What do your children call their grandparents?

Suddenly realised it would kind of be up to me as they will probably call them what I do... My parents don't know what they want to be called while partners have been very specific. At least they haven't all said the same thing!

I'm watching this with interest. My parents will obviously be 'nan' and 'grandad' or variants thereof. PILs will also be variants of similar- no one has made particular demands. However, my parents are divorced, both with new partners but I wouldn't say I was particularly close with either of them. My mum's partner hadn't even mentioned it but I was on the phone to my dad last week and he told me to 'have a think' about what we'll call his partner. Now, the divorce was pretty messy and my mum pretty much hates dad's new partner, so 'nan' is out of the question (3 nans might be a bit confusing for child anyway!) But dad seems to be insinuating that she be called 'Nanny Kerry' (name changed, obv) or similar. My dad is usually pretty laid back about everything but his missus- we had to change our entire wedding seating plan to accommodate her- so I can't see him letting it drop. I just said that baby won't be talking for at least a year (!?) so they'll figure some sort of naming convention out by themselves, which seemed to placate him. But there's no easy answer! Some people can get unnecessarily sensitive over these things when it's really just semantics. I can't remember a time when I was 'told' to call my grandparents a particular thing, iyswim?

I hate "nanny". That's a goat :).

Mil insists on nanny, and constantly refers to herself in the third person -"nanny get you a drink".

I prefer grandma/grandpa, or variants of.

My DS has 8 grandmothers and 6 grandfathers! He worked out names for himself mostly and he knows exactly who he is talking about, although it does help that some live further away then others

kelda · 19/03/2015 17:12

And another Oma and Opa Smile

DuelingFanjo · 19/03/2015 17:13

Gran and papa

TranquilityofSolitude · 19/03/2015 17:14

My parents - Granny and Pa (was actually supposed to be Grandpa but he changed it and, predictably, it was the only name any of his grandchildren could say for ages!).

PILs - Grandma and Grandad.

Fortunately this was what DH and I had called our grandparents so it felt quite natural.

GoooRooo · 19/03/2015 17:18

My mum - Nanny

My dad - Grandad

Dad's partner - her name

MIL - Grandma

FIL (when he was alive) - Pop

FIL's wife - Nanny Sue

All of them chose what they were to be called themselves. Originally MIL wanted to be Nanny but when she heard what my mum wanted to be called she changed it to Grandma. I had two nannys growing up but she thought it would confuse DS (I think she just wanted something all of her own)

bigTillyMint · 19/03/2015 17:20

PIL - nanny and granddad

DM - grandma

GoooRooo · 19/03/2015 17:20

By the way - when I have grandchildren I hope to be a Nanny. LOL @ it being a goat!

'Grandma' makes me think of doddering, grey haired old ladies.

yomellamoHelly · 19/03/2015 17:25

Grandma and Grandpa. (Grandma always sticks in my throat - maybe because of that song? - wish it were Granny really)

My mum is Gran.

Luciferbox · 19/03/2015 17:25

My parents- Grannie and Grandad

PIL- Nanna and Grampa

GreatPIL- Nanny and Bampi.

Pikkewyn · 19/03/2015 17:28

We have Grandma and Grumpy (DH's) and Ouma and Oupa (mine - South African)

dementedpixie · 19/03/2015 17:31

my mum is gran. Dh's mum is nanny (which I hate as it doesn't sound right to me). dh's dad was grandad.

I called my grandparents gran and grandpa

Iloveonionchutney · 19/03/2015 17:33

My parents are Grandma and Grandad, Dh parents are Nanna and Grumpy (his choice lol)

pennygirl26 · 19/03/2015 17:34

my step kids call my parents grumpy and extra granny (running joke ) they also have there nana gran and grandpa.

Bowlersarm · 19/03/2015 17:34

Pil - granny and grandpa
Dm - nanny

I hate nanny, and strongly dislike granny and grandma. When it's my turn I think I'm going to go for Nana unless I can think of something better.

vladthedisorganised · 19/03/2015 17:35

My parents - Granny and Granda
PIL - Nanna and Granddad

I expected DM to be 'Granny VladSr' and MIL to be 'Granny MIL' but apparently this is unusual. (I had two Granny + first names)

blongo · 19/03/2015 17:41

We took the view that it was entirely up to the gp's what they wanted to be called. It does after all become 'their' name. Having 3 or 4 grannies is not confusing for a child, and probably fairly normal.

Stillyummy · 19/03/2015 17:41

Thanks for the suggestions, keep them comming! Apparently my mum wants somthing that doesn't sound old Hmm

We have grandma and grandad for my folks. Fil and partner is seaside grandad and nanna. Mil and partner are nanny and grandpat (he's called pat).
We also have great grandad and super grandad and super nan.
I found it very hard to think of names for everyone and make sure they all learnt them!!!!
