This train journey is 4 hours and no changes. I don't fancy changing her nappy in the toilet on the train Urghhhh

hewlettsdaughter · 22/10/2004 12:30

Is the car seat for the train MrsD, or for when you get there? If for when you get there, can your sis borrow one? That's what my mum did when I went up to Notts on the train recently. When ds was small he slept in a drawer (taken out of the chest!) at both his grandparents' houses.
By the way, you can book for aquababies next Friday now if you want (I did, when I came out of this morning's session).

Chuffed · 22/10/2004 12:30

no i wouldn't either they are always disgusting although I haven't ever pulled the change tables down so they might be OK.
You can get that hand disinfectant stuff from boots that you don't have to wash/dry you just put a bit on and rub it into your hands to get them clean, that'll save having to worry about dd when you are needing to clean up.

Mrs D (travelling light with children is one of my favourite topics, being a long-time backpacker before and sometimes with children):

don't bother taking handblender. either mash with a fork, keep mashing til she accepts it. or just buy jars for those days - buy them there don't take. remember you can buy almost anything almost anywhere - food, nappies.

if she rolls, wedge her into a corner with furniture. ie "make" a cot.

I would take the small car seat for this trip and wedge her in, she's not very heavy is she? It'll be much more portable.

we took dd1 on an overnight train journey at 9 months! it was fine. that was in a spacious Australian train though.

spots · 22/10/2004 20:50

Mrs D, you might be able to borrow the odd thing from Mumsnetters who live in Scotland... if you are going to Edinburgh I might be able to help...

handlemecarefully · 22/10/2004 23:21

Bless you Dot and Chuffed at missing your babes - painful isn't it. Really feel for you....I'll be right there with you in two weeks time when I start work again (8 November), will only be doing 3 days per week but it will still take some getting used to it.

Mrs Dolittle - does your buggy / pram recline right down to flat; if so couldn't dd sleep in it?

Tanpol · 23/10/2004 00:42

My DS sometimes gags on savoury food (never on sweet stuff - I wonder why!). What I do is to blow in his face . He automatically takes in a breath, and the food goes down!

Tanpol · 23/10/2004 01:04

btw, thanks for this thread. I'm picking up loads of ideas for foods etc for ds. I have Annabel Karmel's book, but it's nice to hear what other mums do. I think ds is getting a bit bored with plain veggies for lunch - some of the recipes here sound good. When is it ok for them to have salt in their food - if I puree or mash stuff I cook for the rest of the family, it has added salt. Is that not a problem?

Thank you spots for your kind offer. I think we will be okay though. Dm said I wouldn't need a hand blender and that mashing was sufficient. My thought at the time was that the veges would have to be 'very' cooked - I always eat them crunchy but as you have all sensibly pointed out "It is only for a few days". I do tend to make mountains out of molehills I am afraid.
It's Saturday, just dd and myself today. Dh has gone into London to catch up with a buddy, so a great opportunity to catch up on the MN goss. It is a horrible horrible day here, wet, wet, wet and wet.

LucyJones · 23/10/2004 13:47

Hi MrsD. I gave ds some chicken, carrot and parsnip mashed up for lunch and he didn't look too impressed. So I drenched it in formula and he seems much happier but it was so runny it went all over the kitchen - lol

MrsDoolittle · 23/10/2004 14:00

Hi Lucy. Dd is asleep at the moment. She has a cold and she usually sleeps loads when she is not feeling well

LucyJones · 23/10/2004 15:10

My ds always sleeps a lot in the day when it's the day after he's been at nursery. I think it's his way of catching up as yesterday he only got an hour's sleep at nursery!

LucyJones · 24/10/2004 09:10

Good morning! Everyone must have been doing exciting Saturday night things last night cos you have all gone quiet! I just watched The X-factor and went to bed

Tickle · 24/10/2004 09:41

Morning everyone - quiet here as dh has taken dd1 and ds to church (his dad is retired vicar, so honour bound!) but dd2 and I staying home and looking out at much dampness outside - and catching up with this thread!

The Tickle household had lots of fun last weekend with ds's 4th birthday party... he had party on sat, actual b'day sun, so by mon, when his kindergarten lit some candles on their afternoon snack for him, they went to find him & he was fast asleep. bless!

I haven't been online much as we have been busy planning out new business venture... a nature centre for families where the kids can come and pond dip, and mums, dads, grandparents etc can have a cuppa & slice of cake. It's all based round an old farm here on a nature reserve... getting v excited about it It will open next summer.

LucyJones · 24/10/2004 09:44

wow - it sounds really exciting Tickle!

Tickle · 24/10/2004 09:48

And scary too lucy!

we're doing lots of planning right now... trying to second guess what kids will want to play with.

bit like that tom hanks film, where he is a kid but ends up running a toy factory - it's so easy to over-engineer things when they will play for hours with a puddle and a stick

dolbear · 24/10/2004 17:48

wow lucy how coo-el , v exciting
me and dh have been running new small business 4 3 mths now is groovy , but annoying also
we wnet to the baby show @ olympia yesterday was good , but packed , full of p-chairs and poor pg ladies - got loadsa free-bys and menu ideas though

dolbear · 24/10/2004 17:48

sorry , got confused again ! how exciting tickle , god I am soooo pants

Chuffed · 24/10/2004 19:17

dolbear we went yesterday too. It was awful trying to get around with the pushchair wasn't it. We picked up quite a few freebies although I'm afraid no samples of sudocream.
We walked home loaded down with so much stuff it was dreadful. At least it didn't rain on our way home I suppose it could have been worse.
Work tomorrow just the thought of leaving dd again gives me a headache.

dot1 · 24/10/2004 21:18

I've got one of my pre-booked annual leave days tomorrow! And am off Weds and Thurs aswell this week - it's half term and all ds1's activities/playgroup stops, so I'm taking as much time as possible so dp doesn't go bonkers with both of them on her own..! Got a bit fed up at work last week though - had booked a long weekend in November but interviews I can't get out of have been booked on one of the days, so it won't be as good... Never mind - 9 weeks until Christmas and I've got 12 days off!!!!

dp and I are completely addicted to the X factor - couldn't believe the result last night..!

LucyJones · 24/10/2004 21:25

Hiya! I'm also addicted to The X-factor. You're lucky your dp loves it as mine mutters about what crap it is before leaving the room! I think G4 are the best, but also couldn't believe the result. Thought Verity and the bloke who sang When A Man Loves A Woman were rubbish!

dot1 · 24/10/2004 21:29

can't stand G4!!!! dp likes 2 to go but I'm not keen - I just like Sharon Osbourne!!! Compulsive viewing - we even stayed up until 10.30pm to watch the Xtra factor on ITV2 (this is our latest night in ages...!)

LucyJones · 24/10/2004 21:31

But G4 can actually sing!! Not keen on 2 to go either. Voices of Soul were great, couldnt believe they were in bottom 2.
