introducing solids??!

I'm wondering when j can introduce my baby to solids I have this woman who comes round as I'm a teenager telling me six months I think that sounds far to late I was thinking 4 months? Any advice

6 months is the guideline, why would that be too late? I weaned one at 4 months (11 years ago) and one at 23 weeks (8 years ago) and the one that I waited longer with was much easier and more stress free and less messy than the one I weaned at 4 months.

I was advised to give little tastes of my own food from four months (teaspoon of sauce, or mash - types of tastes) and then only wean when they are sitting and can lift food from the table to their own mouth which normally is around six months.
In the early days it makes little difference to sleep or how much milk they drink and is just a lot of extra work so there not any reason /benefit in rushing into it.

I started at 6 months as the guidelines suggest. I don't see the need to start any earlier when all the evidence says to wait.

When they can steal food from your plate and put it in their mouth, but this is generally around 6 months.

Why do you think 6 months is a bit late?

6 months is the recommended guidelines. Personally I waited, there's no rush and I prefer to go with the most recent research and evidence.

Six months is the recommended age, based on the latest research. I may start about 5 months with baby rice, because my DS is a big guy, but I'll speak to my health visitor first to see what she thinks. I'm in two minds really, I'd probably only be putting it in front of him so he can play about with it himself rather than feeding it to him.

Trust your own instincts, yes guidelines suggest 6 months but some babies are ready earlier. You'll know when your baby is ready because milk won't be enough for them and will be hungry looking for more food.

My baby is big for nearly three months and it seems milk is never enough for him he just always wants more

Ds was 21 lbs at 23 weeks when we started solids.

It's makes no sense to say they're hungry so they need food. If they're hungry they need more milk.

4 months is too young IMO.

I've had 3 dc with each one it did it when they was ready not when "guidelines " told me I had too. Dc1 was 21 weeks dc2 was 17 weeks dc3 was 26 weeks. Each child is different trust your own instincts to do what's right for your child. I've felt pressured to give dc3 food as he prefers milk to food. At 7m I was told he should be on 3 meals and 3 bottles a day which seems a big leap if only starting to introduce food at 6m. At the moment he's on 4 bottles and 2 meals a day but as I'm learning with dc3 there's no rush and they all get to where they need to be eventually.

He's 16 pounds and he has hungrier milk every 3-4 hours he takes 6-7 ounces sometimes eight he's a hungry baby

He sounds like a normal baby not a hungry one tbh. 3-4 hours is normal as is 6/7/8 ounces. Giving solids is not about filling them up, but to introduce new tastes and textures.

Weight has nothing to do with it btw.

The NHS website is useful. You could also look at the Weaning section of Mumsnet. 6 months is so their gut and swallow reflex is ready. Until age one, milk is the main source of nutrition so if he is hungry, give him more milk! The Health Visitor and GP should give you up to date advice.

Is there are reason for hungry milk at less than 3 months old? It has no more calories than first milk but is supposed to make them feel fuller for longer. There is nothing to say it actually works that way though.

The first formula wasn't enough for him he would feed every hour to two hours he's such a hungry baby now he has hungrier he goes every three to four hours and seems alot more satisfied xox

Katie you know all newborns feed every 1-2 hours right? Sounds like your baby is normal tbh. Follow NHS guidelines, there is no rush to solids!

He sounds completely normal.

Most babies feed every 1-2 hours for the first month then start going 3-4 hours and taking 7-8oz.

I would say if he was feeding every 3 hours and taking 9oz and still seemed hungry then I would say he wasn't satisfied but what he's taking sounds completely normal to me and I've had two reluctant feeders.

I weaned dd1 at 6 months and dd2 wasn't interested so I left her to 7 months and she's still not eating that much at 8 months.

The HV isn't telling you this because you're a teenager. She's telling you it because it's guidelines. They told me the same thing and I'm 31.

My baby was breastfed so don't know how many ounces she was having but she was feeding every 90 minutes or so at that age. What you're doing sounds fine. We started her on solids at 6 months and even though she wanted loads of milk she wasn't too bothered about food.

My hv told me to wait until 6 months too and I'm in my 30s so it's nothing to do with being a teenager.

Lool I get some woman I have to have till he's two years old I get no choice she comes weekly really annoys me and she trys to boss me about everytime do this do that he's my child fgs xox

katie as long as your not putting your child in any danger he's fed washed and well looked after do whatever you feel is best for you and your son and tell the health visitor/support worker or whoever she is what she wants to hear
