Would you let your ds sing Another Brick in the Wall at the school talent show?

You know the one ...

We don't need no education.
We don't need no thought control.
No dark sarcasm in the classroom.
Hey! Teacher, leave those kids alone.

I think the school will take it with good humour, but maybe I'm naive. What do you think?

He's 7 btw with a passion for rock music.

Oh don't get me wrong, I loved S&G as much when I was 7 as I do now.

I'm not proving my music cred through my kids, merely influencing what they like by listening to what I like when they are around (i.e. captive , but isn't that what happens in families, that's why I will love S&g, Neil Diamond, The monkees, sandy shaw and probably a zillion other things that lots of people think are pants.

Not Boyzone though! They suck.

iirc teachers did another grick.... when i left school

I know I'm not qualified yet, but have to say it would make me pmsl if a seven year old did this. In a hugely good way

Spider · 19/06/2007 12:36

I'm stung at the implication of 'proving music cred through kids'.
Pinkl Floyd could hardly be considered to be 'credible. More classic I would have thought. Also it's not my taste but I'm very happy he has found something which really talks to him and it's something of good quality.

I wasn't really looking so much for judgements as to what this might say about ds's personality or my perceived pretensions.

Rather I was wondering whether it might be offensive or incongruous at school. Most seem to think not but there's a significant percentage who disagree so I'll run it by the school first.

Thanks all.

easywriter · 19/06/2007 12:42

Get him to announce that he's going to sing 'Anarchy in the UK' and then when he comes out with 'Brick in the wall' you'll feel the wave of teacher relief as it rushes past you!

DS1 (6) had a thingy recently where the kids in his class stood up and sung a song. most chose nursery rhymes and similar.

DS attempted the full version of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.

Couldn't be more proud!!!

Presumably his teachers will be familiar, if only in passing, with your child's personality and musical taste. Children that age don't tend to play that sort of thing all that close to the vest!

Given that, I think it would be great for him to sing it. It isn't necessarily about the content for me - there's nothing overtly coarse or profane in that song, it's just a bit subversive - it's about letting your child express himself and feel safe in doing so. And like you said, he's been into this kind of music for years. It isn't as if you're spoon feeding it to him and then shoving him out on the stage.

Honestly, I don't see that the teachers will do anything but clap and laugh, unless you're from a dreadfully stuffy and staid school from somewhere in the 1950s.

If I had a son, I'd be pleased to think he was making his own choices - and that those choices weren't hurting himself or anyone else.

Blimey, this little guy will be 17/18 by now!

faithinthesound · 21/04/2017 02:04

Why the HELL did this show up on my active list!?!? D: That will learn me to read the dates!!!!

BlueChairs · 21/04/2017 02:11

@Ladymuck I'm 21 and have a very clear knowledge of the song and I'm the last person to ask about any kind of music!

ShiningArmour · 21/04/2017 02:19

Wtf!!

PhilODox · 21/04/2017 02:21

Well, blue, you were only 11 when the thread was written...
I thought for one moment spider and Enid were back.

SeekingSugar · 21/04/2017 02:25

Totes! That's the joy of these things, the kids singing inappropriate stuff. Otherwise it would just be too terrible to sit through.
