Red and stinky neck

my 17 week old dd has got herself a red neck in the creases and if she gets really hot and sweaty her neck absolutely stinks! trying to get a drs appt is becoming near on impossible, so I took her to see the pharmacist who suggested a canesten cream which I have bought (clotrimazole) but I tried creams which made it look a lot more red and raw. The last few days I've bathed dd I have just dried the area and it doesn't seem so bad. any suggestions or help much appreciated

Is it milk getting in the folds of skin? Would explain the smell, old milk. Wash and dry carefully after every feed. Make sure is fully dry or could become infected

Same advice as heels.

It's just milk

Keep the area clean and dry and leave alone. If it's very sore use the cream . It'll clear up soon

You could also try putting on a thin layer of sudocreme after washing and drying. It helped my ds when he had the same.

This happens in their armpits too so make sure you check there as well

And behind the ears. I felt sooooooo bad when I realised I just hadn't noticed this happening!

Also heal

The best treatment I found was baby talc! Even when it was red raw and stank baby talc worked within a couple of days and kept it dry. Just make sure when you put it on that she doesn't breath any in!!

Sorry, health visitors rather than gps are good for this type of thing. You can get bibs which have a special roll at the neck to catch the milk and stop it going in the neck skin folds. Hope you manage to clear it up soon

Yep we had this from milk dribble. Washing alone made it worse as it was hard to get the neck folds completely dry afterwards so they got red and chapped. What worked for us was rubbing oil in the creases after washing - this seemed to allow it to heal without adding any harsh chemicals. You could use any mild oil (olive oil, coconut oil, almond oil, Vaseline, baby bottom butter).

So the tommee tippee bibs are worth getting? I feel awful as when we see friends I know they're looking but in not neglecting her one of our friends said her niece had it worse than our dd and it's really common which made me.feel a bit relieved. when will this stop happening?

Dd2 had this. I used to have to was a few times a day woth cool boiled water then towel dry them blow her neck dry whilst 'opening' the crease to endure it dried thoroughly. If it got really bad then a bit of vaseline helped it to heal slightly and as a barrier to more moisture.

It stopped happening when she was sitting up as the creases in her neck were a bit more open to the air then.

I would bring her to a chemist and ask should she be using Daktacort. I have it in my fridge for my baby for the very same thing. I was told to get it by his hospital paediatrician.

Daktacort is only effective for fungal infections so needs a diagnosis. Unlikely a pharmacist would be prepared to make the call.

I took her to see a pharmacist yesterday and she suggested canesten which I have been applying since this morning. Shall definitely get some bibs though thay will help soak up excess dribble and milk.

Ah ok- Canestan is also an anti fungal so the pharmacist did make the call- wow.

My DD gets this. HV said to clean and dry the area then put on a little Vaseline to work as a barrier. We also use the tommee tipped bibs with the big roll, we find that the dribble bibs a good too because they sit quite close to the neck.

Don't worry, it's really common. I felt embarrassed at first about the cheesy smell but we just make a joke about it now...my little Camembert...ooo its like a mature cheddar today etc etc.

My daughter gets this too. It's like a cheesy smell, or nob cheese as I'm reliably informed!
Tommee tippee bibs have been purchased and help a lot!! Difficult area to keep clean.

I was embarrassed when I finally found the depths of those folds in DDs neck and yes to some in her armpits too! I used to wash them out with cotton wool and water then dry thoroughly. If they got red a thin layer of Sudocreme helped.

It was behind the ears for us. Creases got milky and warm, skin red and peeling, was grim & stinky, ugh!

I don't think you need a special bib, muslin cloths will do the job just as well. My dd had this, I googled 'my baby stone's and was amazed at how many ppl had this problem!! Once I started catching the milk with a muslin it was much improved, and I also made sure I cleaned her neck after each feed. But it is possible your dds skin is infected too so definitely get her seen to exclude that.

The pharmacy will sell a powder made my daktarin. ....It has the same ingredient as the Caisten but in a powder for...

You don't need expensive bibs....just a muslin under chin at feed times....
Use a warm flannel to clean and throughly dry after each feed and it'll be gone in no time......x
