My husband drew on my baby!

I need some perspective from someone who isn’t me- I’ve just gone to change my 5 week old daughter and my husband has drawn in black sharpie marker pen on her stomach (he has drawn a big sun around her belly button). I am incredibly upset with him. I can’t believe he would draw on our child honestly I’m dumbfounded. It looks hideous. And how am I now supposed to take her to clinic to get weighed? It looks terrible. When I have challenged him (woke him up- it’s 3am and I was changing her before her feed) he just said ‘why is there a pen there’ and ‘I was just a bit drunk don’t overreact’.
I didn’t know he was drunk or I wouldn’t have let him anywhere near our child for a start, but seriously, am I overreacting? I think it’s the most irresponsible thing I’ve ever seen I actually feel sick.

But what damage can this actually do to the baby?

It's weird and random but I don't see any real harm.

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 03/10/2017 10:06

Well, lots of things might not cause real harm, but it doesn't mean you'd want anyone doing them to a baby.

Ttbb · 03/10/2017 10:09

I wouldn't have woken him up. I would have found the sharpie and exacted my revenge...on his face! But yeah, YANBU.

Nancy it is possible that it could cause some reactions to the chemicals that are absorbed by the body and into the blood.
We don't know the risks.
It's not exactly an LTB situation but I'm concerned by his assessment that it's jokes to draw on a tiny baby.

PsychoPumpkin · 03/10/2017 10:15

If it was a toddler & not a permanent pen & he wasn’t drunk I would probably have rolled my eyes and laughed. My son thinks it’s funny to draw on himself.

As it was a tiny baby who was sharpied by a drunk person it really isn’t funny.

Draw thick black sharpie eyebrows on him when he’s sleeping. See how he likes it.

Nancy91 · 03/10/2017 10:16

You can only absorb the chemicals via ingestion though so that's not a problem, I just think that he has a weird sense of humour when he's had a drink, not that he is cruel.

ThatsWotSheSaid · 03/10/2017 10:26

nancy91 yes drawing on your skin means the chemicals are absorbed into your blood! This is 100% fact. The very dangerous chemicals that used to be in pens have mainly been removed but we are not aware of possible long term risks on very young children.

QueenJane · 03/10/2017 10:42

I can assure you that doctors do not/should not use sharpies on skin. This is a seperate issue however, because -

he got pissed and drew on his tiny baby. Lots of people worryingly completely missing the point.

Nancy91 · 03/10/2017 11:05

I looked it up and it's only ingestion into the bloodstream that could be a risk. The article states that it needs to be eaten or drawn on to broken skin which I'm assuming didn't happen. I think there has been a lot of overreaction on this thread.

ThatsWotSheSaid · 03/10/2017 11:24

I looked it up and it's only ingestion into the bloodstream that could be a risk. The article states that it needs to be eaten or drawn on to broken skin to be poisoned yes.
But drawing on your skin means the same chemicals get absorbed into your blood, all be it to a lesser extent. Which, potentially, could be harmful to such a young child.

ShiftyMcGifty · 03/10/2017 12:06

"I looked it up"

Educated guessing about what amount could enter and educated guesses about possible side effects. Since oddly enough we don't really experiment and draw on 5 week olds, despite it being a "no big thing."

Desmondo2016 · 03/10/2017 13:57

Your husband is a twat. On it's own you won't split up over this but I predict in about 4 years time you will have a much longer lost of twatty things he does and you'll see the light . What a wanker.

SocMcDuffin · 03/10/2017 14:05

My toddler went on a sharpie rampage.

It came off wood effect surfaces such as laminate quite well, but didn't come off the walls, white gloss furniture, or porous stuff such as the bedlinen and my fabric shoes.

But the solvent I used was acetone nail polish remover. That's what I had to use to fade or get rid of a sharpie. It's bloody persistent. Water or wipes didn't cut it.

I think I'd be very annoyed, and I'd definitely get his mother to put on her HV voice and give him what-for. For the sharpie and for getting pissed in secret.

For what it's worth, with the washable, safe crayola markers, we had fun with the baby when he was about 9 months old with moustaches and comedy eyebrows.

SocMcDuffin · 03/10/2017 14:06

Sorry - should say - Do NOT use acetone on the baby!

existentialmoment · 03/10/2017 14:45

If you took your 5 week old child to a doctor and he drew on your baby with a sharpie for shits and giggles, you'd be ok with that? Because that's your analogy

No, that's not my analogy. You and others wanked on about the possible death threat from a fucking pen, which doctors use to draw on people in hospital.
It's a fucking pen lads, get a hold of yourselves. It was a stupid thing to do but you need some perspective, because you all sound like hysterical nutballs.

thatcoldfeeling · 03/10/2017 16:11

"lads" Hmm

And anyway you, existentialmoment and others prattling on 'its a pen', are so missing the point it is unreal. He thought his 5 week old baby's body could be a used for his own amusement when she has no say, is incapable of having a say, and depends upon her parents for care. It is a total wankerish thing to do and shows a complete lack of respect for her.

existentialmoment · 03/10/2017 16:19

Blah blah blah blah.

It's a man with a drink on him doing something silly. No-one died, or was injured or was hurt in anyway.
Get over yourself.

pictish · 03/10/2017 16:38

I agree re: hysterical nutballs. This thread is an absolute melodrama.

Perspective - try some.

Shock

You drew on your baby with a non-toxic pen for comedic effect?! What sort of twisted monster are you?! I bet you sometimes have a drink as well, you irresponsible wanker. You've got no respect for your baby, no respect for your partner and no respect for yourself you utter sicko. I am off to call 101 to have this logged. You sicko.

I nominate this thread for classics btw.

bengalcat · 03/10/2017 17:07

It would piss me off . I'd draw something on him and paint his toenails .

Slartybartfast · 03/10/2017 17:13

what a total eejit.

Pictish, I drink ALLLL the time. DP does too. Sometimes we even imbibe to the point where we are over the limit with a child fast asleep upstairs! Sometimes we even have sex when the child is in a 15 mile radius.

So perhaps you need to call SS too?

It was hilarious. He had groucho eyebrows, a handlebar moustache, and a pointy smig.
