DS1 (2.1) has been asking for the potty for weeks, and has started to take his nappy off for wees and poos etc. I put him off for as long as poss, but 2 incidents this week of shit smearing on walls (Tuesday and yeasterday) have propmted me to get him potty trained.

So far he's done 3 wees on the potty since about 2.30pm and about 4 or so on the carpet. I don't really have a clue what to do.

any tips?

he's only 2.1, there's loads of time to do it later.

I'd be tempted to call these two days a failed attempt and try again in the summer when he can run round the garden with no pants on.

Your call though...

DD 2 years, we started PT yesterday, having had the potty around for three months, and having the odd successful pee or poo by chance on it. We had her in her pygama trousers all mornng, easy to pull down, quickly. We reminded her every time we remembered to that she had no nappy on. She pee-ed eleven times during the three hours. About six were on the potty, asked for by herself, three were in the trousers (we had several ready...) and two were on the floor (no carpets, lucky us).
After so many pees, we put the nappy back on for outside.
Anyway, eleven pees - IS THIS NORMAL??

IntergalacticWalrus · 08/01/2007 08:48

I think 11 pees is normal tbh. DS1 did quite a few yesterday

Also, and I'm sorry to do it here, I asked on another thread, but really can you tell me - our DD knows that Daddy has a willy, but we haven't come up with anything for girls that isn't too medical or MIL friendly enough. (See Front bottom thread)

misspinkcat · 08/01/2007 08:52

DO not put the nappy on - are you trying to put him in therapy?

IntergalacticWalrus · 08/01/2007 08:57

I'm sorry, misspinkcat? Run that by me again?

OP posts:
IntergalacticWalrus · 08/01/2007 08:58

oh lordy, calm, Ive no idea. there aren't too many names for girls bits that aren't either crude or too biologoical.

I've got 2 boys, so I'm no help

OP posts:
misspinkcat · 08/01/2007 09:00

Girls have front and back bottoms ( search the thread archives).

IntergalacticWalrus · 08/01/2007 09:04

DS is now back in nappy.

I suppose I have damaged him psychologically now (according to misspinkvat anyway,)

Toilet training and toilet reflex are 2 entirely different things.
Many parents believe their little darlings are potty trained, just because they can sit them on it after a meal and they will perform. However, they'll still wee/poo in their pants - you'll end up asking them every 20 mins if they want their potty.
I left both mine till 2 yrs 9 months - both potty trained in a couple of days and never ever had an 'accident'.
I sometimes wonder why people are so anxious to get their child on the potty at the earliest opportunity. If you want to keep life easy (mine are only 18 months apart so I didn't want to chase ds1 round the house with a potty when I had ds2 at the boob!) I'd leave it another 6 months. This will also have the advantage of warm weather, so you can spend lots of time out in the garden with the potty - no accidents indoors!
Have fun - I'm soooo glad all that is behind me!

IntergalacticWalrus · 08/01/2007 09:10

hE'S TAKEN HIS NAPPY OFF NOW AND PISSED UP THE WALL.

oops, sorry caps lock (one handed typing)

that was the sound of my head on the desk

OP posts:
beansprout · 08/01/2007 09:12

That will be the psychological damage making him do that

I'm PT at he moment, my god you have my sympathy!!

IntergalacticWalrus · 08/01/2007 09:14

Thing is though, im happy for him to wear nappies, but for sometime he's been telling me he need a wee/poo and the, sure enough, he takes his nappy off to do it. He can take his strides off too, which often makes for a big mess at nap time, when he takes his nappy off to do a poo and then "draws" on the walls with it (I know this won't be remedied with pt particularly, but it's worth a ashot)

I'm just a bit clueless with it all.

IntergalacticWalrus · 08/01/2007 09:14

good luck beansprout!!!!

hjope you arent damaging your child

OP posts:
fortyplus · 08/01/2007 09:15

IntergalacticWalrus - ps you won't have damaged him psychologically! Some people have very strange ideas, don't they? No... do yourselves a favour - leave the nappies on till the summer. And as for the idea of using the loo instead of the potty... much easier to have a potty handy than to have to cart him up to the loo every 20 mins, imo. Not everyone realises that boys are different to girls - we have muscles to 'clench' round our urethra, whereas boys don't. That's why girls are easier to potty train than boys.

IntergalacticWalrus · 08/01/2007 09:16

forty plus, I'm going to have to buy lockable nappies to keep the little bugger in them til then!

OP posts:
IntergalacticWalrus · 08/01/2007 09:16

And agree about the odd ideas.

OP posts:
fortyplus · 08/01/2007 09:17

pmsl (excuse the pun!) at peeing up the wall!!!!
Mine are 11 & 13 so they're out at school, but well remember the days of tearing my hair out when they were little. Good luck

IntergalacticWalrus · 08/01/2007 09:17

mpc hasn't come back to explin her post of 8.52. am i expecting too much?

OP posts:
fortyplus · 08/01/2007 09:18

IntergalacticWalrus - lockable nappies... friend of mine had that problem! She wound sellotape round the whole waistband every time she changed a nappy - that way the littl bugger couldn't undo the tapes!

fortyplus · 08/01/2007 09:19

she's at her psychiatrist, obviously!
