 100% behind you and actually saw the video earlier on my stream on TikTok. I usually watch nothing but Gordon Ramsey and various comedians making idiots of themselves do it was a real shock - at first I thought it was some sort of spoof (before the end) as I hadn't heard of it. I will never unsee it. I have warned DS who will now not watch it as he hates anything like that.

Poster like moondust who say it don't use social media but yabu' have no clue what our kids are watching. One of the disturbing trends is that of young girls as subs in relationships in collars glamourising s and m.

ChickenwingChickenwing · 07/09/2020 20:32

I think that poster just wanted to be horrible to me tbh.

@AbsenceOfBlinkinLight

“ I disagree. I think you can control what an 8yo sees eg by putting a passcode she doesn’t know on her brother’s phone. You’re choosing not to. That’s your parenting choice.”

She plays games on his phone. Sometimes he gets notifications. She might accidentally tap on it and open something she shouldn’t. Do you not see how easy it is for a young child to access something they shouldn’t? My parenting choice? Please! Have you not heard about momo? Or about the images of suicide in the middle of a peppa pig video? This stuff is everywhere! It’s snuck into kids content and slips through filters. Watching a peppa pig video is hardly giving a child access to the worst of the internet for God’s sake.

All I’m saying is don’t think your job is done just because you’ve restricted access to an app. It’s not a foolproof solution to a very big problem we all face as parents right now.

Natsku · 07/09/2020 20:36

My 9 year old has it, all her friends have it so I thought it couldn't be that bad if all their parents allowed it but going to have to delete it now. She will be gutted, and I'll have to explain why (about the video) so she understands. She already hates me right now because she has a 3 day screen ban so now is as good a time as any to be hated some more.

MarshaBradyo · 07/09/2020 20:36

It sounds so bad. I would not want to see it let alone any child or teen.

But also SM can impact negatively on adults. Crazy to just let dc have access as their friends do.

Mashingthecompost · 07/09/2020 20:37

I thought Momo was fake?

mollypuss1 · 07/09/2020 20:38

@ChickenwingChickenwing my point was that if the purpose of your post was to protect children from seeing this then you should be equally concerned that it is on all platforms but you seem only concerned about it’s presence on TikTok. If a parent allows their child to watch anything unsupervised on one platform they are likely to be doing the same on all platforms.

CulturallyAppropriatedName · 07/09/2020 20:42

I have tiktok so I can monitor what my DD posts (she has a locked account with a few friends and isn't allowed to show her face on her videos). I never randomly scroll. I just did, as an experiment. I got what I assume might be "the" video within 5 mins or so. Very dark screen with a "he shoots himself live" or similar written across it. I didn't watch it of course. But absolutely horrified it was there; sandwiched between Harvey bringing Katie Price ribena in bed and a woman doing a before-and-after weightloss video....

LoveNote · 07/09/2020 20:42

people are now posting their reactions to watching the video.....this should not be allowed either! what is wrong with people?

Coriandersucks · 07/09/2020 20:42

Social media has a lot to answer for - I am beginning to think the pros of bringing people together are far outweighing the cons of people (old and young) being exposed to things that can really disturb their mental health and the lives of those around them.

If facebook, twitter and TikTok were removed tomorrow I think the world would be a better place. I hope to god they’ve at least improved by the time my children are old enough to use them.

And just to balance things out, I love TikTok and have never come across anything dodgy myself, I did see someone post today about the Suicide vid but I scrolled past assuming the original had now been deleted. I hope now that it has.

lemorella · 07/09/2020 20:45

I saw something that really unsettled me a few days ago.

There is a youngish man who is 'duetting' with only baby videos. Babies sucking on things parents give them (imitating breastfeeding motion), babies in the bath, babies being changed into outfits etc etc. All quite innocent and cute videos on their own but in his duets he just stares and nods and smirks at the camera, doesn't say anything and I can't quite describe it but it's very unnerving, like his intentions are dark.

I reported him but he isn't breaking any guidelines.

I really can't fathom why any parent would chose to put their child all over an app, sharing private and intimate family moments that any stranger can access.

And absolutely no young children should be on it.

PoppyRae · 07/09/2020 20:49

@Mashingthecompost yes, the original Momo thing was a hoax but it didn’t stop sick people from posting pictures of the thing all over the internet and in the middle of kids YouTube videos.

ChickenwingChickenwing · 07/09/2020 21:00

my point was that if the purpose of your post was to protect children from seeing this then you should be equally concerned that it is on all platforms but you seem only concerned about it’s presence on TikTok.

You missed what I was saying in your desperation to find fault. I'm talking about young children who will not search for this on other platforms because they simply do not know how to. TikTok is absolutely my concern due to the fact it pushes content to you and you cannot control that. In the main you can with other platforms. I did however acknowledge it is everywhere and not just TikTok, it my immediate concern was for primary school children on TikTok.

I don't appreciate you coming back a second time to have a go at me for something which I did out of concern and nothing else. There is no need.

Just another example of things we don't want our children to see.

Monitoring what she posts is great, but you cannot prevent her from seeing things, as you doing out when you went on yourself.

This is great. It's so hard to know the best way forward for our kids but this really is a horrid horrid app and a lot of parents just don't know.

oh god that's creepy @lemorella,, i remember a few years back when youtube kids was a massive peado fest, i uninstalled it as restricted mode is safer. the stuff that was allowed to get through the kids bit Confused some youtubers spent years trying to draw attention to it. Anyway....
, i once saw a man in a nappy who had filled a Potty with sweets making baby noises and eating out of it, i was like Report!!!
