I was about 8 or 9 and my mother asked for something for the house as a Christmas present.

I hoofed it to Woolys after school, and proudly bought her a shiny new.........

......dustpan and brush

I remember my uncle practically pissing himself when my mum opened it on Christmas day.

Blush

Please tell me I'm not the only one.

Yes, Rhubarb.

I'm now going to polish my halo at continuing to wear the 3 sizes too big top my DS chose for Mother's day, with love.

Flowers to all the little people and their carefully chosen presents.

A homemade scarf for my mum. Made from the cut- off hem of my granny's dressing gown, which was mint green fluffy polyester. (a colour my mum hated). I 'improved' it by gluing silver sequins to the fluffy side.

Frater - completely off topic but you've reminded me of when I cut a hankerchief sized piece of material from the back of one of my dm's dresses - I wanted to make a dolls dress and didn't think dm would notice Grin Blush

DXBMermaid · 25/09/2014 13:52

A bottle of old spice for my Dad when I was about 7. It stank...

A loony tunes tie with a tazmanian devil on it. Not the kind of thing he could wear to work Grin

My brother once bought my Mum a pencil and a rubber for Mothersday. It was so appaled at his tightfistedness!

WookieCookiee · 25/09/2014 14:25

I love these. There are some very special gifts in this thread.

My poor DMum has been the lucky recipient of many a shite present over the years - usually novelty kitchen crap like square egg makers. She also mentioned she liked owls once and now has enough little owl figurines to start a gift shop.

I got my DB (who is in the forces) a second- or possibly thirdhand book about flying between the wars from the charity shop one year quite recently Blush , together with some rather fetching VW camper van handwarmers.
In my defence I find him tricky to buy for and get a bit panicked in th erun up to Christmas! Sorry DBro!

Still vlad bet it was a lighter read than the Andropov files......

popcornpaws · 25/09/2014 14:51

A steering wheel for my dad from a jumble sale, i still cringe when i think about it!

KiteyDelighty · 25/09/2014 14:51

Aged 7 on Brownie camp, I bought a small bottle of violet perfume for my mum. Wrapped it carefully. I was SO disappointed the box was empty! the shopkeeper must have realised from the weight of it.

hagarthorne · 26/09/2014 16:18

DS bought me all the rubbish from preschool specially requested and packed into carrier bags because he knew I liked throwing things away.

BuggerLumpsAnnoyed · 26/09/2014 16:36

I mixed all my mothers (very expensive) perfumes together in a tupperwear with some flowers and water, wrapped it in a ribbon and there you have it, home made perfume (with a plastic spoon for application, obviously)

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 26/09/2014 18:01

A bottle of brown sauce

AnyoneForTARDIS · 26/09/2014 18:37

my first xmas prssies I ever bought my folks were:

fanfare- a box of cheeselets for mum!

a packets of cigarettes for dad! (and shop served cigs to me even though I was 8 years old!)

FishWithABicycle · 26/09/2014 18:57

When I was a massively self-centred teenager I failed to remember it was about to be my dad's birthday until after 8pm the night before. The only shop within reach still open was a petrol station.

I got him a PC magazine, on the grounds he likes computers, and a bar of chocolate.

I feel very guilty.

pippibuzzmarten · 26/09/2014 19:17

Not a present, but when my mum asked me (aged appx 6) what design of birthday cake we should make for dad, who at that time smoked a pipe, I thought long and hard about something he loved and would like to see on a cake, and decided a box of Swan Vestas matches would be perfect :-) And indeed, mum and I did a brilliant matchbox design cake for him.

AlpacaPicnic · 26/09/2014 19:26

The first Christmas gift I ever bought my mum was the first part of one of those 'learn how to knit' magazines. It came with a binder to keep the rest of the magazines in.
She was thrilled! She was also a very good knitter already...

DH when he was little bought his mum a set of lovely earrings. That were big dangly silver bats. She was equally thrilled! She wears them regularly... Every Halloween!

Valsoldknickers · 26/09/2014 20:11

Grin at disposable pants and the diary with Percy Sugden on the cover!

My very lucky DM was also the lucky recipient of a bar of Fry's Turkish Delight and an egg slicer (I liked it and bought it for her because I could strum it like a little guitar / banjo).

sonsmum · 26/09/2014 20:19

i once got my mum a time of condensed milk, since she has said how she loved it as a child (think she had meant licking out the tin, not eating the whole tin) !

threestars · 26/09/2014 20:24

a washing up brush Blush. Well, she shouldn't have mentioned she needed a new one during the week before her birthday... I thought I was being very generous and helpful.
To add to the fabulous birthday presents, there was a cheese grater - one that turns round and round with a handle, a ginger cat teapot (even though nobody in the family used a teapot), novelty oven gloves, and loads of silver brooches.
Grin at egg slicer/banjo!

Purplehonesty · 26/09/2014 20:39

I'm afraid to say that I also bought my mum some lilets from a caravan site toilets. I thought they were chocolates and borrowed the 20p from her to buy them!
Other lovely items have included some clown pyjamas - warm ones for caravanning, several china ducks and rabbits, coasters and salt and peppers sets. Oh dear poor mum!

stubbornstains · 26/09/2014 21:27

DS bought me all the rubbish from preschool specially requested and packed into carrier bags because he knew I liked throwing things away.

OK, I'm crying now. At that and the live crab....

DM's birthday is on Hallowe'en, and she likes to make a bit of a hoo-ha about being a "witch" (she isn't), and all things Hallowe'en-y. So you'd have thought an enormous plastic spider would be just the ticket, wouldn't you? Apparently not...Grin

stubbornstains · 26/09/2014 21:28

By the way, nothing wrong with slug pellets. I specifically requested slug pellets from my auntie the Christmas before last.

Iloveadrianmole · 26/09/2014 21:45

A bright red and green wickerwork chicken......

Overthehillmum · 26/09/2014 21:53

48 piece matching dinner set, i was 16, my mother moaned that she had no matching plates, this was a perfect present, she fell out with me, but used the set for the next 10 years. To be honest her presents were crap to me, I wanted a hornby train set from 5 years old to 15 years old, I got a bloody electric organ (I am tone deaf), a sewing kit ( I hate sewing), perfume (I was a tomboy), make up, and one of those stupid put make up on some plastic head, need I say more!! It was perhaps a silent protest over her presents, maybe!!!

CountSpatula · 26/09/2014 21:55

A birthday card from the in sympathy section.

Honknitted · 26/09/2014 22:28

I got my mum a 'mum' roll on deodorant in the 80s. I thought it was a great present as it said 'mum' on the bottle!
