towels on changing mats?

I don´t put a towel on my mat and have never thought about it but realised that all the other people I know with small babies and children put little towels to cover the changing mats

Am I being manky?

To me I have a wipe clean mat that gets tidied up with wipes after any spills, surely more hygienic than poo over towels? and if there is a wee accident the mat gets wet anyway??

Er, no, that has never occurred to me. Why would you cover the wipe clean surface?

I do because if they wee on the mat it gets everywhere, often covering their clothes etc. But the towel soaks it up! I just use old towels.

Most of the time I have a folded muslin under baby's bum area on our wipe clean mat. I don't lower her bum onto it until it has been wiped though. I just have it for sudden wees so they don't go into the changing table or soak into her outfit.

We have a muslin on our changing mat. I just thought it might stop my little chap getting cold when he lay on it.

never - if he weed on it which after a few months he stopped doing i just cleaned the changing mat

I've always had a cover on the mat as it's cold and I wouldn't like to lie on it in the winter!

We had a soft towelling covered changing mat Absoultely loved it. We just used to put a piece of kitchen towel underneath when we changed. So yes I think a towel is fine.

I have some muslin sheets which were a bit too tough to use on babies skin (sainsburys brand) so I'll lie one under him if the mat feels cold. Other than that I just wipe the bare mat down with an antibacterial wipe. Seems less hassle than a million towels!

I change them on my knee.
My daughter swore that she would never do this.......guess what?

I have a towel on ours, as DS2 wriggles and flips over if the mat's cold! Change it very couple of days, or more if it gets messed on

I used muslins on changing mats. I figured the plastic on the mat was cold and uncomfortable for baby. It soaked up leaks, and I would anyway clean the mat after.

I put a towel on otherwise the wee runs off and makes an even bigger mess!!!

I put a flannel under her bum just in case she wees even now (nearly 11mo) - then I use the flannel to pat her bum dry. I find that if her bum is damp from the wipes she gets a bit of redness.
Anyway I wouldn't want to put my wet bum in pants...

It's not for cleanliness, but for warmth. Those wipe clean changing mats can be a chilly prospect for a wee bare bum.
I used to chuck a towel over mine - my babies were all winter babies.

I used to - the HV told me to because the mat would be cold otherwise.

I had a stash of terry towelling square nappies for this. Cost nothing per use as I brought a pack of 15 for dc1 and still used them for dc4. They are now with my cousin for her first dc.

JUst lie them over the mat, especially after bath time. they are good as muslins as well, as more absorbant!

I put a muslin on the change mat for DSs comfort. The plastic is cold on their skin and especially as a newborn would make them cry.

I never did. DS and DD appear to have emerged unscathed.

I used my old towels for the 1st two months. It was also handy incase LO did a wee whilst changing, which happened alot back then

We have the IKEA changing mat which comes with a removable elasticated towelling cover, it's brilliant as it's always warm and won't slip around unlike a separate muslin/towel.

if there is an accident there is not much wiping to be done as the cover mostly soaks it up, I just remove the cover and give the mat a quick wipe if it's soaked through and put a new cover on (they come in packs of 2).

I thoroughly recommend them! the sides of the mat are inflatable and it folds in half so doesn't take up much space either.

I never did! DD appeared not to mind or notice. But then she was unbothered by a lot of stuff (happy to have cold wipes, cold water, didn't mind or appear to notice her nappy being dirty, etc.)
