Tripped over with DS

Feeling absolutely awful: went on a walk with 4 week old DS in the sling. About 5 min from home and managed to trip up twice! Ankle just went both times.

DS was fine - didn't even notice but I felt so bad. DH was very angry with me and swore. He's banned me from using the sling again.

Anyone else done this? Feel so clumsy.

It happened to me twice with DD1 in the sling (it was snowing both times.)

Don't give up on the sling! (If you like if) Get some shoes with a decent tread and maybe get your eyesight checked?

Your DH needs to calm down. Why wasn’t he carrying his DS anyway? Surely you have carried him for 9 months and are only 4 weeks pp. You tripped. People do and having a baby in a sling in front of you makes it more difficult to see where you are going. Your DH really needs to get a grip.

That's horrible of your DH to swear at you? I'm sorry you're feeling bad.

My baby hates slings (annoying) but I'm sure it's not unusual to stumble whilst carrying a baby in a sling. I'm always going over on my ankles since being pregnant- I think pregnancy (and breastfeeding) hormones make your ligaments more stretchy.

It's very scary when you have what feels like a near miss when you have a small baby. I don't think your husband should be making you feel worse about it.

I think your DH shouldn't have been angry btw (unless you were drunk or something? I'm sure you weren't) It was an accident. I bet you were the only one hurt and your baby was fine.

I fell on top of DD(4) today! We were rock climbing, and I went to jump of a low rock. My foot got stuck and I went headfirst, and squashed her flat! She was absolutely fine! Children are more robust than we think. Babies especially! Like you say he didn't even notice. Bit much to ban you from using the sling!

aww I've done this kind of thing. is he your first? if so this is pretty normal, don't worry, especially since you protected him and he wasn't injured (though i bet you were). With DS1 we were putting him into the sling for the first time, same age, DH had the sling on, I'd done up all the straps, adjusted it, made it fit just right. DS all bundled up for first walk. Except, I'd forgotten to clip the bottom bit up so I put him in and he shot straight through! Luckily DH was standing over the bed so he bounced onto the bed but it was still a fair way as DH is over 6ft. With DS2, also at 4 weeks funnily enough, I was coming down the stairs holding him in socks and slipped on the carpet and fell all the way down, old.iron radiator at bottom of the stairs. I instinctively balled up and he was fine. I cut my head on the radiator and fractured my coxyx.

I think this is some kind of initiation test that all new parents have to go through! The most important thing I learnt was don't sweat the narrow escapes. Your baby was fine, you'll protect him to the best of your abilities at all times, don't stress over the accidents along the way.

Jeez, you could trip over simply carrying DC! What an overreaction from you OH. As a teenager I was carrying my first born nephew down the stairs and fell from pretty much half way up, my reaction was to throw one hand out (stopping us hitting the wall at the bottom! And cradle him mercilessly with the other...we were both fine, it can't be helped! Please don't feel bad x

If you compare carrying a baby in a sling to carrying in arms (which is what happens to me when I try to take the pushchair but baby cries too much than it's quite similar. But in a sling you would be able to put your hands out to save you without dropping baby! So it's unfortunate you tripped twice but shouldn't put you off slings per say, especially if baby likes them!

I'd be more concerned that your DH was angry with you then you tripped over.

My baby fell off the bed at a young age. An accident. My DH wasn't angry with me.

It was instinct to protect your baby and you did. Loads of people wear slings everyday. You will be fine!

Tell him to quite grumbling - these things can happen to anyone - and it may be his turn next!

My OH was once carrying our 10 month old in a back pack while we were walking in the Black Mountains - he tripped and she sailed elegantly over his head in a great arc and landed in a bog - splat! Unhurt in spite of her flying episode! They bounce!

I should probably clarify it was more of a stumble. I don't think lack of sleep in helping.

Thanks for giving me perspective. DH has always been quite hard on me for mistakes...one of those 'I know best' people. That's probably a bigger issue than me tripping.

Grannyben - I think that's the thing. He's made mistakes but I've bitten my lip as in my understanding we are first time parents and this is bound to happen...he reacted as though I did it on purpose

Your DH reaction seems really strange, his initial gut reaction should have been to check you were ok. It must have really given you a fright.
You didn't 'make a mistake' you tripped up. If he saw someone else trip up in the street would he feel cross at them for making a mistake?! When your DS starts walking and falling over, is he going to be very angry at him and tell him off. Honestly, it's not normal behaviour from your DH.

Little - I did actually say to him he can't ever speak to DS like that. It's not the first time - it's definitely made me think

Don't beat yourself up. I slipped and fell forward with my 5 month old in the sling. I braced with my arms and knees so she didn't impact even slightly but I felt horrendously guilty.

Most importantly, my husband was worried about whether I was ok (after checking baby was unhurt). He told me I was a great mum for stopping her getting hurt. If he'd been angry and sworn at me for an accident I'd be thinking very hard about what type of person he was.

I broke my toe when I was heavily pregnant with one dd whilst carrying toddler other dd down the stairs in the middle of the night.
It was horrid I felt myself slip and couldn't fall on my bump or on the sleepy toddler so stuck out my foot..
Bloody hurt.
Happens to most people at some point ?

If your DS doesn't deserve to be spoken to like that then you don't either
I hope you manage to work things out.

Don't let the trip put you off using the sling, it can just take a little bit of practice getting used to.

Another one who has fallen over with DD in a sling and I know a few people who have. I've also fallen over carrying DD, dropped her off my knee and she's fallen off our bed.

Your DH's reaction is not normal OP, even if it was out of concern for your DS.

I am guessing you were apologetic to ypur dh? Dont be. It was an accident and to treat it in another way is just nasty. I would recommend you start standing up for yourself. My partner is an arse and actually responds much better when I dont take any crap.

Your 'D'H needs to get a grip. Anyway I've never had any problems with the sling but did manage to get the wheels of the pram briefly stuck under the lip of a train as I was getting off, fucking terrifying, had visions that the train would pull off dragging the pram underneath it with DD still inside. (Obviously I got it un stuck) Does that mean I should never go out with the pram again? I also tripped once pushing a pram downhill, only just managed to stop the bugger rolling away from me. Accidents happen. Tell your husband to wind his neck in and start talking to you with a bit of respect, if he can't quite manage tenderness.
