Where's Cod when you need her?! Potty training started today, and I really don't think I can be arsed. I need a kick up the arse!

DS1 (2.1) has been asking for the potty for weeks, and has started to take his nappy off for wees and poos etc. I put him off for as long as poss, but 2 incidents this week of shit smearing on walls (Tuesday and yeasterday) have propmted me to get him potty trained.

So far he's done 3 wees on the potty since about 2.30pm and about 4 or so on the carpet. I don't really have a clue what to do.

any tips?

As I can remember the central tenets of cod's bootcamp are:
choose Big Boy Pants with favoured character
practise pulling up and down
no nappies or pullups except for night & naps
take to potty every 15min, don't ask them
sit for 5min - read book if necessary
if nothing, no comment, get off
if successful, big cheers, clapping, whooping
if accidents, no fuss or cross, just 'where do we wee? in the potty!'
if whooping not working, add star chart or sweets
if Potty Fear develops, try trainer seat on loo

... and I think that's the main points covered

good luck!

Apologies for the overuse of "arse" in the title.

no nappies even if going out
(avoid long journeys for first few days)
pampers care mats in buggy and car seat
take lots of clean pants and trousers

I need help too, started potty training almost 3 yr old daughter on Tues, she knows when she wants to go but hates sitting on potty or toilet training seat. she's holding it in too long, scared shes going to get an infection. She's done a couple of wees on potty but with me holding her on while shes screaming, not ideal I know. it's getting us both ratty. Hav even resorted to bribery, my little ponies are lined up ready to give hen she finally cracks it! She's back to nursey tomorrow, have no idea how shes going to get on. Help!!

IntergalacticWalrus · 07/01/2007 20:37

As we have all said,.......... Cod had so much to offer MN, shame the more gobby on MN have ruined this.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 07/01/2007 20:42

Indeed LGJ, indeed.

newhousewife33 · 07/01/2007 21:14

I agree about boot camp, was just saying tonight I wish there was somewhere I could send DD for a week and she'd come back toilet trained. There's a gap in the market I think. Could make it like the intense driving lessons courses out there.

Tortington · 07/01/2007 21:26

i just let my kids go nekkid from waist down.

no need to pull up or pull down anything.

nappy for going out and at night.

pots of piss on carpet - but hey!

PanicPants · 07/01/2007 21:41

Whats the ideal age for potty training?

And don't just tell me 'when they're ready'! Is there an 'age'?

And if not, how do we know they're ready?

Tortington · 07/01/2007 21:43

mine were around 2yrs 8 months to 3.5 years.

i think mummies get overly anal about how early thier little darlings did it ( like walking )

but for the most part we can walk and talk and pee the same as adults!

colditz · 07/01/2007 21:52

I am going to leave ds1 in nappies until he goes to school.

Tortington · 07/01/2007 21:52

yeah - let the teachers deal with it.

colditz · 07/01/2007 22:45

It's what they're paid for, Innit?

sunnyside · 08/01/2007 07:33

Started ds1 with potty about a week ago. Great for fisrt day - 1 accident, next day two then progressively more accidents each day. He's 2 and 5 months. DS and I make no fuss about the accidents just clean him up but apparently at visit to MIL other day he had accident and was told it was naughty. He's just had accident and told me he was naughty.

Also he seems totally bored with whole thing and is cross when asked if he needs to wee. He's usually happy to do stuff with odd flash point but this is more or less constant. Shall we just go back to nappies and try again in month or so?

IntergalacticWalrus · 08/01/2007 07:55

So far so good.

DS1 had done one poo on the potty and 2 wees, with one accident since 5 30am (accident was when DP was in charge and was too busy watching the sports report on the news)

He's asked to go a couple of times as well (one was successful, the other wasn't)

He's naked bar a t shirt and I am fully prepared to have a piss filled cdarpet (tis only rented anyway. Fecking lanjdlord is crapola. Carpet was unholy when me moved in. Tis more so now!)

Good luck other potty trainers!

IntergalacticWalrus · 08/01/2007 07:58

btw, we were going to leave it as ong as poss, but we got fed up of ds takinghis nappy off to pee on the floor, often where we couldnt see it!

OP posts:
IntergalacticWalrus · 08/01/2007 08:13

AAAARRGGHH!!!!! Now he's developing Potty Phobia!

Now what? Back in nappies?

OP posts:
misspinkcat · 08/01/2007 08:22

DOn't use a potty. Tell him he is big enough to use the loo.

MrsBadger · 08/01/2007 08:23

if true potty fear then perhaps back in nappies and leave it for a month till he's forgotten he was scared

or try trainer seat on the loo?

or (don't underestimate the power of this) will he pee standing up like daddy?

misspinkcat · 08/01/2007 08:23

I am not sure Cod's method of potty training is " all that" iykwim.

misspinkcat · 08/01/2007 08:24

But i do think going back into nappies is the crappest of all ideas.

IntergalacticWalrus · 08/01/2007 08:28

what technique do you suggest then misspinkcat?
