What age to have ears pierced?

DD has been asking for her ears to be pierced. She has just turned 9 years old.

She has been asking for years but I have continually said no because I wasn't allowed to have mine done until I was nearly 12 years old

Opinions please...

Just to add.. I think I would pay for her to have it done & buy her a few pairs of earrings to start her collection to ensure that she had some good quality earrings.

OHs sister had hers done a few months before me (she 's a few months younger so was also 20) and had the cheapest earrings available (don't know where she went though) and had several infections. I had some of the most expensive available in the jewellers I went to (only about £20) & tried to stick to white gold & decent silver for the first year & fingers crossed have had no problems with them so I think it's worth having decent earrings. Although I guess it all depends on the person.

I'd let her have them done, as long as you get her hypoallergenic earings and she doesn't have hoops don't see the problem. I had mine done at about that age. Most girls/women I know have them done at some point, so if she has continually asked for them and its not just a whim I would let her.

ds1 wants his ears pierced - I've told him 13 and hope by then he's going through a rough, tough adolescent phase..!

spugs · 16/07/2006 22:16

i wasnt alowed to get mine done till i was 16 - ended up retaliating at 15 and having them done numerous times. now dont bother wearing them at all. must say i cant stand the site of tiny tots with their ears done - chavtastic in my opinion, its fqairly popular in the north east along with fake burberry and oversized gold earings - minging

I must admit my DD had them done at nearly 6. It was her decision, she asked for them pierced for months and months and I explained that it would hurt and that they would have to be bathed and kept clean. We decided to let her have the donw just as she broke up for the long summer holidays so there would be no taking in and out for school etc. She insisted that she wanted them doing so I took her to our local Claires Accessories and asked the lady to explain fully what was going to happen. DD suddenly got a case of the jitters and backed out after the lady had opened the sterile 9ct gold earrings which should have cost us £26. Anyway the lady as really nice and said she would write the earrings off as being dropped on the floor so unusable. DD then decided that she DID want them doing after all so we went back in and she had them done. She accepted that it did sting a little but what they do with young girls is they have someone at each ear and they time it so both ears get pierced at the same time. She had no problems, infections etc, as I made sure they were kept scrupulously clean. She's 11 now though and very rarely wears her earrings unless she's going somewhere special. I just dont think she can be bothered tking them in and out, lazy thing

18th birthday minimum honestly why before?

Riddo · 25/07/2006 20:45

I'm taking dd to get it done tomorrow for her 12th birthday. I originally said 16 but she's ground me down. She's grown up a lot since starting secondary school and I think she'll cope well. I'll let you know if she dosen't! . I didn't have mine done until I was 33 and I love being able to wear great big silly danglys (not when out with dd though)

A friend pierced my ears with two blocks of ice and a needle when I was 12. I did hers in return as both our mums had said no. I think I'll take DD to have hers done properly

louise35 · 27/07/2006 21:20

Oh god sunnyd that's just brought back a horrible memory from school. I can remember one in biology lesson at high school one of my friends asked me to pierce her ears. She already had three piercings and wanted another. I pierced them with the earrings that she had just taken out and she never flinched. I can still recall the noise it made as it went through, gross

had mine done when i was 5... nagged my mom for ages and she sat me down and explained exactly how much it would hurt and about infections cleaning them and eventually brought me to get them done. i was by no means the first in my class either (was living in germany), when i moved to ireland at 8 there were only 2 girls in my class of 32 who didn't have ear piercings.

will be letting dd get hers done as soon as she asks for them and is old enough to understand how to take care of them
