Does anyone know if I can clear it myself or will we need a plumber? It's just filling up too much when you flush it, and then not all the water drains away. Thought of various reasons, then realised we have been getting different liners lately as have cancelled our nappy laundry service - and looking at the packet, the Boots disposable nappy liners are NOT flushable WTF is the point of that?

think it cost about £120?

FrannyandZooey · 07/08/2006 12:50

Oh ffs £120

How much is a plunger?

I blame ds, he potty trained, we cancelled the nappy service, then he decided that actually he was only going to poo in a nappy after all, and I got these pathetic unflushable wipes

Use a mop. It acts like a plunger, and doesn't cost £120. Had to do this last week, after finding out via backed up toilet that DP had been flushing those bathroom cleaner wipe thingies.

Cappucino · 07/08/2006 13:04

actually thinking back, ours was much worse as there was sewage in next door's cellar

[ewww emoticon]

JennT · 07/08/2006 13:15

Yeah, my boots have just stopped selling cotton bottoms liners. Luckily did notice they weren't flushable.... pain in a**e to order on internet.

Cappucino · 07/08/2006 13:18

fleece! fleece!

EvesMama · 07/08/2006 13:19

have you triend 'plunging' it yourself yet?
and i think the term disposable means you can throw it away..not nessesarilly flush it down toilet?

gomez · 07/08/2006 13:27

Buy a 'Power Plumber' from B & Q or somewhere similar, costs around a tenner. You basically stick it in the toilet when it is full of water and blast the blockage away. Has worked for us twice now - small downstairs loo very prone to blocking due to obscene amounts of loo roll small girls use to wipe their bits.

Good luck

FrannyandZooey · 07/08/2006 13:29

No EvesMama I have been brave enough for one day. Dp has been given his orders for this evening

It is probably not as bad as it sounds, it is still working, just that the water does that sickening thing where it rises up much too far and you think aaaaaaaaaargh it's going to......ah phew

Yes I don't normally try to put things in the toilet just because they are disposable, honest. However as these are designed to catch poo so that you can flush it down the toilet, and as the poo is smeared all over the liner when I need to flush it, I did sort of expect that it would be possible to flush the liner away at the same time, not scrape it off with a ruddy knife or something

as indeed you can with sensible liners, just not these ones

I realised after a while that our liners weren't flushable either, or maybe they were, but they were still causing problems. What didn't help was that we deal with all our dirty nappies in the evening (store the whole days worth up), so we were flushing several at a time. Once we stopped, the toilet went back to normal after a couple of days, so there is hope at the end of the U-bend!

Now I 'flick' off whatever poo wants to come off easily, and the rest goes in the bin. We use the Little Green Earthlets Ultra Biodegradable ones. Expensive IMO but fantastic for newborn poo!

Get a plunger - £2.50 from DIY shop. We did this recently with liners that were flushable but had somehow blocked up the toilet. Took less than a minute to clear .

justamum · 07/08/2006 16:39

i flushed those and ended up with raw sewage all over patio & £150 plumbers bill!! try everything

JennT · 07/08/2006 16:43

Just read the packet of the offending liners....They suggest you sanitise them with your nappies before you chuck them out ha ha ha

FrannyandZooey · 07/08/2006 19:57

DP has just headed for the toilet with a great big plunger in his hand

he looked quite manly and attractive, I must say

Cappucino · 07/08/2006 19:58

FrannyandZooey · 07/08/2006 20:00

As he is plunging, should stuff be coming out of the toilet? I mean will the blockage reappear at our end or will it be forced further down the drains?

Ok dp now says he reckons the drain directly outside the house is blocked. Friend has rods - how do we get the drain cover up? I'm talking about the one on our property by the way, not one in the street

OP posts:
southeastastra · 07/08/2006 20:14

hasn't it got any handles on it? you could use a crowbar if you have one, sounds yuk. ours got blocked a while back

FrannyandZooey · 07/08/2006 20:18

Erm, no crowbar, dp is trying with a coat hanger

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 07/08/2006 20:24

Ooooh he has got the cover up and it does not look good

Drain full of water - what now???

OP posts:
robinpud · 07/08/2006 20:31

you can try blasting it through with your hose. Get it angled into the drain and use power! If you can open another drain further along you can see if stuff begins to clear. Definitely mans work tho'!!
nothing except loo roll is flushable.. trust me.
Is it a shared drain.. we had a similar situation last year and both neighbours had been using flushable wipes which as Enviromnental health pointed out, do not flush. THey all coughed up- it wasn't really our problem at all despite being on our land!
