How many cloth nappies should I get?

Hi - have decided to go for bamboozles for our baby - due in a month. Size one goes up to 18lbs, size 2 starts at 10lb. Question is how many size ones shall I buy and how many size 2s will I need when it's bigger? I know they take a while to dry and we don't have a tumble dryer - so need to factor that in.

well, ime size ones don't really go up to 18lb. I would buy maybe 6 size ones, plus 12 size 2s - you can use the size 2s from about 6 weeks and I used to use size 2s at night, 1s in the day. you also need 3-4 size 1 wraps (you won't need the size 2 wraps till later).

also I have a couple of flat nappies for emergencies. not as good as tbs but can be handy.

buy white or whitish baby clothes so you can wash with the nappies!

Most people tend to use somewhere between 15-24 nappies plus 4 wraps per size. A newborn will need to be changed 10-12 times per day, reducing to 6-8 times when older

actually do you know how big the baby is? for a slightly bigger than average baby you can use the size 2s from maybe 3 weeks so I wouldn't bother with size ones at all. they are worth buying for a small baby though.

24 nappies??? where do these people keep them all?

I changed all 3 babies 6-8 times a day for first few weeks, reducing to 3-5 times a day at 3 months. 14 is enough (including my flat ones)

I used square terries so don't know about those specifically but we used disposables to start with until the cord stump came off. Sounds like it would be worth waiting to see how big the baby is then you might be able to get away with not buying size 1.

Advice I was given early on on MN is 15 nappies and 5 wraps. But I have to say that I gradually bought different sorts of nappies to see what I liked best and did have some disposables as back-up to start with.

Thanks everyone. I might be being induced at 38 weeks so think unlikely to go straight into size 2s. Maybe I should start off with disposables till can fit them. A friend said start with cloth so it's the only thing you know. Hmmm, not sure. Or maybe I should start with a different nappy that has one size fits all and then top up with bamboozles later. If baby needed changing 12 times a day i'd need 24 and to be washing them every day...

really, nk, 12 times a day is not usual.

but I used disps for the first two weeks too. I don't think you need to start on terries straight away.

40cm X 40cm terries are inexpensive and very versatile and would do quite a few months I would think. Thenappylady.co.uk gives folding instructions. I use the Jo fold.

I love the bamboozles but prefer bambineos... just

I use day only and have 12 nappies

I'd buy size 2's and fold the top over, use wrap to secure
Or use muslins for the first few wks

true re 40x40 terries or muslins. and you can use them alter on as bibs too.

Piffle - what do you like better about the bambineos?

Bambineos are better as the have a removable booster wich means the nappy drys slightly quiker than the bamboozle with it's fold out booster, it also means you can fold it an place it exactly where you need the extra absorbacy. The Bambineos tend to fit over a wider size range as the fabric is more stretchy and the tabs are longer. They are slightly cheaper which will save you money if you are buying 10 plus nappies. The customer service is far suerior and there is not the long wait for them as there can be with Tots Bots. Also they still do the nippa version which is better for a birth to potty size 2 nappy, but they are also available in popper and aplix fastenings!........and no I don't work for Bambineo

i have some terries you can have if you like ffp.there sat here doing not a lot!they are used so depends on how you are about second hand?
we go through about 5 a day,try to wash every 2/3 days so we have about 15(not counting the ones i dont need but have to have!).

Agree with snuggle - bambineos all the way here.

I tend to recommend having 16-20 nappies which allows you to wash every 2-3 days.

Size 2 nippa bambineos from birth are fine - much less bulky than the size 2 bamboozles

I don't know where I'd be without Mumsnet - thank you all - bambenios it is. Any advice on best place to get them welcome - Little Rainbow only site I've found and they're out of stock. Kittypants thanks so much for terry-offer. sounds like I'll be ok tho if I go for Bams. Weirdly I was recently sorting out my mums loft (before pg) - she died a while ago - anyway she'd kept the terries she used for me. Stupidly I chucked them out... little did I know... feel a bit sad now!

Back to bams - thinking maybe I should get half nippas and half poppas - if nippas best from birth but perhaps poppas a bit easier when older?

Oh, and what do you keep them in till you wash them? And if I'm in hospital for a week (a possibility) d'you reckon they'd be on for real nappies or should I buy disposables for then?

For bumfluff coming up with searches - saw myself mentioned on a site the other day by someone I don't know - suddenly felt like it was all a real site now rather than an MN nappy store (not that I don't like being an MN nappy store!!!)

I have 20 and it's fine after about six weeks when my DD stopped using over ten in a day. FYI in terms of storage, such things are household efficiency and cleanliness really go out the window when you have a baby so don't worry about it. Mine live in a basket next to the changing mat though.

NK, forgot to say you will need a nappy bucket to store them (could usr a wet tote babg but it probably wont hold large quantities) in prior to washing, no need to soak them just store them in a dry bucket. If you are in hospital a week it may be a nightmare using washables, especially bamboo ones as they take a while to dry so you DP will have to take a bag home with him, get them washed and dried in time for bringing them back to you the next day. I used one pack of disps on DD as I had an emergency cs and was in hosp (only for 2 days but we had enough running about to do with another child at home). Now with DS2 I had a homebirth and used cloth nappies from birth, but that's a much easier way to do it !

I should imagine it's all down to personal preference (and possibly to do with the fact that I'm not the most dextrous of people) but I have to say that I far prefer the aplix (velcro) fastening nappies that I have to the poppers. They just seem a bit more adjustable.

Now that I've got used to them I think nippas are probably the best fastening for the nappies I'm using (Bambineos) but it's been a bit of an uphill struggle to get dh to use the reusables and he draws the line at another "bit to faff about with". Arse.
