What do your children call their grandparents?

Suddenly realised it would kind of be up to me as they will probably call them what I do... My parents don't know what they want to be called while partners have been very specific. At least they haven't all said the same thing!

MIL = Nanna (her choice, not mine, I hate it), FIL = Grandpa + name
My mum = granny
And then kids will throw you a curveball every now and then - DS couldn't quite manage 'grandpa' when he was little and so my dad gets called Bummer!

kaffkooks · 19/03/2015 22:16

PIL - grandma and grandad
My mum - granny. Unfortunately, my mum is known as grandma to my brother's children as his MIL was already granny to 7 other grandchildren! Ideally have some consistency between cousins to avoid confusion.

AuditAngel · 19/03/2015 22:16

Luciferbox are you related to me? Did your Bampi live in Fratton (Portsmouth)?

Grandma and Grandad ( my side )
Grandma ( late MIL )
Nana and gramps ( boak ) DH dad and stepmum
Well that's what they like , in reality the DC call them their names

AuditAngel · 19/03/2015 22:22

Whingyminge are you also related to me? I gave never come across another Bampi before.

In our case my oldest cousin couldn't say Grandpa and he became Bampi. In turn, we wanted my dad to keep Bampi going, but the oldest grandchild insisted on Papa

AuditAngel · 19/03/2015 22:23

My parents Granny and Papa, PIL are Nona and Nando (his name was Fernando).

We also have a great aunt called Nanny Joy and her husband was Papi

Trinpy · 19/03/2015 22:25

My ds is too young to call them anything yet but my mum is referring to herself as Granny and my dad is Grandad.

Dh's parents are calling themselves Mama and Papa which I think is confusing since ds already calls me Mama Confused . Dh said he would speak to them about it a few months back but MiL is still calling herself Mama so I'm assuming he hasn't...

SeraOfeliaFalfurrias · 19/03/2015 22:32

My mum - Grannie (with an ie, not a y, not sure why)
My dad - Grandpa Bob
My stepmum - Granny Gertrude
DH's dad - Saba Amos (Saba is grandfather in Hebrew)
DH's stepdad - Saba Shmuel
DH's mum, when she was still alive - Savta Ada (Savta is grandmother in Hebrew)

(names have been changed)

My step-niece and nephew call my dad and step-mum Wawa and Wawi.

pasbeaucoupdegendarme · 19/03/2015 22:33

My parents are Granny and Grandpa (or whatever pet variant thereof dd chooses!)

Fil and SMil Grandad and Grandma.

Welsh Mil is Nain.

Vickisuli · 19/03/2015 22:36

My mum and dad are Grandma and Granddad, my in-laws are Nanny and Granddad, when we have to distinguish between the granddads we say their surnames or "Granddad with Nanny!"

They chose what to be called, I think, and it's not so much that you tell your kids what to call them but they will obviously call them whatever you say from a young age, unless they make up their own name. My nephew calls his 'other' granddad "Grandad Whiskers" because he has a beard!

My mum chose Grandma because that was what I called her mum, also to them Nanny sounds like a person who you pay to look after your child, not a grandparent, and also my Granny (my dad's mum) was still alive when my kids were born, so my mum wouldn't have called herself that.

When I was young I had Grandma and Granddad and Granny and Granddad.

MIL (actually DH's stepmother) already had several grandchildren by the time we had our kids so she was already known as Nanny, don't know if her choice or her kids or grandkids.

DH's mum died before the kids were born but we refer to her as Nanny Ann.

I like Oma and Opa but think it would be a bit odd to use unless you come from a country that use it.

33goingon64 · 19/03/2015 22:58

Usually Granny and Grandad and Grandma and Grandpa. But after a recent holiday DS has started screeching 'Philiiiiiip' to my Dad, copying my Mum!

24hourM0MMY · 20/03/2015 02:48

My mum: Naani
My Dad: Naanaa

DH's mum: Grandma
DH's dad: Junka (this is what our son started calling him out of the blue, of his own free will. We have no idea why, but 'Junka' loves it so it's stuck.

Naani and Naanaa are north indian for maternal grandparents.

Katekoom · 20/03/2015 05:28

My mum = Nanna Sue (i dont think that sounds too old)
My dad = Grandad surname
His gf = Nanny Cat
Partners mum = Grandma
Partners dad = Grandad surname
His wife = Nanny Lou

Kraggle · 20/03/2015 05:48

Dh's parents are Grandma and Grandad (already established by my nieces) but dd who is nearly 2 calls fil GrandGrand at the minute as she couldn't quite manage Grandad and I think the name will stick!

My mum asked to be Grandma as well so she is and my dad is Grandpa as I call him Pa mostly and it helped to distinguish between my parents and PIL.

Weebirdie · 20/03/2015 05:50

Nana and Babu.

birdofthenorth · 20/03/2015 06:20

Mine: Granny and Grandpa
ILs: Nana and Grandad

They all chose based on their own associations (largely wanting to be or not be whatever their own parents had been).

Two light hearted words of warning:

Firstly, if both sets are called he same thing, it might be worth being Nana X and Nana Y or whatever. I was in the room when a friend answers a call from his mum to learn his Grandad had died. "Oh no!" he said. "Which one?"!

Secondly, if they are ever likely to be picked up from nursery or school by a grandparent, it is helpful they are not called something so informal you're embarrassed to let teachers know! My friend's little girl has a "Grammy Monster" and a "Gra Gra" and doesn't know them by anything else so nursery staff have to shout "x, Gra Gra's here!"

Also worth clocking is that Nana is by far the easiest of the regular grandmother names for babies to say, so if you've got a female relative going to be more involved in their care that might be worth bearing in mind. DS could say Nana at 12 months but us only just mastering Granny at 24.

On my husband's side, they are Grandma and Granddad. On my side, it is Nanny, and my late father was Grandpa, but my mother has remarried, so her new husband, who is wonderful, is Papa Don.

LosingNemo · 20/03/2015 09:54

We've got a Grandma & Stepdad's name, Nanny and Grandad and Grandad and Granny. They all chose their own.
I hate Nanny and Granny but I suppose it's not how I'm known...

Izzy24 · 20/03/2015 10:12

I would happily be any of the names on this thread when/if my stepchildren have children. In my dreams......!

Coedcanlas · 20/03/2015 10:40

Oma and Opa here too. Only one set of grandparents left.

hufflebottom · 20/03/2015 10:43

Xp's parents- nanny and grandad

My parents-nan nan and grad

JumpJockey · 20/03/2015 10:50

DHs parents: Grandma and Grandpa

My dad: Baddad (because dd1 couldn't say Granddad) Grin
My mum died when I was little, so she's talked about as Mummy's Mummy.

NeedsAGreenCardForFantasyLand · 20/03/2015 11:07

I grew up in New England, and there often people would call the mother's parents Grandma and Grandpa; the father's parents were Nana and Pop-Pop.

The author Robert Fulghum wrote an essay about this, a woman didn't want to be called Granny because it made her feel old. So her husband played along and they became known as Delilah and Fritz to the kid. (That said, my mother is Grandma, my in laws are Oma and Opa, as my husband is German and we live there).

Chillyegg · 20/03/2015 11:12

DH's parents: (mil) Daaadi or bei G
(FIL) gandad or babba G

My mum will be grandma or G-Ma Jules if she gets her way
