my 6 month old still cant roll over!!

i was just hoping for some reassurance really. my ds is 6months and a week and still cant roll over! he wont sit up either! he likes to stand and quite happily stands, supporting his own weight for a few secs.
can anyone suggest any ways to encourage this? he spends quite a bit of his time on his play mat but it doesnt seem to help..

my son is now two, I dont ever remember him rolling over but he charges around like a mad thing these days. He did not stand until 11 months, but his speach development was quite good by 15 months and is now excellent. I would not worry they all get there at their own rate and if yur son is standing he clearly is ok - my doctor said not rolling had something to do with sleeping on the back, in the old days babies rolled over to get there.

Neither of my older two ever learnt to roll at all, except once or twice by accident. dd1 didn't crawl till well over a year, and ds never crawled, just bottom shuffled. Both walked late, too, 18 months and 20 months respectively.

Both are entirely normal.

My dd1 didn't roll till over six months, I think, certainly was only bum-shuffling at a year, didn't walk till around 18 months.

She's now three and walks half a mile with me every day. Oh, and her sister (the little bugger) is 10 months and pulling herself up to standing - they're all totally different.

My dd didn't roll over (all the way) until she was six months, either. And she's definitely not standing yet (at nine months). He's just not doing things in approved HV order! The standing is a good indicator he is just an individualist

My DS2 is fab at rolling over. But only one way He rolls on to his tummy, squawks and is sick but he absolutely cannot roll back
But from what I have seen of other 6m olds, loads of them can't roll over at all, I know one 14m old boy who didn't roll or sit up until he started crawling at 11m - they all do different things at different ages, don't worry

My dd was never much of a roller either, she eventually did it at around 5 or 6 months, but I think found it a bit useless to be honest! She is now almost a year and very happy sitting on her bum not going anywhere thank you very much! I try not to stress out about "why isnt she crawling?? Why isnt she walking??!!" it's just not worth the bother. All babies do things there own way

Yeah, TC I do know a lot of bum shufflers who walked late. As long as they make progress it's fine. It is worth being on the watch as a child who's not getting anywhere much at 18mo might be a worry, but meandthomas don't fret about a 6mo who doesn't roll. My DS1 did it once, only MIL saw and we all say she made it up! He sat early, but then didn't crawl till 11mo. He's fine now, tho hardly the best athlete in the world but a good strong walker. DS2 meanwhile is virtually running (climbing, striding) at 13mo! If your DS likes standing then encourage that, put toys up on the sofa/table etc. Try sitting him propped up then gradually reduce the propping. But he will get it, 6mo is early-ish to sit as well.

My does not do this either.. actually a babies seem almost exactly the same in this department. have read it is just personality and some like action and some like to check out life more - my dd likes to look at things and books.

On the other hand, while I'm sure there is nothing to worry about, keep an eye on the situation. If it's just the rolling over then no big deal, but if he ends up being late with all his milestones, it might be worth mentioning to your doctor.

My 4 year old was late with everything (rolled over at 7 months, sat up at 8 months, crawled at 12 months, walked at 22 months). I wasn't being a totally nervous mum, freaking out, but by the time she was 15 months old her doctor recommended she be seen by a pediatric neurologist, who diagnosed her as having benign congenital hypotonia (low muscle tone). It's no big deal, just means she took longer than other kids to reach her milestones. In fact, just last week she had a speech evaluation and was found to have a lateral lisp, due to low muscle tone in her tongue, and she's going to be in speech therapy for a year.

All I'm saying is, keep an eye on the situation, and if you have a feeling something's not right, talk to your doctor.

DS is 8 months and hasn't rolled yet. KateandtheGirls, my DD(5) also has low muscle tone and speech problems, interesting to hear of someone else in the same situation.

My DS2 (now 8m) rolled over at about the right time so I wrote it in his little book - and has never done it since!

My DS rolled over from his tummy to his back when he was 4 months ... and I thought I had a genius on my hands ...
He then didn't roll over again until he started to crawl at 10 months ...
He is now a perfectly normal, active 4 year old ...

Ds did 3 rolls and then called it a day until he started crawling. I wouldn't encourage it in any specific way, he'll do it when he's ready.

Just taken my 8 month old for her check ups and asked Doctor about rolling over as she doesn't do it either (will roll from tummy to back just to get off tummy - but there's no way she'll go the other way). He said rolling, etc. is great but if they don't so it, it doesn't matter. The one check they do make is for sitting - but they only start to get worried if they're not sitting at 10 months as that might indicate a muscle problem, i.e. not strong enough, etc. Personally I wouldn't worry too much. I get calls every week from my mother-in-law asking my whether she is crawling, standing, etc. and I just ignore. My baby will do whatever she wants in her own time....

ds is nearly 6 months and has rolled onto his side but not rolled over. He is no-where near sitting up, dd was sitting unaided by 6 months. Trying not to compare the two!

I haven't read anyone elses input but I also have a ds who is six months and he doesn't roll over either. Nor does he sit up on his own, he falls forward. He also won't put his weight on his feet for long either. Only a few seconds. But I'm not concerned and he'll be doing it when he's ready. He grabbed the cot rail in the hospital yesterday and pulled himself onto his side.

Ds2 was 6 months old on 9th May and rolled over onto his tummy for this first time yesterday. And I wasn't watching at the time ......He will sit if supported by cushions and stand if supported.

Your ds sounds just fine to me and will do things when he is good and ready.

my dd is 7 months, she doesnt roll either... shes done it a couple of times so i know she can, she just doesnt.... guess she feels she dont need to... she hates being on her belly perhaps your son is the same?
