We spent last Sunday with some 'first baby' couples. I know we've all been there. But, really......

This was at my MIL's with Mr Bubble's cousins and their babies.

One had a NASA style baby monitor and both couples arrived with travel cots with cat-covers.

One asked Mr Bubble where the cat was and he said that it had seen sense and scarpered. A 'cat-hunt' then ensued, even though this particular baby was in an autoclaved, temperature-controlled, cat-netted travel cot.

Mr Bubble buggered off to play with the big Bubble boys, leaving me to listen to puke-making cooing and discussions about Baby Mozart.

Puke.

Was I ever that bad?

Answer.

Probably.

There were raised eyebrows, too, about my lack of sun-hat for DS3 (2 years old, and don't we know it.)

I explained that he will not keep a hat on, but it fell on deaf ears.

I layered the sun cream on, though, so that they could smell my worthiness.

Ah, PFB, DS1 has a proper baby album with all his pictures and bits and pieces (the card from his cot in hospital and clip that was on his cord etc).

DS2's photos are mostly lying at the bottom of a box somewhere, I don't even know where.

I bought a Mr Whippy ice cream whilst pregnant and ate it with relish. I then read that such ice creams are to be avoided by pregnant women and felt very guilty and went on and on about it.

Things have relaxed somewhat since then. The other day one of our dogs puked up a worm on the living room floor and it transpired that it hadn't been wormed for over a year. Very embarrassing as dh is a vet and sells a wide variety of worming pills and potions at work

A (normally sane, natch) friend from my antenatal group told me she got under the babygym with her DS...and I, afflicted with a similar madness, felt guilt that I wasn't doing the same.

Ah, those days when DD1 could be bunged under a babygym for hours...

sun hats? its a well known fact that sun hats dont stay on unless stapled or glued to childs head.

I have 20 minutes of video of PFB lying under her baby gym at 6 weeks old. I manage a commentary up for the whole time too

It's odd, but with ds I was incredibly PFB-ish, quite literally bonkers, about some things, and extremely laid back about others. Into the first category fell food, strangers touching him and yes, photos. The second category included well-turned-out-ness - I was never bothered about going out with a couple of posset/food stains on his clothes - and slapdash nappy changing. Wouldn't have dreamed of a monitor or blackout curtains, or routines.

SoH, you don't sound the type to be befallen by PFB syndrome... (and have sensibly been MNing throughout your pg )

I was quite shocked when I saw my cousins children running around in the garden without sunhats.......complete with suntans!!!!! back when I only had one child

dd3 is looking a bit bronzed these days

I also was obsessed with her routine and would only go out if convenient with her routine. Thankfully I was way more laid back with ds!

When DD1 got crotchety, eg waiting for food, we used to bellow "Jerusalem" at her (we didn't know anything more soothing )

And the thing is....You can't say a thing....

One of these cousins was ranting at her DH as he'd forgotten the changing bag. O....M...G....

I offered her a two sizes too big nappy and some non-organic wipes and she was struggling to say 'no' politely.

SoH - the calpol thing, I used to mind a wee boy, and one day I said to his mum (he was about 9 months old) "I think he's teething, can you send some teething gel/calpol/whatever you use and I'll get you to sign a form.
"Oh no, little X isn't having drugs of any description, teething can't be that bad and we don't want to clog up his body with uneccesary drugs".
Hmm, thinks I , mother of the child who had 2 or 3 or 4 teeth come through all at the same time, and therefore was very familiar with a bottle of calpol, and nurofen, wait and see.
Sure enough, a week later she came in with calpol, saying "we haven't had a proper sleep for nights, his teething pains are so bad, and the docotr told us we were cruel for letting him suffer

LOL love this thread. Have to put my hands up to the routine, routine, routine thing with PFB and lying awake at night waiting to hear him stir on the monitor even though he was only in the next room.
