Baby hates pram

Hi all,

My DS is 4 months and has never been a massive fan of the pram since birth. Now he is older he is way too nosey to be laying flat. So I thought I would try him in the car seat part of our travel system. Well. He cried HYSTERICALLY the whole time he was in there. Absolutely did not give up and got so stressed out. This hasn't been a one off either :( I love carrying him in a carrier don't get me wrong but I can't help but feel envious of these babies being pushed around in their prams!

Has anyone had experience of this? Have the babies ever grown out of it? I should say as well the seat faces me so he can see me but doesn't help.

Hi Rosebud,

Does your pram come with a toddler seat? We moved DS into his when 8 weeks old (too big for the bassinet) and really enjoys being able to see the world around him.

The car seat of your travel system should really only be used for short periods of time due to the shape they force the baby to be sat in, which may be why your LO is unhappy when in it?

My dd hated pram and car seat. Was slightly better when I had it facing outwards and again better when I changed it to the seat bit. She's very nosey so didn't want to look at me. From about 1 she started loving her stroller/buggy.

MrsPandaBear · 21/12/2018 16:02

DS screamed hysterically despite so I gave up in the end and stuck to the carrier. He started tolerating it from about 5 to 6 months, once he was old enough to sit bolt upright in it. Ironically, from about 9 months it was the only place I could get him to nap...

DD loathed the carrycot, but liked it a lot more once she was big enough to sit up in the buggy seat at 5/6 months.

Moominfan · 21/12/2018 16:05

Mine wasn't a fan until he was in the front facing toddler seat cause he's a nosey Parker

darceybussell · 21/12/2018 16:06

Mine is the same, he has been in the seat from being quite small because he hated the carrycot and he is just starting to get better - but I am also very envious of all the people pushing their babies round in prams and pushchairs!

Rosebud1302 · 21/12/2018 17:13

Ah interesting to see this is fairly common! Sorry I am a bit slow with this stuff - when people say the seat do you mean like an ordinary pushchair like you see older babies/toddlers in? Or is there something more suitable for smaller babies? If anyone has a picture they can show me I would be grateful so I can see what I need to look into!

Yeah mine hated the pram. Was slightly better in the pushchair attachment (went in that from about 4 months) but she walked everywhere from 15 months as it was more hassle than it was worth!

SoyDora · 21/12/2018 17:18

Yes, by seat people just mean the ordinary pushchair seat. Like this...

Right got you thanks. I took him to mothercare and sat him in one of those type of seats thinking he might prefer it aaaaaand he did exactly the same thing :/ again it was facing me though. He is particularly grouchy at the moment as he is going through his big developmental leap/sleep regression so perhaps that could be affecting things?!

Yep, we had this. Had to carry DD round in the carrier between about 11 and 16 weeks, because she screamed bloody murder in the pram - carrycot or seat (was the same in the car seat). Then I tried her again when she turned 4 months and she seemed to tolerate the pram, but only with a dummy in her mouth and for short journeys. Now 5 months and she’s no trouble in the pram - often falls asleep in it in fact.

Best of luck - maybe keep trying it every couple of weeks and eventually one day he’ll surprise you! Gets heavy carrying them everywhere!

Rosebud1302 · 21/12/2018 17:32

Yes doesn't it just! And I find he doesn't sleep too well in it either unless I put a coat round him. I will definitely try again in the new year as we will be out of this leap then! He has definitely been more fussy than normal the last few weeks so that probably doesn't help.

BB2018 · 21/12/2018 17:39

Oh, I also found it helped to only put her in the pram when she didn’t need a nap - she’d scream when she was tired because she wanted to be carried. So maybe when you try it again, make sure he’s had a nap and is nicely full of milk so as happy as possible! Smile

Rosebud1302 · 21/12/2018 17:56

That's great advice I will definitely do that!! Thanks :D

I had this problem but my DD is finally getting over it at 6 months. I think it's just a matter of time with some babies?

Rosebud1302 · 21/12/2018 19:28

I do hope so. Would love to be able to walk round with him in a pram. Don't ask me why haha I know it's daft but never been able to do it 😂

Ds was like this as a baby. I think around 6 months he definitely got happier generally. He also had a dummy which helped a bit when younger... Worth a try?

Rosebud1302 · 21/12/2018 20:50

He started rejecting dummies a while ago :( I can try again though I guess!

Ds1 Screamed blue murder in his buggy until he was 9 months old then suddenly tolerated it

Ds2 had same buggy and was an angel

Rosebud1302 · 21/12/2018 21:26

They are all so different aren't they!!

OP posts:
E20mom · 21/12/2018 21:34

Yes definitely normal. Mine got a lot better at 5 months which made outings so much easier.

Rosebud1302 · 21/12/2018 22:32

That's so great to hear a lot improve around 5 months. Here's hoping mine is the same!!!

icklekid · 22/12/2018 06:30

Yes DD liked it from birth. They are all so different. I remember pushing Ds whilst he screamed because I needed to get somewhere and being over worried about looks and comments. It's just something you presume you will be able to do. I used to try him in it with sling underneath incase it got too bad!

abcriskringle · 22/12/2018 06:38

Mine was the same until at 12 months we got a facing outwards, lightweight pram. He bloody loves it - he even naps in there and everything. I think he disliked all the padding and 'fuss'of the travel system whereas the new buggy looks more spacious for him. May also have been an age thing though, so hard to tell with babies!

thesunwillout · 22/12/2018 06:46

Sorry, I misread your title as baby hates perm.
Made me laugh anyway.

Merry Christmas x
