PhD confusion

I've just finished my PhD but I'm having a family dispute about what to call myself.
I started under my maiden name and got married halfway through. I changed everything, passport, bank etc to my new name except at uni where I kept my maiden name because I already had publications in that name.
So I'm Dr maiden name but am I Dr married name too? DH says not and that I am Mrs married name even though he gets to use Dr on everything by virtue of never having been daft enough to change names.
Any clever mumsnetters out there with PhD's know the answer?

I used to know a Very Reverend- great title

Grrrr · 16/05/2007 13:59

Did you say David Cameron has a mind of his own ? Good heavens! That's news to me.

I'll pop over and see, because I've debated inappropriate/gratuitous use of PhD title of "Dr" far too long this morning.

Surely one of the reasons there are so many of us on here at the moment is that many of the ones actually in universities are avoiding marking?

Interested in this thread?

Then you might like threads about these subjects:

gess · 16/05/2007 14:01

diplidocus your post made mer lol. I'm great at avoidance.... I loathed my PhD Libra- still finished! Actually why am I applying to do another one?

Kathyis6incheshigh · 16/05/2007 14:01

LOL Grrr.

I did imply that, yes - not concentrating!

Diplidophus · 16/05/2007 14:02

I dread to think how many times I uninstalled and reinstalled minesweeper. Now I would be blocking and unblocking mumsnet!

Kathyis6incheshigh · 16/05/2007 14:02

Pure one-upmanship Gess - that's the only possible reason

Ellbell · 16/05/2007 14:02

"It comes down to applying discretion with regards the appropriateness of the circumstances and situation at the end of the day."

But that's the thing... I don't want to be thinking about which title to use in each and every given situation. I use 'Dr' in all circumstances, just as before I used 'Ms' in all circumstances. Should I have two bank accounts, one with 'Dr' on into which my (meagre) academic pay is paid, and one with 'Ms' for use at Tesco's?

fennel · 16/05/2007 14:03

lol @ diplidophus.

Gess, it's a bit complicated to explain briefly, and this was quite a while ago now, but the phd started as an attempt to understand, from a psychology and linguistics perspective, why Machine Translation was so hard, and mutated along the (painful and unenjoyable) way to being a Conversation Analysis of the way people interact and communicate around language and how this affects their understanding.

But I did quite a bit of CA after this looking at other subjects, especially about feminism and CA.

nothing about autism though.

Blackduck · 16/05/2007 14:03

Dip LOL - yeap I used to play tetrus endlessly....... and also thought about writing a book (dp says ALL arts graduates go through that one...)

Grrrr · 16/05/2007 14:03

With regards the "doing anything else but the PhD work one should be getting on with".....

If I rememebr correcly, houses shared by students are never as clean and tidy as during exam season when the need for "displacement activity" instead of revision is at its greatest.

Libra · 16/05/2007 14:04

Gess: are you sure you didn't enjoy it just a tiny, tiny bit? I admit loathing the writing up, but the research was fun and a reason to lock myself away from the students.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 16/05/2007 14:04

Ah yes, uninstalling Minesweeper.... and having to have a strict 'no housework from 9-5' rule because otherwise you would be cleaning through choice.

gess · 16/05/2007 14:05

Ah feminism and CA- I went on a course run by the great CK, so have quite a bit about that ready to read (and sexuality of course). Found it very interesting.

gess · 16/05/2007 14:07

Maybe Libra..... just a little....

thehairybabysmum · 16/05/2007 14:07

i quite like the 'Very Reverend Hairy babys mum'...has a nice ring to it! Ive seen one of those drop down lists too and was quite tempted by Princess HBM, although i definitely wouldnt carry that off if i dont even look like a Dr!!!

If it was the convention to gain the title MK after climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and you did manage to achieve this feat would you then not call yourself 'MK Grrr'

beckybrastraps · 16/05/2007 14:08

I didn't enjoy my PhD either. But, like Gess, I'm thinking of doing another one...

lionheart · 16/05/2007 14:08

I have done the marking so I am allowed on here.

Libra · 16/05/2007 14:08

Gess, good!

(Must go and mark another dissertation now and stop avoidance tactics.)

Libra · 16/05/2007 14:09

Lionheart, stop showing off!

lionheart · 16/05/2007 14:09

Two Phds?

beckybrastraps · 16/05/2007 14:12

In a different area

lionheart · 16/05/2007 14:12

Mention of the RAE is all it takes to stop me, Libra.

lionheart · 16/05/2007 14:13

I'd quite like to take another degree, so I can see the attraction, becky.

fennel · 16/05/2007 14:14

Gess you might have come across some of my friends and co-authors then.

Do you have a DOS in the psychology department who does CA?
