What do your children call their grandparents?

Suddenly realised it would kind of be up to me as they will probably call them what I do... My parents don't know what they want to be called while partners have been very specific. At least they haven't all said the same thing!

My mum and dad are nanny and granddad, they weren't worried about sounding old as its pretty clear to anyone that they're early 40s

OH's parents are Nain and Taid (North Welsh)

BarbarianMum · 20/03/2015 13:13

Gran and Grandpa (dh parents)

Oma (Greman) and Yayo (Spanish) - my parents.

We were lucky cause everyone got what they wanted. Had all been English would have been harder as 'Gran and Grandpa' were already used by cousins for dh's parents.

I'm Granny Jane and my ex-husband is Grandad Ralph. My partner is Andrew.

My parents: Nan(na) and Grandad

DH's parents: Gran and Poppy

TwigletLola · 20/03/2015 15:39

At one point my grandad fixed lawnmowers so he and my nan were called "Nan and Granddad Lawnmower", my other granddad was quite short so he was "Little Granddad" and my other granddad worked in a chocolate factory when I was younger so he and my nan were called "Nan and Granddad Chocolate". I'm 25 and still call them this! DP had "Nan and Granddad Chickens (they kept chickens)" and Nan and Granddad (Town name)".

My son only really has his Grandad to worry about but still calls him Grandad Peter. Growing up I had a Gra Gra and Grandad and a Nana (just the one N in the middle) and Gar - these evolved from early attempts to say something else and stuck!

RL20 · 20/03/2015 16:45

Growing up I had a 'Nannan and Grandad' and 'Little Grandma and Big Grandad'! It goes without saying that my little grandma was very petite, and my big grandad was tall and big!
I'm expecting a baby in a few weeks time and I'm still unsure of what my little one will call my mum, I'm thinking Nana. And my dad will probably just be grandad. My partners dad will be 'grandad (his name)' but also in debate about my partners mum, as he has always called his grandma 'Mama' pronounced 'mommar'. I really don't want my child to call his mum that as it sounds to similar to 'mum' Hmm

Breadwidow · 20/03/2015 16:52

My mum's name is Annabelle so when she was having a freak out about not wanting to be nanny , grandma or granny (felt it made her sound old) when I was pregnant my brother in law suggested nanabelle and it's stuck, and my dad has become grandrew (he's Andrew). Mil is Nanny (first name) though she wanted to be gran but my DH hates gran (think she's ok about it!) and her partner is grandad (first name)

RL20 · 20/03/2015 16:54

Breadwidow, I like Nanabelle! Very clever

OneEyedWilly · 20/03/2015 17:36

My Mum - granny
My Stepdad - pa
My Dad - grandad
DP's mum - nanny
My grandad - grandad

The kids in the family so far differentiate between the Grandads by saying MY grandad or YOUR grandad iyswim. I also hate nanny but it was established long before I could have had a say and DP and his mum like it

catg83 · 20/03/2015 18:08

Just as an aside, we call my mum Nanny/Nan which is what I called my own Nan. Have always grown up assuming that this was popular. Seems it isn't. Try finding a birthday card with 'Nanny' on it. Almost impossible ....... !!

AuditAngel · 21/03/2015 08:14

DD2 has started calling my mum Grannar, (she has also started calling me Mither /Muvver)

Lara2 · 22/03/2015 09:46

Oma and Opa - German

Far Far - Swedish

Bella (Abulla) and Bello (Abullo)- Spanish

Complicated family! Grin

TiedUpWithString · 23/03/2015 11:54

My Grandmother is called Great Nanny Sophie

My parents
Grandma and Grandad

DH's parents (inc step parents)

Nanny Carole and Grandad Jim

Grandad Mike and Grandma Sarah (they keep signing cards and stuff with Grandpa but DD always calls him Grandad).

When we're with them they're referred to just by the first bit but when we talk to DD about them we differentiate with the names apart from my parents who seem to have held no additional name special status.

I have recently noticed though that DD (4) actually says Trandad Grin.

TiedUpWithString · 23/03/2015 12:00

My MiL insisted on Nanny as she wanted to be the polar opposite of her own mother who was Grandma. DD called her Grandma an awful lot and got a snappy ITS NANNY back every time. Then DD got mixed up and called my mum Nanny Grin who wanted to be Grandma to be the opposite of her very much alive mother. however my mum just shrugged and said 'she'll call me what she calls me'.

DD has now got to grips with all the variations.
