Toddler descriptions

DD is 20 months old. I'm finding her descriptions of things she doesn't recognise or have words for both adorable and very accurate. Highlights include the grippy spots on the bottom of the feet on her sleep suits being 'sparkly bubbles' and the piece of mustardy sandwich she stole from me tasting 'spiky'.

My absolute favourite though, came when we were out for a walk a couple of weeks ago and saw black lambs prancing around a field. I asked her is she knew what they were, she stared for a moment and happily announced they were dancing cats. Grin

What have your toddlers come out with?

If I'm talking to someone on the phone, dd will say 'who you hello to Momma?'

youmakemydreams · 19/05/2015 20:22

my mum was baffled when I was little when I asked for a chocolate Oliver. I remember feeling cross and enunciating in an exaggerated manner that I wanted a chocolate ALL OVER. A biscuit not a half covered (chocolate digestive)

When dd was two we were in Tesco and went down the wine and beer aisle and she announced it was the daddy juice. Grin I obviously don't drink of course. Apart from that one time ds1 wrote that mummy liked Rome in his busy book at school Hmm

shockedballoon · 19/05/2015 20:44

DS is 5 now, but these 2 immediately sprung to mind from when he was around 2.

Booby knickers = bra

Willy cheeks = testicles

Grin

Met a very cute toddler in a zoo park the other day who referred to steps as 'updowns'!

MildDrPepperAddiction · 19/05/2015 21:19

Willy cheeks!!??

PHANTOMnamechanger · 19/05/2015 21:23

I love all these. dodgy badgers for jammy dodgers is brilliant.

DD once asked to go to 'the park with the mexican thing'

much questioning later, we realised it was the HEXAGON thing, a dome shaped climbing frame made of hexagons!

yorkshire puds were orchard puddings and eyebrows were ow-brys

42andcounting · 19/05/2015 21:37

My niece used to call fire engines 'favrins' - apparently its the noise they Smile

My 19mo DD wasn't making any farm animal noises until we took her to a farm a few weeks ago. The next day we had the farm book out and said "what does the cow say?"..... " Ooooooohhhh!". Cutest thing ever, even if a little bit like a carry on film Smile

TeamFlood · 19/05/2015 21:39

DD- at age 5, asking for the 'Turkey-wise' colouring pencil (turquoise)
DS- used to call cucumber 'cumbumber' and goggles were 'gobbles' until very recently - He is 6!!

Lovely post, thanks OP!

RedRideMeGood · 19/05/2015 21:55

My DP called a combine harvester a gangangdoomister. Always makes me laugh when I think of it.

queeneileen · 19/05/2015 21:56

My son used to call eyebrows "eyebrowns".

He's 13 now and we pretty still have our own language. Crisps are crippits, hot dogs and noodles (healthy tea!) is snot dogs and poodles.

It keeps us happy.

My niece though, when she was 3 and I called her a silly sausage, said: "I not a sausage, I a bacon!" Love her!

perfectlybroken · 19/05/2015 21:56

We've had plugs for gloves, and jumpoline for trampoline, among other delights!
At the moment, I am having the following rather difficult conversation every morning:

DS1 eats some of his toast and holds up the remainder of the slice
DS1: "what does it look like Mummy"?
Me: (feeling optimistic at this point), "ooh it looks like a boat dear"
DS1: "Nooo, it's not a boat, what's it like?"
Me: (still hopeful) "an elephant?"
DS1: (now a bit angry) "No it's not an elephant tell me what's it like?"
Me: "what do you think it looks like?"
DS1: (very angry) "noooo, you tell me!!!"
and on and on and on

Dollybird99 · 19/05/2015 22:02

my three year old calls Bumble Bees 'bungle bees'!

Also, rather embarassingly, when we were at the zoo with some friends and their children we saw a man with a red mohican. My son loudly asked 'why that man looks like chicken'. We were still laughing days later.....

Notstayingup · 19/05/2015 22:06

DD2 described anything spicy as "too tasty mummy" we all say it now if food is too hot Smile

CoffeeChocolateWine · 19/05/2015 22:17

My DS has loved eating pomegranate since he was really little. He used to call it pink sweetcorn which has still stuck and been adopted by the whole family 6 years later. He also used to call my Russian Doll a dolphin roll!

My DD is almost 3 and one of her favourite snacks is a little pot of frozen peas which she calls 'Elsa beans'! Makes me laugh every time!

siscaza · 19/05/2015 22:17

Dollybird99 I love the red mohican incident, that is genius Grin

NoMummyNoooo · 19/05/2015 22:24

My son calls McDonalds 'Old McDonalds' :-)

Beagle84 · 19/05/2015 22:24

My son calls toothpaste teeth post or just post for short

Also, he quite often refers to chins as beards which can be quite awkward when he's pointing out a "beard" on a woman!

AtomicDog · 19/05/2015 22:35

perfectlybroken give him a couple of years, and the answer will always be 'gun'! Hmm

We have 'auction puddings' here, apparently.

youmakemydreams · 19/05/2015 22:36

Some of these are so funny and very cute.
Dd again used to think the cat we had was called gento. Because when she patted him we always said be gentle.
She also asked me if I wanted her to take the travel nappies sitting on the stairs up (sanitary towels)

Ds2 used to say rhinopotamus. At least he was always half right.

surereadyforchange · 19/05/2015 22:38

DS calls those two sticky out bones on each side of your ankles "toenips".
He's 6 now but passing wind is still a "poo-pop".
Grin

Vickisuli · 19/05/2015 22:45

Dd 2 used to call toilet / loo roll - too roll.

Ds said this morning "I didn't thought of that"

Whole family still refers to Philadelphia as spready cheese.

I'm sure there have been others but(sob) they are growing up now and not so much.

OpenMindedSceptic · 19/05/2015 22:53

DS asked the other day:

'Why do I have pineapples?' He meant nipples.

ozymandiusking · 19/05/2015 23:15

Our trampoline is the Boing Boing.

BookWorm37 · 19/05/2015 23:36

DS told me he had a broo on his knee.... couldn't figure out what he meant until he had two broos (bruise) on his knee!
I've also been asked 'can I go on the confuser?' (computer)

claireyp9 · 19/05/2015 23:37

When I was little we used to call the wrinkles on your hands and feet after our bath 'willy wimples'. And anything that wasn't nice to eat, like lemon, or anything that made you pull a funny face 'made you go gongy (pron. Gong-gee)
