What age to have ears pierced?

DD has been asking for her ears to be pierced. She has just turned 9 years old.

She has been asking for years but I have continually said no because I wasn't allowed to have mine done until I was nearly 12 years old

Opinions please...

When they are old enough to look after and clean them themselves, to understand that it hurts and to pay for them themselves.

oh no, aren't there enough arguements at the moment? I really have no idea Wangle, I have not had to face this yet, 9 sounds okay to me though

wrangle - exactly the same as you dd had asked for years - let her do it last yr she was 9. Have regretted it a little bit - had one infection that was hard to get rid of - dr said he thought she might have to give up. We have 11 odd earings upstairs and only one pair!!!
DD doesnt' see that fussed now she has them. hang on I"ll ask her - says shes really glad she had it done

Personally i wouldnt want to allow my own children to have their ears pierced until mid teens...

I dont 'believe' in piercings or tattoos... and dont have any myself.

Im just greatful that my mother never mutilated my body for me.... i certainly will NOT be doing it to my children..

saw a little baby having hers done the other day... she was SCREAMING hysterically.... juts having had one ear done and about to have the other.... WHY do people do it to babies?

I say 12/13 (but won't be drawn on it by the kids so I have the option of changing my mind to a later time)

dd2 kind of mentions it in passing in a kind of "I know you won't let me but can I" way (she is 7); dd1 is more of a tomboy so just says "yuck" to the whole thing

Dd's school don't allow earrings at all so there's no point in having them done so dd doesn't ask I was about 10 yo and would be fine with dd having them done for secondary school if she really wants to.

My sister was worn down by her dd round about 10 - sounds about right to me.

My mum wouldn't let me until I was 16 but relented at 15!!! My dd hasn't asked, she's 7, and they're not allowed them at school anyway so there's her answer! I think when you start secondary school is ideal then it's a kind of growing up thing and a milestone, if you're looking for a reason.

My mum wouldn't let me until I was 16 either. All my friends had it done and everyone would give each other earings for their birthdays, something I couldn't join in with.
By the time I was 16 I wasn't interested anymore and so have never had it done, but even though it's not for me, I agree with KBear that starting secondary school would be a nice time to do it.
(BTW my mum then had to give in with my younger sisters, because middle sister just went and had it done without permission, and so when youngest sister asked, she was allowed at age 10 or something. (I don't think either of them wear earings anymore))

hollyhobbie, I used to say to my mates "ooh, no, couldn't get my ears pierced, couldn't BEAR it" when I really meant "my mum is a meany and won't let me".

I was 12 too when I was allowed to have them done. I think going up to secondary school is a good milstone to mark actually, with something like this if she is still very keen. It's like marking a rite of passage, she is growing up and going to secondary and on the way to becoming a teenager rather than young child....

I'd stick out for 11/12 myself.

i was 12, got infected so got them removed. tried again at 13 and had a reac tion to the studs, so again removed them. then at 15 i got two hioles in each ear at once. had stainless steel studs instead of thr gaudy gold ones they had used before, and no problems. but i do have a visable scar from the 2nd lot so looks like i have 3 holes in my ears.

My plan was to wait till my DD was 16 yrs. However she was the last in her class to have her ears pierced and I relented because she was going to be bridesmaid at my friends wedding (and wanted to wear earrings). She had then done a couple of months before her 8th birthday. They were both done at the same time and she cried for about 2 mins then was delighted. She has always looked after them very well and never got any infections. She is now 12.

My Mum made me wait until I was 16 and got hers pierced for the first time with me, she told my sister she had to wait until 16 as well but my sister changed her mind and didn't get them done until a few weeks ago aged 19.

If I had a girl then I think I would just refuse to let her have them done, the age at which parents let their daughters have their ears pierced keeps dropping before we know it little girls will be wandering around with their tummy buttons pierced and we will be discussing the best age to have that done. Yuck.

I had mine done at 8 and was able to look after them myself, although one got pulled out when I had a roller skating accident and I had to have it re-pierced.
I am thinking either 13 for DD or when she starts her periods - sort of coming of age gift.
She is 4.5 and hasn't shown any interest in them anyway.
I barely wear earrings so she doesn't see me and think - oooh I want them!

I'm not keen on seeing babies have it done - I know in some cultures it's traditional, but if it's not done for those reasons I think it's just the vanity of the parents. Personally, I think the child needs to be old enough to understand the pain, and to understand they need to look after their piercings. I let my dd1 have hers done on the last week of term when she left primary school - it was a way of rewarding her good work there, and marked a transition to the big world of secondary school.

I had mine pierced when I was 8 so I had to hide some old photos!! I don't think dd1 was ready for it at that age, but we are very different personalities - I don't remember asking my mum, I think she just asked if I'd like it which made me the envy of my friends back then!!!

i had mine done at the age of 6.

my older cousins had had theirs done and i wanted to be the same, my mum only said yes as she thought i would change my mind.

i didnt! im thirty now and still have the same holes!

I think I'll let my dd have hers done when she's 14+

I had mine done when I was 20. That was bad enough!! OH took me and said I went white & he was worried I'd scream.
