When did your baby start sleeping through the night?

Google says about 6-9 months old, but as a mom-to-be I'd rather read real stories and experiences.

What I mean by sleeping through the night is, when was the first 8 hour sleep you were able to get?

Reason I'm asking is, that will mark the time I can resume my previous exercise regimen, as sleep is an important part of recovery Grin

Not every night but DS has slept from 7pm to 4am since he was 4 months- that is 9 hours but unless I went to bed early I wouldn’t get 8 hours myself. Since 6 months he has slept 11 hours at night with no night feed. No sleep training involved. I think we just got lucky and I’m sure he may change yet.

Dc1 14 months with night weaning
Dc2 8 weeks until 5.5 months most nights and then didn't again until 12 months

They're now 3.5 and 19 months and I still get woken by one or other at least once a week. Then there is the nights where they plan together to ensure I don't sleep at all

Thing is, sleep changes over time, but throw in getting 20 teeth through, sleep regressions, growth spurts, colds +other bugsnand developmental leaps, they are almost never in 'plain sailing land'- there is almost always something that is liable to throw a curve ball in. And it's not linear - it's possible to have a fabulous sleeper for a year, and then then not sleep through for another 2 years, or vice versa.

Sarafive · 04/08/2020 20:18

13/14 months after weaning.

PreggersMcPreggers · 04/08/2020 20:29

DD started around 9 months. But not religiously. She's now 1 and sleeps through every night, unless poorly.

Harrysmummy246 · 04/08/2020 21:14

DS is 3 yo and we get a couple of sleep throughs a week, but bedtime is less and less involved and we get maybe one wake up rather than every couple of hours unless he's ill or too hot (really affects him)

I started exercise again about 6mo PP really apart from walking dogs but it's only been since lockdown i've been 'training' rather than just trying to be healthy. And i still need quite a few 9PM bedtimes to manage that (and I still can't rise early to get stuff done like lots of mums apparently do)

DS1 first slept for an 8 hour stretch at 7 weeks. He didn't do it every night until 10 weeks, after which he's been a phenomenal sleeper, other than rare disturbed nights due to teething and illness.

DS2 was 9 weeks when he first slept an 8 hour stretch, he then did it every single night until he got to about 5-6 months, when he started teething and was up again. He's a good sleeper now at 17 months but I would say 6-12 months he was very inconsistent and didn't always sleep through.

happymummy12345 · 04/08/2020 21:54

3 months

Missmonkeypenny · 04/08/2020 21:59

DD from 2 weeks ( yes, really!)
DS is 7 months and has slept though once but usually does 7 - 7 with a wake at 11 and 3am

Tatum1234 · 04/08/2020 22:01

16m, 12m, 18m and 4m for my four.

Shelby30 · 04/08/2020 22:02

First baby 6 wks and she was consistent. Would sleep 12-14 hrs a night. Sometimes I had to wake her at 10am! She did still wake up sometimes but a Little Rock and she wld go back to sleep. Never knew when she was getting a tooth nothing seemed to bother her, angel baby lol.

Second baby, oh I wish she was as gd as my first 😕She started going through the night without feeding at about 3/4 months but at 8 months still goes through spells of waking a few times, always ends up in my bed to settle her. A few times a week I have to get up and feed her around 5am then bk to bed as she just will not stop whinging and no cuddles or anything else will put her bk to sleep. I know that she is still a gd baby compared to others!

BorderlineBob · 04/08/2020 22:07

Mine slept through (11pm - 9am) for the first few months then the 4 month regression hit and he never slept again 😂 He's 9 months now and sleeps in our bed (so we actually all get a good 8 hours every night). Many people are very against co-sleeping but it works for us and I love it

PrayingandHoping · 04/08/2020 22:08

10-7 from 4 months

7-7 from 7 months

Blingismything · 04/08/2020 22:10

Both of mine were 14 months and this coincided with them starting to walk more so were more tired.

Doublechins · 04/08/2020 22:27

1st 7 weeks
2nd 12 weeks
3rd 4 months

4th is 2 years old and still doesn't 🙄

JaniceBattersby · 04/08/2020 22:45

No 1: two years
No 2: 3 years
No 3: five years and still not there yet
No 4: 3 years and still feeding several times a FUCKING night

First: two by about 1 year but Both did it on and off then thrown by something ie teething.
Third is two and has not slept through a single night in his entire life. He is the happiest of my babies. But he gets the rage in the middle of the night. It’s like he saves all his anger up for two in the morning. He sleeps in my bed. I’ve given up.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 04/08/2020 22:56

Both of kind were about 5 months I think when they stopped waking for a feed.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 04/08/2020 22:57

Mine, not kind

Fatted · 04/08/2020 23:00

I was getting a decent chunk of unbroken sleep by 11 weeks and 9 weeks. I would say though if you want a good 8 hours, be prepared to go to bed when your baby does!

But you do get nights when it goes to shit with teething, when they're ill or for other random reasons. My eldest probably woke more than my youngest. I genuinely could count on one hand how many times I've been up in the night with him since he was six months old.

peachgreen · 04/08/2020 23:04

Hmm, she started doing 8 hours at about 3 months, but it was 7pm-3am. But she then went back over from 4am-7amish. She started doing 22 hours at about 5.5 months and now there's only a handful of nights she's woken between 7pm-8amish. We're very lucky!

BertieBotts · 04/08/2020 23:11

Just thought you may want to know, I've put in all the ages on this thread (converted to months) of children who already sleep through and these are the averages:

Mean: 14.87 months (1 year, about 3 months)
Median: 11.5 months
Mode (most common): 4 months

  • But the second most common is a draw between 2 months, 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, 18 months and 2 years (the last 3 might just be because people rounded up/down :))

And then the quartiles are 4m / 11.5m / 18m

Which is interesting - so half of babies (in this thread) start sleeping through somewhere between 4m and 1.5y.

I would like to calculate more but DS is predictably awake Wink

2155User · 04/08/2020 23:12

Randomly slept through for a few weeks around 5 months.
Then woke between every 2-4 hours from then until 18 months.
Still wakes on the odd occasion now at 2.

2155User · 04/08/2020 23:14

@peachgreen

Your child slept for 22 hours?!
