Toddler descriptions

DD is 20 months old. I'm finding her descriptions of things she doesn't recognise or have words for both adorable and very accurate. Highlights include the grippy spots on the bottom of the feet on her sleep suits being 'sparkly bubbles' and the piece of mustardy sandwich she stole from me tasting 'spiky'.

My absolute favourite though, came when we were out for a walk a couple of weeks ago and saw black lambs prancing around a field. I asked her is she knew what they were, she stared for a moment and happily announced they were dancing cats. Grin

What have your toddlers come out with?

My DD1 (now 15) still calls the corner yoghurt things "toilet yoghurts" because she thought the pot looked like a toilet!

Knottyknitter · 19/05/2015 14:30

DB is 30 now, but following a big storm when he was 3, the whole family has known hail as "rattlestones". I added snozzers and snizzors to the family vocab.

ItsRainingInBaltimore · 19/05/2015 15:12

When my DS was about 3 he was really struggling to say 'rhinoceros' and after trying two or three times and thinking long and hard about it, he finally settled on 'why-wos-a-nos.'

Ah, we have carrot cheese here too (Red Leicester).

DS has had an ongoing battle with constipation which means he takes laxatives each night. Sometimes he still won't go and sometimes he has diarrhoea (or overflow to be precise).
He recently experienced the latter in some public loos and asked me rather loudly whether I'd heard his 'bottom wee'. Nice.

ElizabethG81 · 19/05/2015 15:18

According to my DD, my bed is a "cuddle cot" and wine is "mummy's juice" Grin

thatniceperson · 19/05/2015 15:18

My 2 year old says 'my tummy's a bit wobbly' when he's hungry Smile

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 19/05/2015 15:19

Ds used to say ' a loaf of sellotape'Grin

ScorpioMermaid · 19/05/2015 15:30

My ds says 'Spiky' instead of fizzy or spicy
'Fizzy feet' for pins and needles
'Padlet' I have an iPad kids call theirs tablets.. He gets confused bless him.

Kids are funny Grin

minkGrundy · 19/05/2015 15:35

Beasty bunnies- the thing that brings you Easter eggs
Ningangles- just a mispronunciation of triangle
Inside out (my coat) to turn it the right way round
So such (the opposite of no such) as in there is so such thing as a panda isn't there?

Panicmode1 · 19/05/2015 15:44

These are adorable....my children didn't really do lots of sweet mispronunciations but my youngest two little boys used to call butterflies caterflies, and biscuits, gisbets!

HerRoyalNotness · 19/05/2015 16:00

When we first moved to the US, DS1 called Target "the dot shop"
Also used to day lobster raptor for velociraptor.

DS2 says up and down for upside down and often uses the same letter for rhyming things eg pack pack, humpty humpty.

We had a long discussion last night about not wanting to go to Hawhy because of volcanoes, saying not today, morrow or yesterday. When we agreed with him he sensed we weren't telling the truth and said not go to Hawhy on ALL the numbers! (We may be planning a trip to Hawaii in a couple of yrs with friends)

BeCool · 19/05/2015 16:02

DD2 (4) gets very concerned about people using what she calls "the strong" words, which include "stupid" and "hate".

Last weekend we took another child out with us and I had issues driving while listening to a 4yo & 5yo compare their mothers "boobies" and how they conspire to access them and how their respective Mum's deal with it. The other child called them "titties" which confused DD no end for a while -"what are these titties?". :)

BeCool · 19/05/2015 16:03

Houmous is still called Thomas in our house - long may it last.

gonegrey56 · 19/05/2015 16:26

My dd used to call houmous "bosoms" (and look embarrassed...she knew she had somehow got the word wrong, but did not know what else to call it!)

stinkingbishop · 19/05/2015 16:42

Such a gorgeous thread! DTDs (just turned 3)

Broccoli is 'tree flowers'
Farts are 'bottom bubbles'
Corners are 'eeboos' (finally worked out this itself meant 'elbows')
Wine is 'Daddy joos' Grin
And we've got love you/miss you mixed up, which is still lovely, because I get 'miss you Mummy' at bedtime; also 'the most' and 'almost', so I also get 'miss you Mummy, almost'

There's a bit of twintalk going on. No idea what any of it means but 'pompom' and 'saffee, saffee, SAFFEE' are apparently the funniest one liners ever written.

Finally - and spot the bad Mum for just indiscriminately saying 'darling' and not referring to anyone by name - for a long time they kept referring to themselves and each other as 'darling' which I thought was hypercute as in 'Mummy, darling need more milk'. Until I realised THAT'S WHAT THEY THOUGHT THEIR NAME WAS!!!!!

RachelWatts · 19/05/2015 16:53

Stinkingbishop - a friend of mine with twins realised when they were toddlers that one of them thought the other was called Nono.

She couldn't work out why, until she realised 'Nono' was more adventurous than the other, and as a result she was often rushing forward shouting "No! No! Don't do that!"

TheHappyCamper · 19/05/2015 17:02

These are so cute!

DD used to say "leg wrists" when she couldn't remember the word for ankles. We also had to translate "hairy munters" Blush as "scary monsters" when she slept at SILs house at age 2.

She's 6 now and just last week had a reading book about eggs and incubators. She was adamant they should be called "eggtubators" Grin

stinkingbishop · 19/05/2015 17:05

Thanks rachel, at least am not the only one! We were in a garden centre the other day and another Mum was screaming 'wait!!!' as a small boy was headed towards an especially dangerous looking mower and climbed onto it...DTD1 smiled at the Mum, pointed at the mower and said 'Wait is there' Smile.

HalfWomanHalfCake · 19/05/2015 17:28

My two eldest DDs are teenagers now but we still call rabbits "babbits" and daffodils are "dapsy dills".
And Santa will forever be known as Farmer Kissups Grin

smashedhen · 19/05/2015 17:29

When my DS was about 4 he was playing on the computer, and suggested that we needed to bigamise something (the opposite of minimise obviously!)

YouMakeMyHeartSmile · 19/05/2015 17:31

scarlett Peppa is Boppa here too!

HippyChickMama · 19/05/2015 17:37

I've remembered some more. DS once asked if we could have a cat puppy (a kitten) and he also wanted a brother that's a girl!

PeoniesforMissAnnersley · 19/05/2015 17:39

My little brother once said that something was "smaller than a pea's ear"

theaveragebear1983 · 19/05/2015 17:48

My nearly 3 year old DS had us all puzzled when he asked me to draw a picture of a 'Mexican doctor'....he went on about it, getting more and more irate. Turns out he meant 'mr conductor' from dinosaur train.....

Purplehonesty · 19/05/2015 17:57

We have Radiheaters too and pins and noodles

Although not a toddler my 5 yo came home from school, fist bumped me and proudly said "inspected"

I thought dh and I were going to expire from laughing.
