High chair recommendations!

Hi,

Looking for some advice!

I have a 4 month old baby and we're looking at buying his first high chair so he can sit with us at meal times in preparation for him starting to wean in a few months.

Does anyone have any recommendations of high chairs?

We have the stokke trip trapp one and its great and will last all the way through to adulthood (seriously!) but it is expensive. Everyone will tell you to just buy the ikea one. Its amazingly cheap and easy to keep clean. Easy to keep clean is absolutely key. Avoid any with fabric covers/fiddly bits as you'll be scrubbing food off it daily and wishing you'd just bought the ikea one.

Ikea or aldi. Plastic. Cheap. Easy to clean.
The ikea one even fits in the dishwasher (not that I've got a dishwasher)
You don't need an all singing all dancing highchair, keep it easy for yourself... Weaning is messy!!

Tripp trapp

I loathe the ikea one so beloved of Mumsnet. Baby Bjorn all the way (but go secondhand).

We have the Ikea one but I do wish we'd got the Tripp Trapp. Definitely no fabric inserts!

Tripp trap. We still use dts daily and they are 8. I use it wfh and they use them for homework.

I love our IKEA one because it's super easy to clean and the tray fits in the dishwasher.

Our ikea one has lasted us years. It's so easy to clean. We used an insert for DS1 but DS2 is seriously grubby so that went in the bin pretty quickly.

Quite often see Tripp Trapps on our local Facebook marketplace and they have a good resale value. Wish we'd got one but couldn't justify it after a £12 one from ikea did the job just as well.

That's great, thank you for your advice. The Tripp Trapp looks really good but it's £225 (inc the seat and tray) vs Ikea's £12 - hard call.

I am wary that this chair will last a long time and would be used for future children so just weighing up the options

Ikea all the way. It is perfect as it's really sturdy, you can get insert for when they are tiny and it's just so easy to keep clean.

There's really no need (in my opinion) for anything other than the ikea one. Yes others may have padded seats etc but my baby has never shown a preference or seemed to find the ikea one uncomfortable.

Easy to keep clean and no annoying nooks or crannies for food to get caught in!

Anything that is easy to clean, not one that's legs go halfway across the room and foldable are all good.
I never had a standard high chair I had the ones that strap to a chair and you can take with you. They were so easy to fold away, clean, take on holiday, also could remove the tray and push right up to the table (used as a booster seat).

We had exactly the same dilemma; in the end, we went for the IKEA one (and my parents also got one too which makes it easy when we're there). It's unexciting but absolutely does the job. I am incredibly glad it is so easy to clean too as DS managed to get 90% of it covered in porridge this morning. I was worried that tomato-based stains would really show up on the white but it must be magic because they don't at all.

We’ve got the Babylo hi lo from Smyths purely as it reclined because like you, I wanted baby at the table before he could sit properly

When they’re fully sat up, the Ikea is the best as it’s small and easy to clean

We have a Stokke steps and LOVE it! It looks stylish, It’s easy to clean and has a foot rest. Highly recommend!

For a basic highchair that’s easy to clean - IKEA. It’s a great chair for the price but will only last so long.

We went for a Tripp Trapp and haven’t regretted it. My son is 2.5 and uses it multiple times a day and he loves being able to climb up to the table independently. It got us out of a tricky situation when he Was younger and started to fight the high chair, we just took the baby set off and BAM, big boy chair! He loved it. I see us using it for many years and we’ll be buying another for DS2.

Tripp Trapps are widely available second hand, as are the extra bits like the baby sets, which could save you a lot of money.

Ikea. We bought the insert but the baby was too fat.
Now they are older we have second hand tripp trapps; they last much longer to be fair.

Ikea - so easy to clean and sturdy I've lent mine out to friends and so far it's served three babies in its lifetime and still going strong

Years ago I wasted over £300 on a fresco bloom high chair , it looked amazing but weighed a ton and was a nightmare to keep clean. IKEA high chairs are the best.

We picked one up in asda pretty much identical to the IKEA one. My LG loves being able to sit at the table with us and its just the right height x

We went with the ikea high chair. I just couldn't justify over 200 quid on the tripp trapp, it's lovely looking but at the end of the day does a highchair need to look nice? There is also no garuntee that your child will still use it as they get older so it seemed so much money to spend on the premise that it might last them.

In short we went for cheap and easy to clean and saved the rest of the money for a rainy day and future experiences that baby will hopefully remember more fondly than what highchair they had .

We bought the Ikea one for our youngest. He's 24 now and we couldn't really justify spending £££ at that stage. We had two all singing dancing highchairs (one with a swing and a fancy wooden job) for our older DC.

We kept the Ikea one in the attic and it came down again for our first DGC. The grandchildren came along in quick succession so we bought a second highchair. We have lent them out to other grandparents for visiting GC. They are sturdy and easy to clean.

You can spend your cash on a posh one, but you don't have too and the child won't care or remember.

Another vote for IKEA. DD was very sturdy and could sit propped up in it with the inflatable insert for long enough for us to eat a meal from about 3 months. She was a very cranky baby and until then we'd been eating one handed in the living room. She loved sitting at the table and it was a lovely step back to normality for us.

She's two now and uses both the IKEA and a booster depending on her mood.
