High heels on a 5 yr old - Am I being unreasonable?

DD is going to be 5 soon so my mum took her on a shopping trip.
They came back with a gorgeous pair of boots and some party shoes. The shoes were from Next and have a 5cm heel.
I told DD that she was too young for heels before the trip. However she convinced my mum they were what she wanted.

It isn't Mum's fault though. I should have warned her what not to buy, but I thought she would have helped her pick flat shoes. She was very strict on my shoes when I was growing up!

I don't like seeing small children clumping around in heels and I want to take them back.

Am I being precious about it?
I'll try and find a link to the shoes. They're not hideous by all means, but I just think she's too young for heels!

slippery slope IMO

Spagblog · 19/11/2006 09:22

I would take them back, I also think that 5 is too young for heels.

Personally, no, I wouldn't let a 5 yr old wear them either

McDreamy · 19/11/2006 09:24

What is it about grandmothers?

My mum is exactly the same - bought my DD a whole rack of heeled dressing up shoes - which are fine I have no problem with her dressing up in heels - but I would NEVER have been allowed even heeled dressing up shoes when I was young let alone real shoes with heels!!!

I agree though - 5 is too young for heels

Trinityrhino · 19/11/2006 09:24

now I've looked at them they are far too old looking for a 5 year old, definitely take them back

totaleclipse · 19/11/2006 09:24

Totally agree, heels, thongs on small children a big no no for me.

foxtrot · 19/11/2006 09:24

no i don't think you are being unreasonable. And not practical anyway for running around at parties.

McDreamy · 19/11/2006 09:25

Definately too young for a 5 year old - do they come in a size 6 I wonder - look really comfy for the Xmas ball

Spagblog · 19/11/2006 09:25

I remember having very small heels on my first holy communion shoes, but then I was closer to 8!

Take them back or lose them. COMPLETELY unsuitable and very bad for her feet. Also gives out wrong signals - high heels elongate your legs and make your bum more prominent ie they are a device to look more attractive in a very grown-up sense. Appalling Next are selling them for this age, tbh. As bad as WHSmith with Playboy stationery.

belgo · 19/11/2006 09:26

I'm really shocked that any shop would sell shoes like that for a five year old, that potentially can do so much damage - in the short term and in the long term.

Spagblog · 19/11/2006 09:27

She put on this pseudo wiggle thing when she tried them on for us.

That was the moment I decided that she couldn't keep them.

Glad you're all agreeing with me.

Oh I find the whole playboy thing totally unacceptable on children's anything, really bad taste in my opinion, especially as they have no idea what it stands for!

hermykne · 19/11/2006 09:29

spag bol - its so wrong to put small childrens feet in high shoes, i actually studied shoe design in cordwainers and there was so much emphasis put on good childrens design.

buying them in "next" guaranteess no experience whatever in shoe fitting, easy come easy come with sales assistants and managers for that matter. there, i am presuming, would be no training in fiiting.

dont let her wear them as once she gets them on she wont want to take them off.

belgo · 19/11/2006 09:30

i'd quite like the black ones for myself.

When is it acceptable for girls to wear heels?

I told DD she would have to wait until her feet stopped growing, but I am not sure if I am living in cloud cuckoo land sometimes.

Sounds reasonable batters! Apparently Bruce Willis once said that he planned to shoot the first boy his daughter brings home and hope word will get around - DH is planning to steal his idea!

Miaou · 19/11/2006 09:56

Spagblog, that's a really good answer (re when her feet have stopped growing). dd1 is 9 and IMO still too young for heels (mind you I don't think I could pay her to wear them!!)

NannyL · 19/11/2006 10:00

would not let a 5year old (or even a 10 year old!) wear heels

they damage their growing bodies, as their muscles are in the wrong place as they are trying to grow...

they would definitley be going back at 1st oppertunity... unworn!

Spagblog · 19/11/2006 10:02

I've told mum and DD and I have chosen some replacements. Pink sparkly ballet pumps!

OP posts:
Twiglett · 19/11/2006 10:12

there is absolutely no way on earth I would allow a child to ever wear shoes anywhere near that

no way on earth

I would be very cross with mother tbh .. you can't blame a 5 year old for trying it on
