Sulphur dioxide preservative

I've just bought a pack of dried fruit snack bars for my 2.6 year old and in the list of ingredients is SULPHUR DIOXIDE. The fact it is in capital letters (amongst a whole heap of otherwise healthy ingredients) puts me off giving these to my DS. I only intended to give maybe 1 or 2 a week as an on-the-go snack. Does anyone have any info on this preservative and whether it's a big no-no for a LO his age please?

I avoid this preservative like the plague because it's known to cause tantrums in young children (and along with others is actually banned in foods marketed for them in some countries) - it is also found in dried fruit such as raisins, apricots etc. A lot of them are difficult to find and expensive without it (apricots are black) but I consider it worth it.

A quick Google brings up asthma attacks as one of the risks
