Hi there,

Any other mums over 40 out there? I am 42 and my ds is 8 months old. Would dearly love to hear others experiences.

I'm 41 & ds is 3... dont feel old (except when people start talking about the 70's 80's).. had a great pregnancy, but no more thanks!..(Once was horrorfied when talking to nice girl, about my age, in the park when toddler called her Nana!)

fizzbuzz · 27/01/2007 09:32

This how old I feel!

Teach 6th form D&T A level. Have to teach them about new materials and processes. Mentioned fibre optics as a recent develeopment, in the 60's and 70's. Blank expressions all round, then the comment "that was ages ago, before we were born...how can you call that recent?" Felt very old, plenty of other examples like that..

DH's friend once said he used to rush home from school to watch neighbours...I was breast feeding DS then. DH is 29!

I'm 45 so just offering empathy for being far older than we all feel!
Had mine when I was 32 & 34 so no right to join the thread, really

NotAnOtter · 27/01/2007 14:48

aww sue warms the cockles to hear you say that!

fortyplus · 27/01/2007 14:53

EEK!! Who are you then?

NotAnOtter · 27/01/2007 14:54

Are you SUE?

fortyplus · 27/01/2007 14:55

Might be...

RustyBear · 27/01/2007 14:59

omg nappyaddict - you're the same age as DS! (b. Dec 87!)
I'm 50, but my 2 are 19 & almost 17, so I wasn't a very old mum when I had them.

Mog · 27/01/2007 15:03

Is it that unusual to be an older mum nowadays though? Certainly at primary school gates almost all mums are over 30 and many more nearer 40 or more. In fact at our school it would be a younger mum who looked 'different'. Maybe it depends on the area you are in.

fortyplus · 27/01/2007 15:05

NotAnOtter - just looked at your profile and don't recognise your children, so maybe I'm not who you think I am?

JanH · 27/01/2007 15:09

I was 42 (well, 5 days short of) when DS2 was born; I will start collecting my pension 5 days after his 18th birthday

My older children were born when I was 31, 34 and 37. I definitely became more patient and tolerant with advancing age (still not very, by most standards, but better than before!)

Still having under-18s around at this age (I'm nearly 56 now) is brilliant for keeping you in touch with the world - stops you viewing teenagers with automatic contempt or terror, lets you know who that hideous face on the front page of all the tabloids this week belongs to, essential stuff like that.

JanH · 27/01/2007 15:10

40+, I think NAO was addressing suejonez when she said

aww sue warms the cockles to hear you say that!

you have your wires crossed

fortyplus · 27/01/2007 15:12

That's nothing new then must be my age...

JanH · 27/01/2007 15:14

Now I shall address you as Sue whenever I see you here

fortyplus · 27/01/2007 15:23

You may

JanH · 27/01/2007 15:30

Thank you, Sue

fortyplus · 27/01/2007 15:32

So are you really Jan or is that a made up name?

twoisenoughmum · 27/01/2007 15:42

Follydog - I would be happy to be interviewed for your over-40 birth stories book, if you like.

Had DD at 38 and then made it my mission to have 2nd baby before I turned 41 and made it with exactly a fortnight to spare. I am now 44.

I am sure I am the oldest mum in my DD's class at school. There is one mum who is 6 weeks younger than me, but she also has older children. I'm absolutely certain I'll be the oldest mum in my DS's class when he finally gets to school. I'll be closer to 50 than 40 when he starts in reception!

suzycreamcheese · 27/01/2007 15:57

is it a made up name janh? is your surname Tor?

am over forty, ds when i was 37..what do you want to research / need to know?

suzycreamcheese · 27/01/2007 15:58

oh, just read things, dont qualify sorry!

Freckle · 27/01/2007 16:04

I had DS1 at 37 (and 2 days!) - he's my Valentine's baby, bless. DS2 came along when I was 38 and DS3 put in an appearance several months after my 41st birthday. I hit the big 5 0 next month, but I honestly don't feel it. If I didn't colour my hair, I suspect its true colour would testify that I am in fact that old though.

follydog · 27/01/2007 16:11

Hi Everyone,

Thank you so much for your positive response to the idea of collecting stories. I am not sure how to get the questionaire to you all, but will look into it and hopefully come up with a solution.

Are you allowed to give out your e-mail address on these threads?

i have dd age 9 and ds 4.5mths

JanH · 27/01/2007 17:58

follydog, if you click on the envelope on the RH side of the blue bar on top of each post, you can send a message to the poster (have to subscribe £5 to mumsnet first, then send as many as you like)

(Or you could set up eg a hotmail account specially and post that address on here for people to email you, then you won't get spam in your proper mailbox)
