Does anyone know if I can clear it myself or will we need a plumber? It's just filling up too much when you flush it, and then not all the water drains away. Thought of various reasons, then realised we have been getting different liners lately as have cancelled our nappy laundry service - and looking at the packet, the Boots disposable nappy liners are NOT flushable WTF is the point of that?

def plumber now!

FrannyandZooey · 07/08/2006 20:41

It is full of water, we can't see the drain to blast it. Dp stuck a stick in it but couldn't get it very far, he is off to B + Q now to get drain rods.

What a ruddy disaster, it was idiotic of me not to check they were biodegradable

Probably too late now but I would never put anything apart from toilet paper in the toilet, regardless of what it says on the packet....

What part of the country are you in F&Z? In the Thames Water area if you let on you think the blockage is in the public sewer they will come out and if it is actually in you private drain after all they will charge to clear it but are a lot cheaper than AAACon man in the phone book (or at least they used to be....)

Hate to tell you but if your dh can face shovelling what is blocking the drain via a bucket and spade into the next drain down he can probably manage without the rods. Horrible job I know. Then he can get near enough to use the hose. It sounds like the rods are going to get impaled in stuff rather than finding the actual drain....[gagging emoticon]
I paid £200 to two noble men with hig tech equipment who spent 4 hours sorting mine out. It was the hottest day last year and the drain goes round a corner at that point so it was awful awful
I get so cross now with anyone flushing anything that isn't man made if you know what I mean... [ more gagging emoticons] I wouldn't wish this on anybody.. well perhaps nobody iyswim
Good luck

FrannyandZooey · 07/08/2006 20:56

I have learnt a little lesson

I truly believe the degradable liners are fine - we used them for nearly 3 years with nary a problem. 4 weeks of these new ones and it's all gone tits up.

I don't think he can handle a bucket and spade, really. He is big and hard but that it just asking a bit much of a man, isn't it?

Returning soon with Big Rods, anyway. It has made the evening pass quickly if nothing else

it won't help you now, but we have drains insurance for about 60 quid a year from thames water. this was after a couple of very expensive encounters plumbers had to have with our georgian drains....

southeastastra · 07/08/2006 21:07

it could be blocked up with something else though. if the drains run through it may be someone else 'down the line'.

FrannyandZooey · 07/08/2006 21:09

I bet it is me and my wicked evil liner flushing

am racked with guilt

and penury

Once it is all sorted Franny, ring your enviromental health and get them to come and check it is now ok and if they think it is a shared drain and someone up the line could be repsonsible they should do a dye test to find out. Mine did it for free. Tell them you have young kids and they should come straight away..

FrannyandZooey · 07/08/2006 21:15

He is out there in the dark with 15 foot of rod

I feel strangely impressed and moved by this

justamum · 07/08/2006 22:28

don't feel too guilty about nappy liners, the bloke from 3 doors away has just been round because their drains backed up as some nutter neighbour of mine has been putting; nappies/sausages/apples/meatballs/condoms (so not us, we have a 4mnth old-just not relevant atm) fish bones and various other unspeakable things down toilet and they have had to rod it all out-yuck! They thought it was us because of nappies! I told them about my incident & I think I convinced them that I am not a mad sausage flushing loon. good luck with night time rodding adventure (that sounds a bit rude)

Nope

we have friends with 40 ft rods so may go off there later today, however I think dp is losing the will to live

We are lucky to have two toilets so can hopefully afford to wait and see a little bit. Is there any chance it will just clear by itself?

and I don't know what sort of rods they are, but can enquire...

Yes I am getting the idea you are the woman to speak to about blockages of shit.

Any update FAZ? Am strangely intrigued!
Surely your second toilet will be emptying into the same drain tho and 'backing up'????
I once had to rod a drain at work and found it quite satisfying once it got going again - kids flushed paper towels down the loo.
These Boots liners sound crap. I have inherited about 10 rolls of Cotton Bottoms ones but wash wee ones anyway so have enough for 10 years!!

The other toilet is out the back of the house, does that make a difference? I have not noticed any problems upstairs so far (problematic toilet is the downstairs one).

There will be no updates until tonight or more likely tomorrow when dp drives over to get the rods. He really wants to get a plumber in but I said pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeease for the sake of £120 can you try again pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease and he says he will.

I think we are stuffed though, the drain is awash still today, I think it is good and bunged and ALL MY FAULT

OP posts:
99redballoons · 08/08/2006 12:32

No drain advice, but as far as scraping off the liners.. use a few sheets of toilet roll and scrape/pick it off into the loo or 'waggle' the liner in the water and the poo should float off. Liner in bin, loo roll down the toilet. Def agree with Capaccino, fleece is the best! HTH.

FrannyandZooey · 08/08/2006 12:52

Yes I seem to have been changing pooey nappies for most of my adult life now (actually, that's because I have), so anything that limits the contact between me and the poo is looked on favourably in this house. Hence: laundry service, flushable liners, etc. Ho hum.

We had a problem with our drains once - noticed when the shower water would cover the garden and not drain away - so wasn't the toilet.

Anyway, dh and his dad got the cover up in the garden (what cover I have no idea) and shovelled loads of crap (probably literally) and sorted it out.

Me? I was inside with the windows shut using dd1 as an excuse "I would help you both with this but >".

Please update, this thread is quite funny (although not for you)
