Well there had to be one...
Thought I might as well start it at Fennels suggestion.
You have all read enough from me how about you?

Hi Mrs D - how long does she go after you put her down at 11pm then? I was using Infacol but have now stopped and haven't noticed any difference - I don't think ds has colic, just is quite windy but that could be normal anyway -who knows!

MrsDoolittle · 26/05/2004 21:58

I was pretty chuffed last night - Lucyjones. She slept form 11pm til 4.30am last night. It has been 3.30 but it seems to be getting later and later
Like you I am coming to the conclusion she is not colicky but actually windy at times. I read on another thread that too much foremilk makes them windy so I have tried keeping her on the same side for longer. I think that often she just sucks for comfort and not because she needs feeding. The last couple of days she seems less windy.

Hi - ds also seems to be less colicky - not sure if it's because of what we're doing (gripe water and spacing feeds out to every 3 hours) or if he's just growing out of it - thank god though - although he still cries quite a bit, it's definitely a different cry - and I can cope with the "I'm tired/hungry/bored" cries much better than the awful screamy cries...

Mrs D - we've got ds feeding every 3 hours now (more or less - can be 2 1/2 if he's crying and I'm fed up with trying to entertain him!), but he does have closer feeds around tea time - can be every 1 - 2 hours - but I don't mind 'cos I think of it as stoking him up for bedtime! He then goes down at 7pm (worked tonight but last night took me until 8pm to get him to sleep...) and goes through until 1.30am, and then until 4.30am. He's kind of like a little clock at the moment with those times. The worst thing then is that he's either wide awake at 4.30am, or will have another hour, but that's it - and it's tooooooo early to start the day! Not sure how to alter this - probably can't until he's ready to sleep longer.. (YAWN).

Well, I logged on to say that colocynth granules (recommended by Mears for colic) can be bought from Neals Yard - but it looks as if none of you need them right now!
Just back from taking dd to the osteopath (who is also a homeopath - hence the info about colocynth).
Has anyone's baby had projectile poo ?! I was changing dd this morning at just the wrong time... it shot out, on to the changing mat and beyond... lovely

Metrobaby · 27/05/2004 00:03

I tried to find the colcoynth granules too and didn't have any luck either. DS is still windy - but now he is 1 month I intend to try him out on gripe water. I've had much better results though with the cranial osteopath. I find though I have to make sure I get up wind after and during every feed as if I don't, ds starts suffering.

I try and get ds to go approx 3hrs between feeds. Mind you he feeds for 1 hour. I keep him on the first boob for at least half and hour as I heard the same thing about too much foremilk causes windiness. I can't wait until he grows out of it.

hope everyone had a good weekend. we went away for the night, and then out on a picnic, it was all lovely for a while but by sunday afternoon we were all totally exhausted and regretting ever trying to go away or do anything interesting ever again! Baby seems to be ill, another cold or maybe chickenpox, very needy and windy. all of us sleeping badly cos of going away and staying in bedrooms without curtains. I am so tired. when dd3 sleeps well the others wake up cos of the light. and last night the kids all slept and the cat woke us up at 3am instead.

and my nipples are really sore again I am looking longingly at bottles...

dot1 · 29/05/2004 17:35

Hi all - well, the gripe water's really worked - no more colic! Just an ordinary crying baby now - whenever he's hungry, tired, bored....! Starting to work on a little bit of controlled crying - i.e. leaving him a bit when he's crying 'cos we're so fed up - and yesterday morning it worked! Of course this morning it didn't... But it's just so wonderful not to have him screaming all day I don't care at the moment about anything else!

LucyJones · 29/05/2004 19:48

Hi everyone. Fennel - where did you go, anywhere exciting? Dot1 - glad you're over the colic. We're having our 8 week check on Friday - can't wait to see how much ds weighs

dolbear · 30/05/2004 15:55

Dot - It's really wierd reading your posts, we must think alike! Every time I read one of your posts there is usually something you have said that causes me to think "I'm doing that now" or "dd does that"!!
Dd seems to be over the colic now and I find myself leaving her more (Controlled crying, I guess). I feel better leaving her for a bit because she can see better, her crying is not distressed just more grisely. When I do pick her up after she has been crying she usually looks at me like there was nothing the matter anyway - she just wanted picking up.
I am so pleased that she seems to be settling a little because I was really starting to flag.

Fennel · 31/05/2004 12:31

mrs D and Dot, glad to hear your babies are settling a bit. my dd3 is less settled, windy and snuffly. not all the time though, just a couple of long phases every day.

how are you all with other children doing? my dds have turned into spoiled misbehaving brats, I think it's cos we've been soft on them since having the baby so they don't feel left out or jealous, but they are now ignoring what we say! tantrums, staying up for hours, etc. Time to turn into Gestapo Mummy....

Fennel · 31/05/2004 12:34

Lucyjones, we didn't go anywhere exciting, just inner city Leeds to see a friend who lives there. we are planning, rather ambitiously/stupidly, to go camping this next weekend. now that will be very tiring. am expecting serious sleep deprivation with all 3 dds wakeful and excited. but we don't want to be stuck in the city all summer.

LucyJones · 31/05/2004 14:10

Good luck with the camping Fennel - I hope the weather stas nice for you! I love Leeds - live in Kent now but most of my family come from Leeds and Nottingham

dolbear · 31/05/2004 15:26

camping ? blimey
have decided to try soem controlled crying as ds has learnt the cry and she will come trick , am having trouble deciding when enough is enough do not want to get into stuck as there is nought wrong and he just want picking up and will not be put down at the mo
on top of all this new baby stuff my dad has left my mum after 30 yrs and she now may have to sell her home , my nan looks as if she has developed cancer in her pelvis ! other than that all quiet here

hewlettsdaughter · 31/05/2004 18:08

dolbear - sounds as if you have loads going on at the mo. Really sorry to hear about your mum and dad, and your nan. Have these things been on the cards or were they a complete shock?
I have another baby who is happiest being held, and doesn't like to be put down. Don't want to shout too loud (yet), but it looks like the breastfeeding is slowly improving...
LucyJones, I am from Nottingham.

dot1 · 02/06/2004 13:32

Fennel - camping??!!!! We've just booked a caravan holiday for the first week in July and I think I'm brave doing that, and not staying in a hotel!!

ds2 was fantastic last night - slept from 7pm - 2am, and then until 6am!! His best night - long may they continue...! He's getting used to being put in his cot for sleeps now - I always put him in awake, and sometimes he'll protest for a minute or two, but that's it. Ds1 was the same - thank goodness...

I seem to have got his morning naps sorted - he goes down for an hour about 2 hours after waking up, but I can't get the hang of what he needs in the afternoon, so he's always grumpy at tea time - my fault as I think he's just tired and fed up, but as we tend to go out quite a bit during the day, I find it tricky getting him to have a longer sleep if we're out and about. Ah well, at least he's settling at night - the most important thing!

Meanwhile he's guzzling through the ounces on his 1 formula feed - got through 6 ozs last night with no problem and wanted more... Will have to start making up 7oz. Is anyone else giving a bottle - how many ozs do you make up?

Dolbear - sorry to hear about your parents - this happened to me about 10 years ago and although I was a 'grown up', it was still awful to go through for the whole family.

Mrs D - know what you mean re:leaving them to cry for a bit - we're doing that with ds aswell, and I think it's helped with getting him to sleep better. Trying not to think I'm mean controlled crying Mummy, but the first time it happened was because I was packing our car up and literally didn't have chance to go and get him when he was crying - so left him for about 5 - 10 minutes, and he fell asleep! Once you know they can do it it's such a relief...!

MrsDoolittle · 03/06/2004 17:29

Hi Ladies,
I'm busy trying to find out what reusable nappy to use. Motherease or Bumbles? Any ideas?
I have been to stay with dm for a few days this week. We had words on the first night, which was inevitable because we disagree and so many things and I can't keep my mouth shut. Once we had got that out of the way it was very nice to beable to shower, nip into town, go to the hairdresser and do my own thing for a little while. Dd was just given to me for feeding, otherwise she was bathed, changed and taken out in her pram, and I didn't have to worry. So once I had forced myself to let go it was very nice.
I spoil her apparently but not leaving her down???

Dolbear - sorry to hear about your family problems
Fennel - very impressed with your camping plans. I'm too chicken. We are hoping to go to a cottage this summer.
Dot - I find that dd settles much better when I have been at home a few days. It seems when I go out that I mess up her tentative sleeping schedule and she grisels all evening. I need her to sleep in the morning really instead of all afternoon, then I can do all the housey stuff when she is asleep.
Dd settles at 11pm and goes until 5, which I think is great. But I do keep the poor chicken awake and griseling after 6pm. I'd like to start putting her to bed earlier now, although I would expect her to wake for a feed at 11pm. Hopefully she would go to sleep again afterwards. The light mornings mean that she won't go back to sleep after 6. Having said that, the room I stayed in at my parents had heavy dark curtains and neither of us stirred until 9am - How great is that???
HD - How is the breast feeding going now?

OP posts:
hewlettsdaughter · 04/06/2004 18:11

Good that you had a bit of a break MrsD - take the help and ignore the advice you don't agree with! Breastfeeding is going ok here - thanks for asking. I have just thrown the nipple shields away! Although dd still doesn't open her mouth wide, she is getting milk and I am not getting too sore so things are definitely getting better .
I am not putting dd down much at all (have started carrying her around the house in a sling) and wonder if I am storing up problems for later... it does seem to be what she needs though, and having her in bed with us has meant our sleep has not been too badly affected (in that she settles easily next to us). You basically find a way that works, don't you. DD gets colicky whenever she needs to poo, but has been pretty mellow otherwise in the last few days - think she may be having a growth spurt actually as she's sleeping a lot.

hewlettsdaughter · 04/06/2004 18:13

PS Sorry can't advise on the nappies as we're using disposables (would be interested to know what you end up with though, MrsD).

dot1 · 04/06/2004 19:53

Mrs D - I'll ask Bea - she's a friend of mine who sometimes posts on Mumsnet and she's a huge fan of reusables - has used them with her first dd who's now nearly 3, and has a 3 month old ds who I think she's just started using them with. I'll check which ones she uses - or she might see this post!

ds has taken a bit of a backwards step - after only waking once the other night, he's now back to 2 - 3 times - cheeky thing... but he's doing better at his daytime naps - going down awake and without too much of a protest! He also gets v. upset if he hasn't pooed - not sure what to do to get him to poo every day - I'm massaging him now every day, and I thought the gripe water was helping with this, but he's back to pooing only once every 2 - 3 days...

Ah well - 1 step forward 3 steps back...! The good news is that now he's going down at 7pm, dp and I can escape in the evenings!! This week I'm going to the pictures with my Mum, and on Friday dp and I are going evening shopping (with grandma babysitting of course!). Feels like a million years since we've been able to go out without the kids - can't wait..!!!

bea · 04/06/2004 23:48

Hi Mrs D... just been talking to Dot1 onthe phone and she steered me in this direction as she said that you were asking about cloth nappies... well!!! there is so much to say, so many nappies out there, so many preferences etc etc! so i'm copying and pasting a little info that i sent to a friend which details some websites which i think are useful if you're a beginner into the world of clothdom! So much depends on your preferences, lifestyle, budget, etc etc... you can also ask lots of questions on the New Nappy Topic here on mumsnet but i hope the blurb below gives you a little nudge towards the wonderful world of clothies!!! - there's nothing nicer than seeing a lovely washing line full of nappies flapping in the wind!... yes! i know i am very very sad!!!... but believe you me there are worse fanatics out there!... also i found it's a lot about trial and error... what suits me (Fuzzis!) might not suit you... so good luck! and have fun trawling through these websites!!!

Cloth Nappy Websites!

The Nappy Lady

THE starting place for everyone who has ventured into the murky waters of cloth nappydom! Morag and her team of advisers will happily provide you with loads of advice. There is an Advice section where you can fill in a questionnaire (how old baby, how heavy? Have you got tumble drier? Is partner supportive? Is baby going to nursery? etc etc) and she replies with a tailor made factsheet. She?s the most sensible and impartial out of all the nappy sellers and is the sane face of cloth nappies!

Twinkle On The Web
Online Cloth nappy shop, seems to be the most popular place to buy your nappies, Miranda (who runs the site) will give you lots of advice over the phone if needed!

The Buzzness
My favourite place as this is where I get all my Fuzzis from. (p+p is free!)

Naturebotts
This is where you can buy my favourite eco-friendly Moltex Disposable Nappies. The cheapest on the web, very quick delivery (usually the next day!), also lots of other ?earth friendly? products

UKP Cloth Nappy Forum
The UK Parents Cloth Nappy forum is MAD! Here there are loads of really mad nappyholics! You can get a lot of good advice too and also it?s quite funny as I thought I was mad about my nappies but I am nothing compared to these addicts!

UKP Cloth Nappy Buy and Sell
The buy and sell nappy forum is brilliant for selling nappies that you?ve tried and decided not to go with? or you can buy all sorts of different nappies to try and sell them on?

Ella's House
This is a website that sells nappies made in Scotland, they have lovely nappies made out of hemp which are super absorbent and very slim fitting, plus, you can get some with lovely prints on!!! (if I were using the two part system (nappy and wrap) I would have used Ellas House Hemp Nappies! ? just sold my stock of these nappies on the UKP buy and sell board!))

Elinor's Nappies
This is a website of a Mum who has used a LOT of cloth nappies for her daughter Elinor, she has some good opinions based on usage of all the different nappies you can get!... Plus her links page has got loads and loads of Nappy based website that you can peruse at your own leisure!

The Cloth Resource
Finally, this does exatcly what it says on the tin!?A Cloth Resource!? it provides you with pictures and summaries of what all the different types of nappies you can get, it has a very comprehensive list and the biggest index I?ve seen so far! Plus it includes pictures and links!

I have to admit i'm not an expert on nappies... i'm sure there are mums on mumsnet who know of and have had experience of a lot more nappies... so just have a good look around and have fun!... but don;t get too hooked!!!

bea · 04/06/2004 23:51

wow! look at all those links... am very pleased with myself that i managed to do them!!!... hope they all work!
