towels on changing mats?

I don´t put a towel on my mat and have never thought about it but realised that all the other people I know with small babies and children put little towels to cover the changing mats

Am I being manky?

To me I have a wipe clean mat that gets tidied up with wipes after any spills, surely more hygienic than poo over towels? and if there is a wee accident the mat gets wet anyway??

I didn't with DD but with the DS's I use these changing mats. They are the best changing mats ever.
I have three, one on the wash, one in use at home and one in the changing bag. They fold up really small, soak up wee, are warm on the skin. You can use them to dry wet slides or put on wet benches when out and about.

A towel on a changing mat is just one more thing to end up having to clean.

Our first ever changing mat had one on. I threw the towel away within a week. More useful to just use a washable muslin cloth that you can wipe up any big wees with, before they spill over, but don't lay baby on it.

And we just kept the mat under the TV cabinet, which was always nice and warm!

We only aver put a towel on the mat at night in the winter, as we found that the cold mat woke the baby if we had to change their nappy.

Though with dd there was a phase of a few months when she peed during most nappy changes, so we used to put a folded muslin down to catch the wee before it ran up the mat and soaked her clothes.

mousmous · 17/01/2014 13:47

I did.
started mainly because dc1 would pee as soon as he was in contact with the cold(ish) surface of the plastic.
towels helped with that, also they are easy to wash if needed.

and what the others say about soaking up the pees and poonamis.

I used to use one of those pampers baby mats on top of the changing mat as the mat is cold on its own. If it didnt get messy I would reuse it the next time.

ilovepowerhoop · 17/01/2014 13:48

pampers change mats - these are what I used

starfishmummy · 17/01/2014 13:58

But surely in a heated house a changing mat isn't going to get that cold? Never seemed to bother ds.

DrivingToDistraction · 17/01/2014 14:13

I feel like how cold can a changing mat get? But if I have a towel hanging around (I tend to hang lightly-used ones in the same room as the changing mat) I stick it on there until it gets peed on. But to be honest, the kid's lucky I made it to the changing table and didn't just do the change on the floor.

We used to use cheap hand towels from Poundland. Plastic changing mat was always a bit cold and YY to soaking up any wees. Any dirty ones got put in the covered bucket with the napisan and washed with any soiled clothes.

We have an old towel or muslin for comfort against the cold plastic. Also we use it for drying his bum when changing as we wash him with a sponge and water rather than use wet wipes. Your washing lots anyway so an extra little towel or two makes no difference.

CrispyCrochet · 18/01/2014 17:04

I'm with ilovepower might seem a bit wasteful but I only throw them out if they actually get soiled - in 6 weeks I've only gone through 1 pack and a couple from the second.

delasi · 19/01/2014 16:26

We've never had a changing mat... we just use our old towels Smile Seems to have worked fine thus far (DS 13mo).

UniS · 19/01/2014 22:10

Have you never had a baby wee all over the mat and their clothes as the wipe clean mat funnels the wee back towards the child’s head....

MostWicked · 19/01/2014 22:18

I used a muslin with my eldest because he peed every time I too his nappy off. Didn't need it with my youngest.

MissRatty · 20/01/2014 05:41

We do, just because the cold freaks out LO and he screams otherwise. Plus it stops wee reaching his clothes if he goes mid change as it soaks it up and we can cover his winky with it.

Ikea has girst towels for 20p each which we use...slightly cheaper than mothercare's two for £8!

MissRatty · 20/01/2014 05:41

Guest...not girst!
