KristinaM - my baby is also not doing all the clever things that the early april babies are doing. sitting and having hair aside. She has rolled three times only (like Tickle's the bulky cotton nappies probably hinder her, she only rolls when naked and outside).

And dd3 is a counter-example to the solids = better sleeping, dd3 does 11 hours without waking at night on just breast milk. I tried solids 2 weeks ago cos she was feeding so often in the day and waking earlier and I was knackered, but since then she's feeding less and waking later anyway, without taking solids.

Lowryn - I am clingy to dd3 too as she's my last (absolutely definitely ), I find it harder to leave her than I did with the other two. she's getting exclusively bf for longer too.

hewlettsdaughter · 08/09/2004 08:59

So Fennel - do you think dd3 was having growth spurt a couple of weeks ago?

Fennel · 08/09/2004 09:03

HD, yes a 4 week growth spurt! but the last 2 weeks (she's nearly 20 weeks now I think, born 22 april) she has fed a bit less and slept a bit longer at night.
am very relieved as it was too much feeding, it might sound good that the feeding is all in the daytime (obviously it's good) but it's still a lot of bf to be doing and still tiring.

Fennel - do you have express whilst you are at work for your dd??

Over the last week, I've given up expressing. I was so crap at it anyway and loathed having to do it. ds now has 1 bottle of formula just before we go to bed. Oddly enough I've been feeling really guilty about that. I know it's bizarre.

Metrobaby · 08/09/2004 10:03

Hd - I'm cnvinced my ds was having a growht spurt around 17 weeks. Also he just seemed really fussy when feeding. I was beginning to have doubts about my bf capabilities but perserved for a few days and now he seems fine.

Fennel · 08/09/2004 10:09

metrobaby, HD and I are discussing this this morning on another thread
when to wean - hope that link works!

I express 3 times in an 8 hour day, so feed baby at 7 (or 6.30) and 8am, express a bottle of 4-5oz at about 11, 1, 3, and then feed the baby at about 5, and 7pm.
baby takes 3x4-5oz bottles at about the times I'm expressing.

you shouldn't feel guilty about formula. I would use it if found expressing harder. I feel guilty about dd3 going to nursery younger than the others and for more days. that's partly why I am bf without formula for longer - compensation!

hewlettsdaughter · 08/09/2004 10:12

Fennel, I was just going to add a link to that thread . Thanks for your comments on it .

Fennel · 08/09/2004 10:16

ps while the supply and expressing is going fine I am still wondering if it's really worth it. I do really notice the tiredness from fully bf, and feel guilty that my other dds are missing out on having an energetic all-singing all-dancing mother while I feed the baby endlessly.

Oh, it's easy to feel guilty sometimes isn't it? Here I am feeling guilty about doing too much bf now....

(when in fact I should be feeling guilty about not getting on with my job...)

MrsDoolittle · 08/09/2004 10:32

I'm like you Metrobaby, I couldn't express very well either - I usually gave up after 10 minutes, I got so bored. I really hated doing it which quite honestly came as a surprise. I have big boobs and raspberry nipples, breast feeding came easily but I really don't like expressing! I wonder of it's a psychological thing?
I think my baby is an early April baby Fennel (April 10) but she is pretty immobile, dd sounds like LucyJones' baby. DD just rolls when she is out of nappies and she can lift her head up when I put her on her tummy. I thought it might have something to do with the fact dh and I are pretty laid back kind of people, he says we like to "follow the path of least resistance".
Oh, and the latest thing.... Dd keeps pushing her bottom lip out and sticking her tongue out. She has no idea why dh and I keep laughing at her, she just grins anyway
LucyJones - I teach student nurses.

dot1 · 08/09/2004 10:51

ooh - dp has just phoned to say ds rolled over onto his front a few minutes ago!!! Can't believe I missed it though...

MrsDoolittle · 08/09/2004 10:58

I'm sure he'll do it again for you when you get home (smile)
Back in July when I was ill, my sister told me that dd had been laughing out loud at her fiancee, which I believe because she loves him holding her. At the time I was disappointed because we couldn't make her do it again. I have only heard her giggling out loud in recent weeks, doesn't happen very often but when she does its infectious

dot1 · 08/09/2004 11:04

I know - isn't it lovely when they really have a good laugh! ds2 is a very giggly laughy baby - has got a proper belly laugh! Really different from ds1, who smiled but didn't really laugh and is still a relatively serious little boy - will laugh at times, but sparingly..! Makes me really believe that personality's pretty much set from birth...

LucyJones · 08/09/2004 19:55

Hi everyone. Well I survived the 1st day at work. Dh looked after ds except for his one hour at nusery for settling in. They said he was very easy as he just played with everything and smiled away and drank all his bottle. Then when dh took this angel baby out to the car he threw up all over his shirt He also took him to baby clinic - 17lb now and on the 98th centile for height (hv said he'd grown lengthwise amazing amounts!)

hewlettsdaughter · 08/09/2004 20:04

That's great news re your ds, Lucy. Hope work was ok (did you go shopping in your lunch hour?)

LucyJones · 08/09/2004 20:06

Hi HD - I was so exhausted by 1st day back nerves that I only managed to get to Boots for a sandwich! Will try harder shopping-wise on Friday

Fennel · 08/09/2004 20:09

Lucyjones, glad to hear it went ok. yes, what did you buy on the shopping trip? you have inspired me, I am planning to go shopping tomorrow when dd3 is at nursery! though I still don't want to buy any clothes til I'm a size smaller but that could be a while yet.

I love that rusty cackle of a baby trying to learn to laugh

Fennel · 08/09/2004 20:09

posts crossed. hope it was a good sandwich!

Hi Ladies - Fennel has just found me loitering about in the nappy section - again!!

Fennel · 08/09/2004 20:21

Yorkiegirl, I am bugging Dp to download photos I took yesterday. will send them shortly if they are nice. have lovely ones of all 3 dds but I am in them looking fairly gross so will have to photoshop them and paste myself out so you can all (except Dot) still imagine me as svelte and trendy

mrs d - do make sure you don't talk about nappies when back at work. people will think you weird. believe me, I know....

MrsDoolittle · 08/09/2004 20:22

Been there, done that and got the postcard!! Not at work though, but just as bad!!

Fennel · 08/09/2004 20:34

Things not to talk about when returning to work:

  1. nappies
  2. washable nappies
  3. expressing milk
  4. leaky boobs
  5. leaky anything else

in my workplace baby talk is fine but nothing too gooey.

MrsDoolittle · 08/09/2004 20:42

I am trying not to Fennel. As a result everyone gets monosyllabic answers to the following questions;
1 How big is she?
2 How old is she?
3 How are you finding it?
4 Are you back now? (When I would like to say "No I am just here for fun!")
5 Who's looking after her now?
6 When they see her picture - "Oooh are you using reusable nappies?"

Fennel · 08/09/2004 20:44

Mrs D - well I get "You're not going to have another are you?"

Fennel · 08/09/2004 20:46

Or "for god's sake woman, have you no self control?" when announcing 3rd pregnancy.

or "keep your legs crossed from now on!"
