Would you let your ds sing Another Brick in the Wall at the school talent show?

You know the one ...

We don't need no education.
We don't need no thought control.
No dark sarcasm in the classroom.
Hey! Teacher, leave those kids alone.

I think the school will take it with good humour, but maybe I'm naive. What do you think?

He's 7 btw with a passion for rock music.

Talking it over with the teacher is probably reasonable

easywriter · 19/06/2007 11:54

Why no Tutter?

Peachy · 19/06/2007 11:54

Yes I would let him, we used to sing it in music class.

DS1 has been given pack up your troubles... for his infants leavers concert- am majorly as it talks about 'while you've a lucifer to light your fag, smile boys thats the style' and we have spent 7 years teaching smoking ISN'T t be smiled about but there's no point arguing, am Boiling Bigger Bunnies atm

I wouldn't like it. I think he is too young to sing that sort of song (and I know it well). Apart from anything else, isn't it a) a bit cynical in a 7 year old and b) might some other parents not like it?

Whatever happened to 7 year olds singing children's songs?

easywriter · 19/06/2007 11:58

We sang loads of songs of the time when we were at junior school. Some of which I now think 'wow, good on you for letting us sing that' i.e. if up for debate on a thread i think we'd have been v. divided.

It's only a song, maybe it'll lead to discussion. Maybe it'll stop kids liking shit like ... ...boyzone and like some vaguely decent music.
(Waits for verbal kicking from boyzone fan club)

nickytwotimes · 19/06/2007 11:59

i don't see what is wrong with a 7 yr old singing it. it's only a song to them

Tutter · 19/06/2007 12:00

just seems a bit teen angst-y for a 7yo imho

wondering why does he want to sing it? is it genuinely just because he likes it, or does he want to be a bit rebellious do you think?

DumbledoresGirl · 19/06/2007 12:00

I dont think anyone is going to get into a debate about the merits of rock over pop when Spider's boy sings Another Brick in the Wall. The song will just be listened to and I personally would think it sounded odd coming from the lips of a (presumably) sweet 7 year old.

Peachy · 19/06/2007 12:00

A friends son is singing girlfriend in a coma apparently, he sand it at the school pop idol thing and they were mightily impressed.

Seriously bizarre choice imo

nickytwotimes · 19/06/2007 12:01

girlfriend in a coma!?!

BrothelSprouts · 19/06/2007 12:01

Let him sing it.
It will go down a storm, I'm sure.

TippiHedren · 19/06/2007 12:01

Yes, it would be brilliant!!LOL!!

Peachy · 19/06/2007 12:01

quite nickytworimes

I even pulled it up on youtube to check I had the right song (the smiths)

I did

nickytwotimes · 19/06/2007 12:02

now, i DO think girlfriend in a coma is taking it a bit far...
pmsl, though.

easywriter · 19/06/2007 12:03

The Smiths and Moz, rock!

My daughters have been singing along to such fabulous ditties as 'You have killed me' and @some girls are bigger than others' since they were 2.

Frankly, I'm a v. happy mummy!

Peachy · 19/06/2007 12:04

Yeah mine like all that stuff and I am pleased about it, we're not exactly- erm- westlife fans LOL, but school concert????? At the most religious school I ever came across????

easywriter · 19/06/2007 12:09

This no longer sounds as if it's about what's best for spiderboy.

See, he's the one who's singing it and he'll incurr the wrath of his teachers if they hate it.

Thing is, it's a great song. I think at worst the teachers will view it as a deliberate junior school thing to do to annoy them (like taking shandy on school trips) and rise above it.
All Spider says she/he believes it'll be taken in good humour by the school.

Let him sing.

Enid · 19/06/2007 12:09

agree with tutter

btw we are muso family and dd1, 2 and 3 (7, 4 and 1) love the whtie stripes etc etc

but would encourage dd1 to sing a simon and garfunkel or more trad kids song rather than 'Seven nation army' at school

easywriter · 19/06/2007 12:10

Can I be his manager for the day?

Spider · 19/06/2007 12:10

My ds loves rock and he loves the rebelliousness therein. It's something he really identifies with. He's a very advanced 7 year old alothough he has a couple of friends who share his passion.

He loves the angry, punkiness and I honestly don't think that's unusual for an urban 7 year old.

Girlfriend in a Coma eh Peachy? Wow! However I think there's a well developed and healthy sense of subversion at this age in many a bright lad. It's about letting them express all their feelings and not just the ones we find palatable.

My only worry was whether it would piss off the teachers. I doubt it as they're great, but I will run it by them.

Who knows, next week he might decide to do Sandy instead.

Enid · 19/06/2007 12:11

well you've already made your decision

easywriter · 19/06/2007 12:11

Kids would struggle to sing & nation army.

But Simon and Garfunkel? Dahling that's SO passe.

Enid · 19/06/2007 12:12

I dont need to prove my muso cred through my kids though

and I loved simon and g when I was 7

NoodleStroodle · 19/06/2007 12:13

Hate S & G
So....wimpy

DumbledoresGirl · 19/06/2007 12:18

Love S&G, even more so after seeing them live in Rome 3 years ago (yes I am showing off!)

Also love heavy rock.

Also agree I don't need to justify my musical credentials through my children.

Feel a bit slighted that my kids are not "urban" hip and rebellious. But then again, I glad they are not.

Dd, also 7 and leaving infants, would probably sing something from Joseph if she was doing a talent contest. There again, she is tone deaf so I would dissuade her from singing even Any Dream Will Do!

Good luck Spider's Boy.
