What time is bed time?

We have always put kids to bed at 7pm. My 8 (nearly 9) year old has just told me that no one he knows goes to bed that early.

Happy to review it (although we do like our adult only evenings).

Interested to know what others do...

DS is 9 and goes to bed at 8, although he is allowed to read until 8.30.

PickAChew · 02/03/2017 22:29

Mine have never gone to bed that early. 10yo was going to bed at 8, and was trying to go earlier until something upset his routine, recently, then he didn't go until after 9. He rarely sleeps more than 8 hours, so that has been marvellous!

Chocolateorangegoblin · 02/03/2017 22:30

My three year old goes to bed at 8/8.30, any earlier and he's up at 5!

RhinestoneCowgirl · 02/03/2017 22:31

Preparations for bed start at usually start by 7pm (there's quite a lot of faffing by both DC) aiming to be in bed by 8pm. Sometimes it ends up a bit later, tonight was 8:30. 10 and 8 yr old.

Sometimes I encourage 8 yr old in to bed earlier as she gets ratty.

ThreesMyMagicNumber · 02/03/2017 22:37

Our 6 yo goes to bed at the same time as the eldest, so it is the prospect of having them both up later that has stopped us from pushing it back...think we will need to change it though...

So no evening groups or classes then? For example, I was in cubs and then Scouts. Cubs finished at 7.30pm. Scouts, which started at age 10 1/2 was 9.30pm.

I was allowed to read in my room for a good while so at that age was probably well past 9pm before lights out.

Also, you are going to need to start staggering it if there are age differences. Treating eldest child same as the youngest one isnt fair.

HaveAWeeNap · 02/03/2017 22:45

Nearly four year old: up to bed at 7pm to 7.15pm ish with a view to being asleep before 8pm.
Gets up between 6.30am and 7am following morning so about right for the 11-13 hours sleep required for 4 to 7 year olds.

SleepingBooty · 02/03/2017 22:48

My 9yr old goes to bed 8-8.30 allowed to read for 15mins. She often stays up til 10 on a weekend.

PickAChew · 03/03/2017 00:05

Older kids will appreciate alone with mum time.

MumsGoneToIceland · 03/03/2017 04:49

Our dc (9 and 6) have always gone to be at 7 since birth. I changed it to 7.30 about 6 months ago and in last few weeks have told eldest that she can read in her bed till 8. On Brownie night, she doesn't get home till 7.45 so that night she is a bit later to bed (next year if she goes to guides it's a 9 pm finish!). Fri night and Sat can be up to 8.30 depending on how good a day it has been I.e how tired they are

It's a difficult balance. Eldest dd is starting to indicate her friends go later but she is getting hard to wake in the mornings indicating she needs more sleep. Plus as you say it eats into our adult time 😊

kineticmagnetic · 03/03/2017 05:13

DD (6) starts getting ready for bed around 6.45 with bath, book and no more talking by 7.45-usually asleep for 8.

TinyPawz · 03/03/2017 05:36

My 10yo is in bed each night for 7.30, any later and she is like a demon in the mornings. This was only put to 7.30 from 7 after much cajoling and coaxing.

mummydoc123 · 03/03/2017 05:47

My nearly 8 yr old goes to bed at 8pm and has done for past few years. Gets up between 6 and 7am. At weekend stays up till 9/9:30.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 03/03/2017 06:02

6 yo goes to bed at 7.30, reads for a little bit, asleep by 8pm wakes up at 6.30am.

cece · 03/03/2017 06:08

My 7 year old - soon to be 8 - who is in Year 3 goes to bed at 8pm. I am thinking about changing it to a bit later so yes I think 7pm is very early!

jamont0ast · 03/03/2017 06:10

My three year old goes to bed at 7. I think that is much too early for a 9 year old. I would have thought about 8:30 would be more reasonable.

I think once my DD is. 4 and at school Nursery it might go to about 7:30, but she might be worn out and stick to 7.

I think age 5 and in full time school 7:30-8:00. Again depending on tiredness.

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 03/03/2017 06:15

My 4 year old and 2 year old go to bed at 8.

Penhacked · 03/03/2017 06:38

8pm for the one year old (sleeps to 6:30am) and 8:30pm for 5 yo

bookworm14 · 03/03/2017 06:40

My 18 month old goes to bed at 7.30.

savagehk · 03/03/2017 06:41

4yo bedtime usually between 8.30 and 9.30. he's always been late to bed though even as a baby. I suspect once he's at school this might move earlier. He also still often has a nap though, on days without a nap it's usually a bit earlier.

TheMasterNotMargarita · 03/03/2017 06:44

9 1/2 yrs old.
Training nights 2x a week 8pm bed lights off.
Other nights bedtime is between 7-7.30pm she can read til 8pm.
Weekends 8.30/9pm.
Wakes 6.30-7ish.

dippywhentired · 03/03/2017 06:47

I have 3 kids of 9, almost 7 and 2. They are all in bed at 7pm, but the eldest reads until 7.45, middle one until 7.30. They are up at 7am. Works for us, they need their sleep and we get our eveningsWink
