When do toddlers stop napping?

MrBlondesFries · 13/08/2013 16:12

Dc1 is 21 months and generally sleeps 7.30pm-6am at night and 2-2.5 a day nap. Expecting dc2 soon and really relying on dc1 to keep napping.

Generally speaking how long do they keep daytime napping (without it affectin their nighttime sleep?)

Thank you.

I think it depends on the child, dd has always been a crap sleeper. She started phasing out naps at 20 months old (she only slept 30 mins in the day anyway).

She's 2.5 now and doesn't nap at all, I think my friends kids started to loose the nap at about 2 years. Best of luck with dc2.

dancemom · 13/08/2013 16:53

Dd went from two to one naps around her first birthday and stopped napping altogether around her second. However I know plenty children who were still napping when they started school!

attheendoftheday · 13/08/2013 17:18

Dd1 dropped her naps just after her second birthday.

DD1 is 3 and a bit and still naps for us (doesn't nap in childcare). I am dreading her dropping naps at home, because I rely so much on that time after lunch when she and her baby sister both sleep.

KidleysDiddleye · 13/08/2013 17:20

2.6 in our case. I have known parents who tell their toddlers that they still have to have cot time even if they're not sleeping. They put them in there for quiet time with a few books. These are all parents who have a new baby on the way Grin
(I tried but mine would not do that.)

SarahNoDuck · 13/08/2013 17:21

BTW she is a very active child. I find that helps Smile

tumbletumble · 13/08/2013 17:25

DS1 was 2.6 when he dropped his nap.
DD was 4.3!!
DS2 was around 3. Tbh he'd still have one now (age 3.10) given the choice, but then bedtime would be a nightmare, so I discourage him from anything longer than 20 mins.

MrBlondesFries · 13/08/2013 18:22

The general consensus seems to be around 2-2.5 - gulp, that's not that far away, I hope she keeps napping otherwise she'll be up all da and the newborn will be up all night - when will I sleep(!)

MrBlondesFries · 13/08/2013 18:29

DS has just turned 3 and is starting to drop his. Think he might need to catch up at the weekend though.

coffeeandchoc · 13/08/2013 18:32

My 4.4yo still has naps about twice a week, have to limit him to no more than an hour an half though, and my 2.9yo still naps for hour and half every day, which we have to limit. 4yo only dropped his second nap at about 3. So think it completely depends on the child.
Although don't know how he's going to cope with school in 3 Weeks time!

MilkRunningOutAgain · 13/08/2013 18:32

Well I had 4.8 and then forcibly phased out cos of starting school, but continued til 6 at weekends and holidays!

MilkRunningOutAgain · 13/08/2013 18:34

Nb. Yr r was a disaster. Ds was shattered and unable to join in / make friends because of tiredness. Napping is not always. Good thing!

sillyoldfool · 13/08/2013 18:34

DD1 stopped napping at 2.5, DD2 at 18m...
they're all different!

UnicornsPooGlitter · 13/08/2013 18:36

DS is 3 and still naps for nearly 2 hours / day.

According to Healthy sleep habits, happy child, 10% of 3 year olds have 2.5 hours of daytime sleep, 50% have 1.5 hours, and

LauraPashley · 13/08/2013 18:37

Dd1 was 2yrs 11mths, just in time to start (school) nursery.

Dd2 was 18mths...grrrrr and zzzzz!!

CreatureRetorts · 13/08/2013 20:41

Ds is 3.10 and naps a few times a week.

It's quite common for 2 year olds to resist naps but I have heard its a developmental thing. I remember going through that but we kept them up (we just had to sit with ds until he slept) and now finally he's dropping them properly (ie without crashing at 5pm)

valiumredhead · 13/08/2013 21:25

He woke once a night until he was 3 but napping made no difference, in fact if he napped he was up loads in the night.

valiumredhead · 13/08/2013 21:26

Dirty that post was load of rubbishGrin if we cut his nap he woke loads more in the night than not napping.

valiumredhead · 13/08/2013 21:27

Dirty?Confused Ffs stupid phone!

forevergreek · 13/08/2013 21:28

3 years 10 months here and still naps daily

ShowOfHands · 13/08/2013 21:31

DD was 12 months

DS is 23 months and still loves a nap.

StrawberrytallCAKE · 13/08/2013 21:32

Dd1 stopped napping at 3.7 just as I fell pregnant again, useful!! Grin
