Really silly question here but what do you call your private parts to your children?

I don't know what to call a woman's bits to my child! Silly I know, I don't like what I was told to call it as a child so I wondered what other words I can use that are sort of decent to say not rude. Oh god I sound stupid don't I

This thread must come up at least once a week...

AnguaResurgam · 23/04/2014 18:17

Children need to know the proper names.

But it is handy to have day to day term too (as that current child protection advert says 'it doesn't matter what you call it'). For boys it's invariably 'willy'. For girls, there is a vocabulary gap - no term is in universal use (probably a hangover from more repressive times).

BelleateSebastian · 23/04/2014 18:20

Don't ever call it your Vagina/Vag/Vajayjay ... the minge pedants will wipe the floor with you ;)

Well I will teach her the correct names when the time comes but a day to day name is what I am trying to think of as you say. No way will it be vaj or whatever else pp listed!
Sorry if this has been done before, maybe I google it and see what MN threads come up.

My boys know that women have a vulva (what you can see) and a vagina (where baby comes out) but I can honestly say I've never really been in a situation where I've needed to talk to then about mine or where they've talked about it particularly

They know the correct term is penis as well but normally use willy

VikingLady · 23/04/2014 18:44

We spent ages discussing what we should call it, had pretty much decided on vulva, then heard myself automatically referring to DD's front bottom. Which is what my parents always called it.

Hate it, btw! But that's whatDD thinks it is called now!

CinnamonPlums · 23/04/2014 18:51

We call it a Frobo (short for front bottom)

Seems to work well.

We've never called it vulva or vag or anything. I don't call it a penis and testicles, I call it a willy/todger and balls/nads.

When they need a biology lesson they will get one, until then it's Frobo.

PrincessBabyCat · 23/04/2014 19:27

When I was a kid I just called them penis and vagina, and their day to day names were just private parts, which is pretty universal for both genders. My daughter will be doing the same. :)

VikingVolva · 23/04/2014 19:33

I'd have assumed Frobo was a lisping hobbit (sorry!)

Chocoholism · 23/04/2014 19:42

Hahahahaha frobo the lisping hobbit

We do twinkle and winkle, just because they sound nice and rhyme!

GingerDoodle · 23/04/2014 20:45

My DD is 19 months old and I use the term 'mummy's bits' if she accidentally prods / kicks / jumps on my parts. When she is old enough the proper terms will be more appropriate but I don't see anything wrong with using the term bits / privates.

hugebagsisanunderstatement · 23/04/2014 21:20

My little girl calls hers her foo foo., somethin that stuck when she first could talk. N my little boy knows his as his bobby.

wheresthelight · 23/04/2014 22:20

I have same quandary with my step kids!! Dsd has toiletissues and ffrequent water infections that have hospitalised her so we have to keep reminding her to wipe and wash properly. At the moment I refer to it as her "lady bits" - i am not mum so not my place to educate on the actual names and purposes and dp has been asked told to stay out of it by exw when he asked what he should use when discussing.

Sorry it probably doesn't help you much but if you want a generic inoffensive term it would probably work or maybe girly bits depending on her age

notadoctor · 24/04/2014 00:48

We have a 2.5yr old daughter and we refer to it as 'girlie bits'. She's currently obsessed because she has a new baby brother so we get a lot of 'girls have girlie bits like me, boys have boy bits like baby brother'. Also tonight when she was role playing in the bath I overhead 'I've got sore girly bits because baby's not in my belly anymore'!

RedSpringer · 24/04/2014 01:05

Fairy & winky... Very twee but that's what they were called in our house when I was a kid so it's just stuck with me. When talking to my friends I call it a mimsy, no idea why. If I hear people refer to it as Front bottom or fanny, it makes me gag ConfusedConfused

Melonbreath · 24/04/2014 09:37

Twinkle and winkle here too. Sometimes they are just bits

PollyIndia · 24/04/2014 12:05

I say penis but also chin chin, which is a generic word for both boy and girl bits in japanese. My niece is half japanese so she calls it her chin chin and when she saw DS's penis, she said he had a different chin chin and it just stuck.

CoffeeChocolateWine · 24/04/2014 12:15

We say 'lady bits' and 'winky' or just 'privates' for now. My DS is 5 and he does know the correct name for his bits (although not for a lady's I don't think) but he still prefers winky. My DD is almost 2 so haven't taught her the correct names yet. We will though.

MuddledColours · 24/04/2014 12:25

my dd(5) calls it her peepee place. she called it that herself when potty training so it stuck.

unintentionalthreadkiller · 24/04/2014 13:37

My daughters call their bits their woof. Heaven knows where it came from but it seems to have stuck. They're only 2.8 an we will be teaching them the relevant anatomically correct names but for now woof seems to do the job. Highly embarrassing though getting changed at swimming to a chorus of 'I can see your woof mummy'...

BlanketSky · 24/04/2014 13:45

we have just introduced the word vulva to DS (3), but mainly because I am 38 weeks pg expecting his sister, and he has just been given an anatomically correct newborn girl doll. Before this he'd never asked what it was called, in his eyes boys/daddies have willies and balls and girls/mummies do not!

Mylittlepetdonkey · 24/04/2014 13:49

Not again please.
Cal it whatever you like.

Hth.

MirandaWest · 24/04/2014 13:50

I use the word bits for DD and me and willy for DS.

Angloamerican · 25/04/2014 13:50

Vulva and penis.

As a child safety issue, I don't think it's helpful if children don't use the correct terms. Contrast the response to "the boy next door asked to see my flower/twinkle/insert twee nonsensical name as appropriate" with "the boy next door asked to see my vulva."
