My baby can read

I am new and this is my first post. I just want to know your opinion. My baby is recognising words by following what is written such as she claps when seeing a word. I assume this is ordinary. My DD is 13 months (she is my first), we speak to her in two languages and I use flash cards as she enjoys playing with them a lot. We do not use them everyday but she plays with them quite often. Is there anything else I can do to boost this ability.

I think that some young mothers in a similar situation would like to hear how my daughter develops. My daughter is 3.5 years old and at the moment she is in school nursery, where her talent for Mathematics has been recognized. I stoped using flashcards and started reading in my language and this decision was good as she started speaking my language fluently. Since she went to school, she begins to mix languages and replace already learned words in her mother's language with easier English words. We found out she was quite smart when she got the Leapfrog tablet for 20 months and quickly started using it and playing 3 years plus games. When she was 2.5 years old, we installed her Gruffalo with tic-tac-toe game and she started winning without our help. I know it sounds like I was making it up, but I am not. I started investing time in her social and physical development, especially after the first lockdown ended. We go to gymnastics, have fun and playdates with her friends. She is my rainbow baby so everything she did was amazing to me. As a baby, she amazed me and continues to amaze me. Regarding reading, she recognizes whole words as no one is teaching her to read. For example, recently she chose the Roman sticker book and labeled the gods by name, as they had names on the stickers and places where they should be stuck. She is unable to pronounce the names of gods:) so it is not reading in the full sense of the word. This was truly my first post and as a new mum I found it difficult reading some unpleasant comments.

@Mamatuska*,*@MamaTuska Is your daughter 13 months, or 3.5?

Fallagain · 23/10/2021 19:51

I’m surprised to hear she is not learning to read. Does she not go to school nursery? Are they not teaching her phonics and blending?

Interested in this thread?

I'd guess 3.5 as the original post is from 2019

YesIDoLoveCrisps · 23/10/2021 19:53

It’s an old thread she’s come back to so she can remind us how clever her daughter is.

Lightswitch123 · 23/10/2021 19:54

Pahhahahahahahahahaaaaaaaaa

OP you are too funny! Grin

Please screenshot your post OP and look back on it when you have more kids

No way!!! This is so cringe

OP! Please stop! I'm embarrassed for you

WestendVBroadway · 23/10/2021 19:56

@CiaoForDiNiaoSaur Thank you , I hadn't realised it was a zombie thread. Why the fook do these old threads appear as 'Trending now'.

MaverickDanger · 23/10/2021 19:58

The child is 3.5 @WestendVBroadway, it’s an updated thread that began in 2019.

I expect the child has her PhD by now!

Poorlymum0 · 23/10/2021 19:58

This just sounds like boasting, it really does. Pity your child when she's 8 and forced to play an instrument for 9 hours a day. Just let her be a child for God sake.

NorthSouthcatlady · 23/10/2021 20:00

You better not hold her back. How about finding out exam dates for her English GCSE?

Sparklfairy · 23/10/2021 20:05

People here can be so jealous horrible. I was reading very early, always miles ahead of my class in maths, and was even moved up a year. It happens.

You don't have to be spiteful just because your own child is distinctly average.

CtrlU · 23/10/2021 20:05

You shouldn’t have posted on here as your likely to receive nothing but belittling and negative comments that aren’t helpful.

Whilst I’m in agreement that your baby can’t read - she clearly can recognise words and that is a gift. I would say continue doing what your doing and keep raising a genius.

Obsidiansphere · 23/10/2021 20:06

So sad, this child will have too many expectations placed on them and end up unhappy and neurotic Sad

scully29 · 23/10/2021 20:07

ooo well now I want an update from OP on how dd is doing at 3.5?

Obsidiansphere · 23/10/2021 20:10

My dd was reading at 3 and she is ASD…she has hyperlexia, being advanced can be because of a condition.

@scully29 OP has updated as above!
Takemetothe90s · 23/10/2021 20:12

This is a bit silly. I tried to get my child to learn to read when she was about 3, I read to her constantly from babyhood. Nada.
When she went to school bam!!! She learnt SO fast, her reading came on enormously.
For the record, I could probably have come on here when she was 2 and said she could “read”
Hand her the hungry caterpillar, gruffalo etc at that age and she could “read” it.
She had just heard the stories enough times to memorise them.

Itsnotdeep · 23/10/2021 20:17

I don't know why everyone is being so horrible to her. You all sound jealous tbh. Some children are exceptionally bright as toddlers and stay so throughout. Some even out.

She sounds lovely OP

(My dc couldn't even write their names when they started school, let alone read anything...).

scully29 · 23/10/2021 20:19

Oh thanks Westeand! I didnt realise that post was OP and skipped it as far too long and difficult to read! Will try harder now! thanks!

HarryHarryHarry3 · 23/10/2021 20:22

My son at a very early age memorised his books so it looked very much like he was reading but of course he wasn’t. He’s 3.5 now and can recite The Gruffalo and many other books off by heart as he’s turning the pages. I think he just has a really good memory rather than being super smart!

stingofthebutterfly · 23/10/2021 20:24

Ah yes, what kid doesn't want to stick bits of Romans together?

I suppose it'd make a change from Peppa Pig and Cocofuckingmelon though.

HarryHarryHarry3 · 23/10/2021 20:25

(Having said that I finished the whole school’s reading scheme by the end of Year 1 and ended up being moved up a year so maybe he is really smart too!)
