My baby can read

I am new and this is my first post. I just want to know your opinion. My baby is recognising words by following what is written such as she claps when seeing a word. I assume this is ordinary. My DD is 13 months (she is my first), we speak to her in two languages and I use flash cards as she enjoys playing with them a lot. We do not use them everyday but she plays with them quite often. Is there anything else I can do to boost this ability.

Sounds very advanced my little guy is 21 weeks though... but hopefully he will be responsive to flash cards ... I confess I have his abc cards ready and they were for 3 years plus? Though will introduce sooner until he enjoys them x x

sure your baby can read! FFS stop this nonsense you will make your child very unhappy and neurotic.
Yes read to your child/look at books etc to instil a love of books and reading but stop with the flash card stuff

So she claps when she sees the words she knows written down, in the paper, at the supermarket? Or she claps when she sees the flashcards she likes playing with?

Read stories to your kid. Picture books will brightly coloured illustrations and imaginative, fun stories. That's what makes a difference.

Do you mean you show her a card that says 'clap' and she then does the action? Are you maybe demonstrating the action first? I'm sure she's a very clever baby (as they all are!) but don't out too much pressure on her, there's plenty time for developing a love of reading.

Oh dear! No, your baby cannot read. She is clapping because you're engaging with her. You could be holding a piece of toilet paper and she would react in the same way.

She loves books and we read plenty stories in both languages. Firstly she was showing the card as we were playing and waving when showing the card 'wave', clapping when picking up the card and as follows. She brought the card 'car' to the car she got from her grandparents. We keep the cards as part of the play time. Now, I show her a flash card and she recognise the words by following what is written.

Do the cards have pictures on them?

No pictures only words.

I absolutely don't believe it. But if you're sure, then try writing the words into pieces of card (and do not read them out loud) and see if she can do the same with those. Then you'll know if she is actually reading the words or just recognishing he colours/images/style of each card.

My baby can walk and she's only just 5 months, so nerr nerr

she can stand and take steps when you help her balance, otherwise she'd hit the deck hard and she can get herself up

Just let her be a baby. Forget bloody flash cards

My genius grandson knew my car, by the number plate, he also knew it was an Audi A6 because I told him. At 11 months old he used to say Nanny's car is an Audi A6. He's such a gifted and talented child, takes after me [hmmm]
He's much older now and a perfectly normal little boy.

Let her be a baby. Let her play and laugh and enjoy things. She doesn't need flash cards. Give her some duplo and let her create

to be honest id say its perfectly normal at that age to remember the look of a card for example to see how the letters look to the action.

Flash cards with words and no pictures sound a terrible idea for such a young baby!

We do other activities as well not only flash cards. We keep them as a playtime and not everyday. She really loves duplo and finder painting. She is my baby and we enjoy multiple playgrounds where she interacts with other children.

I’ve never seen a set of flash cards without pictures. Did you make your own?!

I was taught to read with recognising flash cards. Now they teach deciding words with phonics, because it was believed that with word recognition you would be bad at spelling. I can’t spell which could’ve a coincidence.

I bought them second hand on eBay.

My first baby girl was reading her first Ladybird book when she was 18 months. She started with flashcards which had a word and a picture, then started recognising the word without the picture. She is now a mature and sensible adult with 2 masters degrees in languages. It is entirely possible that your baby is recognising the words.

My eyes are rolling so far back in my head that I think i might lose them.

Stop pushing her. She's a baby, let her develop at her own pace.

FWIW, I could read pretty fluently at around 3 - I'm hyperlexic - it never did me any good though. Average A-levels, etc. My DD could read individual numbers & letters by 20 months (not all, about half the alphabet, & numbers to 10). No flashcards, too much bloody alphablocks. She didn't start to read until she was 5... my point is early development doesn't necessarily signify anything.
