When did your period come back breastfeeding

I want to get pregnant but still want to breastfeed my 6 month old. I’ve always fed very often but did give one bottle a night. Now I’m trying to give more space between feeds and maybe more bottles . Also started weaning with food, however not sure this is enough to bring it back as still breastfeeding a lot at night. I wanted to know those with older kids, when did your period return and what brought it on?

It varies massively. For me it was 24 months... feeding at night seems to have quite a significant effect. The kellymom website has some interesting stuff about ways you might be able to persuade your body to get on board, including eating a lot of extra calories (!). Good luck.

After 9 weeks. I'm still EBF and my periods are still coming. It's incredibly annoying.

HavelockVetinari · 07/07/2019 18:46

10 months, but I'm much less fertile - I've had 3 rounds of IVF since DS (2) was born and got FAR fewer eggs than previous cycles. I've now stopped mostly, in preparation for cycle 4.

I also have a friend who bf her child till over 2, and was TTC since her DC1 was 12 months. She had no luck till weaning.

Conversely I do know women who've conceived whilst bf, one of whom went on to tandem feed.

3 months both times and I was ebf'ing. I got pregnant while bf'ing DD when she was 14 months old but unfortunately miscarried at 8 weeks.

Constance1234 · 07/07/2019 18:54

Five months for me and I was ebf at the time.

GrouchyKiwi · 07/07/2019 18:54

3 months all three times. The first time I combi-fed so I wasn't surprised. With DD2 I was EBF and she fed literally every hour for the first 3-4 months so I was really upset that my period came back so soon, especially because my Mum & sisters got a whole year or more.

With DD3 I was resigned to it appearing again at 3 months, despite EBF.

Heymummee · 07/07/2019 18:55

I was breastfeeding for 15 months but my period didn’t come back for another month after I stopped

FloatingthroughSpace · 07/07/2019 18:56

Dc1 9 months
Dc2 11 months
Dc3 12 months
Dc4 13 months

Very much impacted by night weaning as a pp said.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 07/07/2019 18:57

5 months and EBF day and night, not a single bottle. Grrrr!

Cheerfullygo4 · 07/07/2019 18:58

First period was 28days after giving birth all four times. All children EBF and BF for around 18 months. I was gutted!

UpToonGirl · 07/07/2019 19:03

With my first they came back at 9 months (he slept through 7-7 from about 3/4 months). Second was 10 months, I was still co-sleeping and he was feeding through the night. Third was 13 months, still feeding round the clock at the time!

From reading some replies I think I was really lucky!

UpToonGirl · 07/07/2019 19:04

Although my periods have been much heavier after each child - still regular as clock-work tho.

firstimemamma · 07/07/2019 19:05

6 or 7 months, no bottles at all and started weaning just over 5 months.

HerSymphonyAndSong · 07/07/2019 19:09

Six months. I was livid as I thought the only bonus of him feeding all night long was that periods would stay away Grin
I think in our case it was introduction of solids that might have triggered it. Or it could have been anything. Either way I was very cross

SardineJam · 07/07/2019 19:10

2 months, and I EBF too. I wasn't devastated because I wasn't even really over the birth yet!

Valkarie · 07/07/2019 19:10

Ds1 fed all day and night, but period returned at 4 months. Ds2 fed much less frequently and only once at night and periods didn't come back until 6 months.

YukoandHiro · 07/07/2019 19:23

13 months for me

HelenaJustina · 07/07/2019 19:28

About 9 months all 4 times. Despite the varying ages they slept through the night!

MrsNai · 07/07/2019 19:30

Just over 12 months for me and that first period was pretty painful but then they seemed back to normal levels.

DecomposingComposers · 07/07/2019 19:33

Mine was at 11 months but it varies so much.

Emelene · 07/07/2019 19:50

kellymom.com/ages/older-infant/fertility/

This link is interesting. My periods haven't returned yet and my baby is nearly 8 months.

MaryPopppins · 07/07/2019 19:52

Mine was around 7 months.

That was with 109% EBF but had started a little BLW but she wasnt really eating enough to drop any milk at that stage.

Sevo7 · 07/07/2019 19:58

4 months with dd after I finally got her to accept a dummy and stretch to 3 hours between feeds rather than sucking on me constantly for confort. Came as quite a shock though as I was expecting not to have periods a for ages!

Pineapplefish · 07/07/2019 20:00

For me the timing varied but it was always when I went down to two breastfeeds a day.

Chloe9 · 07/07/2019 20:59

As soon as the postnatal bleeding stopped more or less Sad
