I want to get my daughter an ethnic baby born doll but I can't find one anywhere. Where would I get one?

IKEA have soft dolls that are ethnic. http://m.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/series/21132/ Pretty cute. TK Maxx have had them in the past too.

Depends on your budget Petalina has lots of nice dolls and you can search according to skin colour :)

AnneEyhtMeyer · 26/04/2014 22:05

Have you tried www.afrotoys.com/? They have a wide range of toys and the service is good.

ilovepowerhoop · 26/04/2014 22:09

this one is quite cute

mizzdanibaby89 · 26/04/2014 22:14

Thanks for all your replies. I think it's important for her to have dolls with different skin colour.. She is almost two but I want to teach her from a young age that all people are different shapes sizes and colours. Grin Thanks for the help everyone

Early learning centre did one years ago, would assume they still do now

MortaIWombat · 26/04/2014 23:19

Can I encourage you to get one of these too, op? It would go some way to normalising disability.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 26/04/2014 23:25

I applaud your sentiments, op, but think you might mean to ask where you can find dolls of varying ethnicities, rather than 'ethnic dolls'. We all have an ethnicity!

alex7149 · 27/04/2014 00:43

interesting no one questioned the ops word choice until it became apparent that she may be white British...
why do we need to be politically correct all the time? We knew what she meant and she is clearly not racist as she trying to instill good values regarding ethnicity for her children.

I agree that disabled dolls may be a nice idea too. I've seen a down syndrome one when working at men cap.

wigglesrock · 27/04/2014 00:52

Smyths have some great dolls. My dd has a few, they're actually hard bodied bath dolls - last time I bought them, they were £9.99 or 2 for £15 Grin

mizzdanibaby89 · 27/04/2014 02:15

I love the fact that you can get a doll that teaches about disabilities I'll certainly look into that.

I should have been more clear with ethnic status but it seems everyone understood what I ment Smile. Living in a multicultural country it's important that my daughter understands that everyone is different x

It was not because it 'became apparent'; I don't think anyone belonging to a minority ethnicity would describe themselves as 'ethnic'.

It does matter what you say and what words you use, and whilst, as I say, I applaud the sentiment, 'ethnic' isn't the right word, for very many reasons.

mizzdanibaby89 · 27/04/2014 13:31

It certainly wasn't a racist comment. I think we are being a little pernickety here....... And in the shops that's what the coloured dolls are called ethnic, we don't have to be so politically correct, if that's the case I'm sure there would be an uproar about how they label dolls etc in store. Anyway I have my aswer and I have found the one I want. Thanks for all your answers! Wink

Which one did you choose OP? :)

mizzdanibaby89 · 27/04/2014 19:05

I got her a stunning one from your recommendation! Petalina. The dolls are gorgeous! Thanks!!

Oh lovely, I have bought a couple of dolls from there, customer service is great :)

tethersend · 27/04/2014 19:26

TheOriginalSteamingNit, it's not just you.

I was agog when I saw black dolls on sale as Ethnic and actually called Toys R Us to query it- they were a bit politiclacorrectnessgawnmad and demanded to know what I thought they should be called... Err, how about "Dolls", like the white ones? Confused

Martorana · 27/04/2014 19:34

I'm "ethnic". I'm a blue eyed red haired Celt.

Martorana · 27/04/2014 19:34

Oops, sorry, late to the party.

tethersend · 28/04/2014 20:06

Don't apologise when you agree with me, Martorana Grin

mizzdanibaby89 · 29/04/2014 22:12

No matter how I worded it there's always people who will disagree.... It is a controversial subject!

OP posts:
TheOriginalSteamingNit · 29/04/2014 22:35

No, it's not a controversial subject. Calling people 'ethnic' when you mean their ethnicity is different from yours is just problematic.
