Which child has bigger bedroom?

I'd always known girls to have the bigger bedroom, regardless of whether they were first or not.

Our first is a boy and he's currently in the smaller room and the other is used as a study / spare room / laundry room.

Wondering whether to move him in there and make the smaller room the study etc...but if our next is a girl I'd always assumed she'd have the bigger room and so maybe we shouldn't move him.

Husband said first born should have the bigger room and now I'm questioning why I've always had this idea girls should have the bigger room.

What do you guys do??

Ds has the biggest room and is the youngest. You are keeping your ds in a smaller bedroom just in case your next child (that you haven't even had) is a girl? That's madness.

Oldest would get the biggest bedroom. I don't think it's really fair to say girls/boys get bigger bedrooms. In fact, a little bit sexist. Why do you think girls need bigger bedrooms?

I would say oldest has the biggest room.

We have it in age order with eldest getting biggest, although 2 of the bedrooms are exactly the same size. When DC1 went to Uni, everyone else got "upgraded" and DC1 got the smallest room.

Dd has the biggest room but is also the oldest child

The one with the most toys has the biggest room- so that was dd when it was just her and her big brother who is 3 years older. But now third and fourth children (3 years apart) are girl and boy respectively and boy (youngest) has larger room Ashe has most toys.
So there isn't a rule as such.

Whoever needs it - toys, study space, floor space for sleepovers, model train enthusiast, whatever.

Ours have bedrooms of exactly the same size - one of things I loved about home when we bought it last year.

In our house younger DD has the biggest room as she has the most toys. 12 year old DS who only has his tv, Xbox and a few other bits has the smaller room. His stuff would look lost in a big room and it makes sense to do it that way.

Agree with the bigger toys thing
DC1 had the big room until the age of 9yo. Now her toys are smaller and easier to store, and playing with them takes up less room, so it seems sensible that she now has the smaller room.

Oldest gets biggest room in our house.

Oldest has the biggest room at the moment. Younger child was still in our room when we moved in. I imagine it will swap around in a few years and maybe the eldest will get the smaller room with a high sleeper bed with a desk underneath.

Oldest DS has the biggest room (2 boys) partly because it is coldest and he doesn't feel the cold, but also with the caveat that he gives his room up for the occasional guest.

DS1&2 have the bigger room because they share. DD (the oldest) has a smaller room but has it all to herself.

Growing up the eldest had the biggest room until youngest was struggling with space so parents moved into smallest room (just enough space for a double bed and a wardrobe) and youngest then got that room which was on a par with the room of the other child.

Never, ever heard of it being about gender.

Depends on who needs it. Extrovert, loud and bouncy DC2 with similarly loud friends gets the biggest room ATM because it's furthest away from the rest of us (all introverts).

When the DC were little the youngest got the biggest room as they were home more and usually had bigger toys.

DH and I have the smallest bedroom as we don't spend much time in it.

Oldest gets the bigger room in our family, never heard the boy/ girl thing. You haven't had the other child yet so im not sure why your worrying about this yet OP

I have 3 dc. Middle child has the biggest room here, eldest has middle sized room, and youngest has smallest, for a variety of reasons.

Partly:

Dd1 has the room she has because of the view (out over garden/fields) as she likes to sit and look out of window. Plus she needs more space than ds (youngest) to play board games (dd1 is 12, but has learning difficulties, so still has pre-schooler/young child toys and games), and ds can and does come into her room to join in these games so his lack of space not an issue.

Dd2 has the biggest room as she is the one who has sleepovers (not going to happen for dd1, ds too young), plus she also then has space for music practice (she plays several instruments, including cello!).

Which leaves ds in the small room. He has more than enough space (even though the smallest it's still a small double). All toys (apart from a selection of games for dd1) are in the playroom anyway, rather than in bedrooms, so he is not without space for all his stuff.

Oldest got the biggest room because he was there first! The third room is tiny, and when we moved into the house DS1 was an only so it would have been silly to stick him there. DS2 has the box room now.

When I was growing up DB (older) got the biggest room, I got the smallest. Then we go a lift conversion en suite and I got it!

Oldest gets the biggest is just as arbitrary and unfair as girl gets the biggest!

When we moved, each one picked their own room (luckily everyone wanted a different room!).

Why would a girl need a bigger bedroom? For all their clothes, make up and pink glitter? While boys are always down the park playing footy, and aren't into clothes?

Actually very interested to know what the reasoning is...

I don't understand why a girl would need a bigger room? I would say oldest unless there's a massive gap and one is of the stage of TV and game consoles whereas the other is at the stage of mountains of plastic. But older kids need room to study and socialise with some privacy, so bigger might be better if the rest of the house isn't large enough to provide this.
