Can we start a mnet movement to ban party bags?

Back in the dark ages, when I was a girl, we sometimes got an extra piece of birthday cake in a paper napkin to take home.

When did this 'party bag' nonsense start? From what I can see most of it is (expensive) junk and, what offends me more, is that the guests look for it.

Am I an old skinflint/curmudgeon? No honest answers required.

FGS, most parents have already forked-out for the food and the makeover/clown/entertainer/ unicycling jugglers, as it is. Isn't that enough?

Blow your organic whistle with pride, Scummy.

I'm obviously in the minority here. And a jaded old Bubble I am too, by the sounds of it.

I just hate our 'throwaway culture' and no, I'm not a leftie, I have the dubious honour of being the first person ever (I think) to have been accused of holding fascist views on mnet.

Just hope your children are never invited to my childrens' parties......'Mummy, why did that lady give us an empty baked bean tin on a string?'

i do children's parties and they go home with the stuff they've made themselves.

'Thankyou for coming to the party?'

Good god, Strawb, why would you need to thank a child for coming to a morning/afternoon of games, fun and food?

And, BTW, shouldn't you be under canvas somewhere?

southeastastra - my ds doesn't have specific requirements, but the sweets in party bags is just too much for him with all the running around they do!

I agree though, the point that we really hate is the expectations of party bag.

not in this house - no sirrreeeeee

dya know why?

becuase i never have done a party bag.

is it becasue i is a lefty commie bastard?

errr no

is it becuase i have principles

errrmmm ummmm no

is it becuase i have been skint

yes!

is it because i am never entered ito this parental culture clap trap

yes yes yes

if you dont like it dont do it - shit - my kids didnt have birthday cake this year.

i dont bake
and £10 each for a shit one from tesco is shite. maybe not when your three, four, or even 10 - but at 13 its shite.

so we had jelly cake. with spray can cream.

becuase i would rather eat my arse than pay more than £30 for a cake thats not for their wedding.

its only you that perpetuates this shit.

Oh god - have just hesitantly booked an entertainer for the first time ever. Go on Sallystrawberry - hit me with the bad news.

ghosty · 29/08/2006 23:33

Ah, and there she is ... Custy ... shoots from the hip.
Brilliant

southeastastra · 29/08/2006 23:35

yes but you can't blame being skint for not being able to cut a cake up and put into napkins fo 10 kids

bubble99 · 29/08/2006 23:37

But Sal, the paper crowns or anything they make is lovely.

DS2 went to a party in an 'art cafe' and came back with a cardboard mirror thing he'd made. He still has it in his room, two years later. He's treasured that more than the party bag tat or Christmas stocking tat that he's been given for the last two years, for sure. None of that stuff survives a day, usually.

Oh heck, I don't know where I am now. Should I put party bags in to Room 101? Or just the crappy 'throwaway' stuff that goes into them, that parents have spent hard-earned money on?

Only scanned thread.........

Hooray for party bag banning!!! They can have their cake in a bit of tissue, a balloon, and that is all (gotta send cake home and stop it getting squished into carpet). (Says me who has so far not thrown a proper party ).

AND - I keep seeing Ghosty being congratulated on going back to Ghosty... what was she being before?

Pointydog - were you someone else?

bubble99 · 29/08/2006 23:44

Book Custy and a bottle of Tequila?

I do face paintin (Well, I bought some face paints and did one spiderman....)

tortoiseshell · 29/08/2006 23:48

I like party bags. Dd's party we put
little bracelet
satsuma
mini chocolate bar
Piece of birthday cake
Tub of bubbles
Balloon
and they loved them. For ds1's last party they were similar, except that they had a card game (Happy Families etc) instead of the bracelet.

Ds1 LOVES his party bags from parties he's been to, and some of the things have been played with endlessly. In fact, one party had a few pirate things - eye patch etc and he and dd have had DAYS of playing pirates as a result, even searching for treasure on woodland walks - well worth the party bag if you ask me!

But I do take the point about sweet filled bags - ds1 went to a party at a soft play, and the party bag had about 20 different packets of sweets and that was all! So I had to surreptitiously empty it, or he wouldn't have gone to bed for a week...

Flamesparrow · 29/08/2006 23:49

Oooh - I'm liking the sound of costume party bags - an eye patch and little plastic parrot maybe, or some wings and a wand??? Could be pricey though....

southeastastra · 29/08/2006 23:49

didn't you eat sweets ever when you were little?

TinyGang · 29/08/2006 23:51

I bet you're fantastic Sally.

The best entertainer I ever saw was a dad doing the honours at a party. My children think he's god whenever they see him out and about now and there's always hushed expectation waiting for his next trick, even if he's just passing by on his bike

Flamesparrow · 29/08/2006 23:52

Yup - we were allowed a big (seemed big to us anyway) bowlful on a sunday morning, and nothing during the week.

DD is whirlwind child WITHOUT sugar though, and with it I would be forced to find a nice padded room for one of us to hide in. If I didn't find it so hard to cope with her sugarred up, then I wouldn't have an issue with the odd batch of sweets.
