Wahey we have some potty action!

You may know I have been practising child-led potty training (ie can't be arsed). Today ds had nappy off all morning and I am proud to announce 3 wees and A POO in the potty

Cod will be so proud of us....

So what do I do now? Does he stay in pants except for nap times or can I do pull ups out of the house? I am buggered if I am walking round with one of those potette things.

I used pull-ups at night (still do!) and pants during the day from the moment he was happy to go on the bog. I ditched the potty quite soon, in favour of a padded insert seat for the loo and a step (we bought smiley and rainbow stickers and decorated it)

I took spare pants/trousers out with me for a couple of months - I had to remember to ask him if he needed to go to the loo every half hour for a good few weeks until he started being more reliable about telling me himself. I used pull-ups for very long days out/long journeys.

He's totally reliable during the day now but I can't see the point forcing the issue at night - he'll let me know when he's ready

Ok, our toilet seat is a bizarre shape and none of those insert seats fit into it (I already tried to go straight to the loo but failed)

The other thing is I have already shown that I am not a fit person to be in charge of reminding him to go. I just completely forgot, so it's a good thing he was quite on the ball himself and was able to say when he needed to go.

Thirdly, there are times when I am not really able to give him my full attention or take him to the loo very easily (ie when I am working). I could get one of the other mothers to take him I guess, or take the potty and leave him to it? At the moment he is wearing baggy shorts and no pants, which has worked well, as he is able to manage the whole thing himself, and the absence of pants means he has not forgotten and thought he has a nappy on. Everything is flapping a bit freely though and I know some people get upert about that sort of thing. Hmm.

I would take him out with no nappy, sounds like he?ll be fine. You can always water the bushes if there?s no loo handy. A wee on the church hall floor (you do music classes, non? so I assume held in halls or similar) is hardly the end of the world. It won?t be the first time!

You'll have to stick with the potty then, unless you want to change your loo seat. I used to hold ds1 on the loo when we were out, but he's got used to them now and doesn't bother with his step or his insert seat now (he wees standing up, so it's only poos he sits down for)

2)You might have little accidents for a while, but he'll get the hang of it, the more he gets used to the idea, the more he won't like wetting himself

I'd use pull-ups when you're working, to take the pressure off both of you, but just let him know that just because he's got pull-ups on doesn't mean he can't go to the loo, if he feels the need and manages to ask you in time

I used to have to put ds1 in pull-ups because I was going out for the day with people who were a bit self-centred , so I couldn't guarantee getting him to a loo if he needed it

Anyway, no rush - he's doing fine, isn't he? Plenty of time

Have no idea how things will go once out of the house. I agree Clary, but wouldn't be surprised if someone is offended at the sight of his little willy swinging free. When my friends arrived this afternoon he proudly announced "look at *this"", pulled his trousers down and mooned them all

Oh Franny, it's wonderful... he is doing it naturally because he is ready.

I can't imagine anyone being offended at the sight of a 3yo's little willy. And if someone is, hard cheese!!

Ok, we are just planning to go about our normal routine today. Is that idiotic? He certainly seems to have got it, he went in the potty himself, wiped his willy and put tissue in the loo etc when I was in the shower this morning. However I guess going out to town and groups is a bit different. One idea I had was just to take the potty and some nappies and let him wee in the potty with a nappy laid in? (like a home made Potette?) There are not many toilets in town and I don't know how long I have from when he says "I need a wee".

Have we just had a very lucky beginning? Will we have loads of accidents this week? (I don't mind changing nappies but I loathe little puddles, I must admit)

Also can't see nice bright coloured boy's pants without Bob the bloody builder or Action Man on....GRR

Oh yes, nice little boys' pants are few and far between [angry, you can have grey, black, hkahi, navy, bloody camouflage...or Bob the Builder/robots/Thomas. It is depressing.

I settled for Noddy ones from Mothercare - at least the clours are nice - and Boots do plain white ones.

M+S have coloured plain ones but whenever I go in they are either age 1 -2 or age 15.

Just saw some reasonable looking ones in Next online - showed ds (pack of 5) who said in wonderment "Do you get all those?"

Ok we are now in Pant Nirvana, having bought 5 pairs of boxer shorts in Next. He is sitting on the floor taking each pair on and off again and again and saying "these are my drilling pants" "these are my guitaring pants" "these are my mowing pants" ad infinitum. He has also put the discarded pairs in his play box and says it is his Pant Transporter

We took potty out to Sainsbury's and laid a nappy in it when he needed a wee, crouched hiding behind buggy in street. Seemed to work ok.
