What do your children call their grandparents?

Suddenly realised it would kind of be up to me as they will probably call them what I do... My parents don't know what they want to be called while partners have been very specific. At least they haven't all said the same thing!

My parents - Nanna and Grandpa (I wouldn't allow Nanny because I am one for my job!)
DP's - Grandma and Grandad

When i was a child I had Nanny and Grandad and Granny and Grandpa.

AtiaoftheJulii · 19/03/2015 19:20

I'm not listing ours as they would be very identifying, lol.

But wanted to reply to the PP with the remarried father - my kids and nieces/nephews call my FIL's wife by the nickname my FIL calls her. She was going to be Granny realname, but the kids grew up with FIL referring to her by the nickname and very quickly followed suit.

One thing that annoys me is that my niece and nephew call their shared grandfather by a different name to what my kids call him. I have dc older than my nephew, and FIL was already Grampa, but then my nephew couldn't say Grampa (being younger) and Papa stuck. Extremely confusing when we are altogether. And I am irrationally peeved by it - once a grandparent has a name, that's that, dammit!

OP, my mum refused to be "Granny" as it was too old. She is Ya Ya (variant of the Greek Yia Yia). PIL are Grandma and Poppa.

CumbrianExile · 19/03/2015 19:25

My parents - Grandma (she insisted) and Granda (yes, we are Northern haha).

PIL - Nanny and Pops - these were already established by DN.

Its funny the differences in peoples views on names. In my family, Grandma has always seemed 'young' and Nanna 'Old' - but my friends family view Grandma as 'old'

spiderlight · 19/03/2015 19:27

My dad is Tadcu and my mum would have been Mamgu (Welsh)
DH's parents are Grandma and Pops to all their grandchildren.

Natanotherone · 19/03/2015 21:10

DHs parents don't get called anything as they don't make any effort to see them.

My parents are lovingly referred to as "Ampa" and "Nou Nou" DS (2) came up with that himself obviously couldn't quite say grandpa and my mum is a loony who sings him a made up song called "Nimmy Nou" so Nou Nou came from that... Suits them both perfectly though and DD has just started saying both too

WhingeyMinge · 19/03/2015 21:20

My mam and stepdad - nanna and grandad

My dad - grancher

DP's parents - granny and bampi

Xocaraic · 19/03/2015 21:20

By their first names.

Florin · 19/03/2015 21:21

My parents are the same as I called my Grandparents. They are
Mum-ma and Papa.
Pil's we allowed them to choose but Nanna and Nanny were banned they are only for goats. We have Grandma and Grandpa. They are divorced though and Grandpa has a younger wife so she is the nickname Grandpa calls her.

fish88 · 19/03/2015 21:25

My parents are Nanna and Pops.
PIL are Nanny and grandad. Bit of a family joke on my partners side about being a Nanny got, MIL likes being called it.
Great grandparents are grandma and grandad because that's what I call them.

OhMjh · 19/03/2015 21:33

Dad = grumps
Step mum = nana

Mum = plum ( her name is Victoria and she was referred to as Victoria Plum when she was younger. She's 43, and felt she was far too young to be something like grandma )
Step dad = Grizzly ( he's known as grizzly by his nephew so it was a natural step)

FIL = Grandpa
MIL = Nanny

GinAndSonic · 19/03/2015 21:34

My parents- Nana and Grandad
My maternal grandparents- Nana and Grandpa
Stbxhs Nanna - Nanna Katie when he and his nanna were involved / interested
My paternal grandmother - Nana if she was interested in us at all

I called all four of my grandparents Nana and Grandad.

OhMjh · 19/03/2015 21:34

Oh! And I had a Gruncle. He was my grandmas life partner who wasn't my grandad or my uncle, so they mashed it together!

MrsPoldark · 19/03/2015 21:35

My parents were always going to be granny & grandad (that's what I called both mine). My PIL were to be gran & grandpa. But MIL started referring to herself as granny. When my dd was about 3 she distinguished them with wee granny (my mum) & big granny (mil, v true serves her right). Also had 2 great grans - Nonna (Italian) & great gran (aka the fossil but only by us never the dc)

2014MrsH · 19/03/2015 21:36

ArcheryAnnie · 19/03/2015 21:42

MIL = grandma
PIL = grandad

Mine are dead but in reference to them it's "Granny [my mum's name]" and "[my dad's occupation] grandad".

waterlily200 · 19/03/2015 21:43

I had 2 Grans and gran dads growing up and it caused no end of confusion this gradually became grandma and grandad and gran and grandpa as we got old to stop the confusion.

When I was pregnant with DD I said straight away I wanted different names and as my parents were grandma and grandad to my niece it felt natural,that they have the same names with my DD especially as they see them pretty much every day.
This got MILs back up because she wanted to be grandma. She asked what she would be called and I said it was up to her as long as it wasn't the same. She asked my husband privately to be grandma deliberately because she knew my feeling and put on the tears to DH caved and said yes. I decided just to put up with it as they live far away anyway. Then I sent a invite for DD first birthday and the name space was tiny so wrote gran and grandad and she took the huff!!! I genuinely didn't think just looked at the space and filled it. I couldn't believe it gran is short for grandma and I had no room. She'll be lucky to get an invite next year! Anyway following this she has decided that she wants to be Granny because that's what they call Maggie Smith on Downton. I was a bit confused by this and my SIL explained that she wants to be the traditional 'Grandma' figure and so if granny is good enough for Downton it's good enough for her.
I have now lost the will to care we will see how my daughter feels when she's older.

My advice is it can mean a lot to some people but ultimately the child will find a way to differentiate them in the future. Don't let it stress you out too much.

Laquila · 19/03/2015 21:49

My parents = nana and grandad
Husband's parents = omi and opi
My grandparents = grampy and grandma

As AtiaoftheJulii says above, cousins should use the same name for grandparents, to avoid confusion!

In my family, we alternate with each generation, so my grandma's mum was nana Surname, her daughter became grandma, and her daughter (my mum) became nana when my son was born. So if my boy ever has kids, it looks like I'm stuck with grandma!

PomeralLights · 19/03/2015 21:57

DM & DF: grandma and gramps
MIL & FIL: nanny and grandad
DH's grandparents: granny and pops
Didn't even plan it that way it's just worked out! Me & DH are going to secretly work on dd to call FIL 'pop pop' though coz we love it (but he hates it)!

moodyoyo · 19/03/2015 22:04

This is really interesting. My mother (despite being 52 this summer) is still insisting that she is too young to be a "Grandma" or a "Nan". She watches quite a lot of Big Bang Theory and one of the characters calls his Grandma his "Meemaw" and so (most unfortunately) my mum refers to herself as my DD's "Meemaw" Blush When we're at home just us though, I call refer to my mum as my DD's "Nana". My Dad is "G-Dad". Blush

MIL and FIL are quite simply "Granny" and "Grandad" Smile

ISeeNoReasonForBandage · 19/03/2015 22:09

PIL - Grandma and Grandad
DM & DF - Mama (pro. Mar-Mar) and Papa

FelixFelix · 19/03/2015 22:11

DM & DF are Nanny & Pops.

MIL & FIL are Nana & Grandad.
