What time does your 5, 6 or 7 year old go to bed?

My dc seem to be pushing back their bed time to 9pm. They really should be sleeping 8 and 8:30pm the latest. They wake 7 or 7:30pm usually. I am curious what time other children around the same age go to bed and wake up. My younger one who is 5, should def sleep by 8pm the latest...but his almost 7 year old sister causes him to stay up later.

My 5 year old goes to bed at 7 and up at 7-7.30am! She’d be beyond exhausted if she regularly went to bed after 7.30pm.

SoyDora · 12/12/2018 21:24

Can your 7 year old read quietly in bed for an hour before she goes go sleep?

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 12/12/2018 21:24

Blimey. Even my 12 year old goes to bed at 8.30pm.

My just turned 7 year old goes to bed at 7pm. She generally wakes up at 7am! She gets very tired and ratty if she goes to bed after 7.30.

ChanklyBore · 12/12/2018 21:26

Usually around 8pm.

Up at the crack of bloody dawn (usually around 6am in winter.....earlier in summer).

Orangepear · 12/12/2018 21:26

Nearly 6yo, asleep by 6.30 pm, up at 7/7.30am.

Oatomatom · 12/12/2018 21:26

My 7yo has lights off at 7.30 on school nights, 8.00 at weekends. I try and get her in bed about 20 minutes before that, so she can read quietly for a bit.

StrumpersPlunkett · 12/12/2018 21:26

Blimey my 12 year old has a shower at 8 and turns off electronics.
He has his light switched off at 9.

C0untDucku1a · 12/12/2018 21:31

My 6 year old thinks sleep is for the weak. He is watching apprentice atm.

ILoveMyMonkey · 12/12/2018 21:31

Ds just turned 6 goes up between 6:30 and 6:45 for shower, story and lights out by 7. Up at 7:30.

Overrunwithlego · 12/12/2018 21:39

Are they tierd and grumpy? If not, then they are probably getting enough sleep. It’s frustrating when it eats into “your” evening though. My 7 year old dd goes to bed 8-8:30 on a school night and is awake by 7am. 11 year old ds is just getting later and later - rarely asleep before 10pm but again, is awake by 7. They are both up a bit later at weekends and might sleep a little later in the morning. I’m surprised at those with 12 year olds asleep by 9pm - my 11 year old is at scouts until 9pm.

MarmaladeIsMyJam · 12/12/2018 21:44

I think it totally depends on the child.

My nearly 7 year old has just finished reading at 9pm and has gone straight to sleep. she will be up between 7.30-8am. 9pm sounds late but sleep council/NHS recommend 11 hours sleep which she is getting.

Some kids are up super early though so need the extra sleep.

Pashazade · 12/12/2018 21:48

7 yr old. Upstairs at 7pm, lights out by 7.30 usually asleep soon after. Awake at 0612 on the nail every morning! Still wakes up early even if a later bedtime. Is usually zonked by 8pm if we are running late for whatever reason.

Mumshappy · 12/12/2018 21:51

My eight year old is never in bed before nine on a school night. Gets up at half 7. On a weekend she will stay up later but wont get up till nine or so.

Youngandfree · 12/12/2018 21:57

5.5 yr old here in bed for 7 / half 7 latest

musicalmama · 12/12/2018 22:00

My nearly 4yo is asleep by 8.15pm most nights and up at 6/6.30pm! Has never slept 12 hours in his life. 😴

Muddlingalongalone · 12/12/2018 22:05

My 4 & 7 year olds go to bed at around 8:30. Ideally it would be 8 and that's what we aim for at the weekend. Dd1 is up at 6:15 & dd2 I have to wake every morning without fail.
Issue is we don't get home til 6 & have foid/chill out time/FaceTime with dad/bath/homework & reading.
Ahhh not enough hours in the day

elQuintoConyo · 12/12/2018 22:11

7Yo lights off by 9.30/9.40. He's up at 8/8.15. We live next door to the school so no rush.
He never sleeps longer than 11 hours.

Polly1977 · 12/12/2018 22:12

All kids are different. My 6 yr old and 9 yr old both go up to bed at 8.15 and have “quiet time” til 9, then they both go straight to sleep. They wake about 7.50am and get ready for school in about 15 mins!! My youngest has always been a night owl. She prefers a late bedtime and lie in - if she had her way she’d go to bed at 11 and get up at 10!!! Nothing I’ve tried, including getting her up earlier, has ever changed this, so I just accept it and feel smug that although I don’t have much child free evening I never have to get up early!! Swings and roundabouts! X

shalll · 12/12/2018 22:13

Definitely depends on the child. My DC are the same age as yours, and are in bed for around 8pm. But 7 year old DD will listen to an audio book until about 8.30pm.

They wake up at 7am.

ImAChaiseLongueGetMeOutOfHere · 12/12/2018 22:17

Mine is five in a few weeks.

Bed between 7-730, one story then fast asleep. Awake 7am.

thismeansnothing · 12/12/2018 22:25

My 6 year old is in bed for 7:30 and is up at 6:30/7 mon-fri aNd whenever she wakes at the weekend.

We've a right case of end of term itis ATM so if I can get her in bed earlier I can, even if it's just fifteen mins.

SurfnTerfFantasticmissfoxy · 12/12/2018 22:50

7 year old has bath at 7.00pm and stories then lights out at 7.30pm on school nights. Might get pushed an hour at the weekend or on holiday.

Heartofglass12345 · 12/12/2018 22:51

My son is 5 and a half and he is still awake up there now even though he went to bed at 7 Hmm

DrCoconut · 12/12/2018 22:57

Does anyone else find it's hard work dragging their kids out of bed on dark mornings? Mine just want to sleep in and it's horrible forcing them out to school and nursery. It gets so much easier once the mornings are lighter again.
