Pidj, do the longies have to be a tight fit? Today's promise: find some fleecy pants online to try. So I do one hand wash with lanolin, is that right? ...

NappyHappy · 22/04/2013 11:25

There are quite a few fantastic charity shops near Mums so shall go and have a rummage.

2 & 5am here but he wanted to see what Daddy was doing (getting ready for work) so was messing about.

How was the rest if the night?

How are you and baby B?

rrreow · 22/04/2013 11:40

I was thinking of crocheting a wool soaker! I found this pattern: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/easiest-crochet-wool-soaker-pattern which looks good, although I don't think I have any wool of that thickness (so would have to go yarn shopping.... which is almost as dangerous as nappy shopping). I think I'm going to have a very hard time convincing DH we could use wool though. But I can at least try it on DS2 once he's born as I'll probably be doing most nappy changes and it would look super cute! Any of you crochet/knit your own soakers?

Midori my cats are partial to spiders too. And blue bottles. The slug was pretty disgusting though, it foamed out of his mouth.

BuffyFairyTopsTheTree · 22/04/2013 17:51

Oops, pressed post too soon.

Hope you didn't have too many wake ups last night Pidg. How did your ds do in his cot?

My dd was such a bad sleeper, still not great now but we mostly get 7-8 hrs. Multiple wake ups and she wanted to be attached to my boob for most of it. Started lengthening times between feeds from 10months and then night weaned at 15 months. Boobies sleep until morning Wink

My last order has been shipped. More fluffy post arriving this week Grin

PurplePidjin · 22/04/2013 18:37

R's are huge on him and work really well. Fleece (and synthetic yarns) also let the moisture evaporate but need washing daily instead of lanolising. Proper wool nappy covers are made from 100% wool, no superwash treatments so the hand wash only delicate stuff. Then soak in 1" lansinoh+small squidge baby wash for 30 minutes and hang out to dry. The lanolin reacts with the ammonia in the wee to form soap, meaning they only need washing and re-lanolising when soiled or starting to smell, about 4-6 weeks.

I have some wool but am working on a jumper for him first before crocheting him some Dandelion Dreamers from Ravelry. Made boardies for a friend's dd years ago, the start is tricky because they're done in a round and you have to not twist the foundation chain, but fdc would sort that

BFG, if I'd known I'd have bunged a fleece wrap in - got loads i don't use! You can also put a fleece sleepsuit over a fitted/terry/pf for the same effect.

Since when did i become the fred guru Confused

Buffyfairy, yuck! Grin Our cat is indoors only, so no slugs thank goodness!

I have to admit to being fascinated by wool covers, but I am only just getting my head round everything else, so they will have to wait.

We survived our first day in cloth. We even had a poo and it didn't leak. Hoorah! Smile I felt a bit sad that I had to put disposables back on at night in a way, as we'd run out of cloth by then. I have ordered a couple of packs of 5 bamboozles stretchies, which were brand new and a bit of an ebay bargain too, so I think for now I'll have enough nappies to go full time.

I am going to order a couple of extra wraps and some boosters though. I like the look of the blueberry wraps and have heard they are good, does anyone here use them? I love some of the patterns on them.

rrreow · 23/04/2013 11:09

PP what's fdc? I just finished a stuffed toy for DC2 and am a bit sick of amigurumi. It's one of those things that's boring while you're working on it, but hugely satisfying when it's actually finished. Want to get my teeth into something more interesting now though!

4-6 weeks between washes, that sounds attractive!!

Yuck slugs! Our cat is indoors as well so no slugs luckily, but we live above a pizza/fried chicken takeaway so occasionally we get mice! She tends to play with them thoroughly until their entrails are smeared around the place and then leave them for us as a present

DS only night weaned very recently. We still prepare milk for him in an insulated cup before we go to bed just in case but he usually sleeps through now unless he's poorly. I bf in the night until he was about 8 or 9 months at which point he'd wake up hourly to comfort feed, so at that point we switched to formula in the night so he'd feed if he was hungry but not just keep me awake for comfort. Once he could hold the bottle himself it got easier though as you just wake up, give the bottle to him and go back to sleep.

rrreow · 23/04/2013 11:13

midori1999 yay for Bamboozle bargains! I got most of mine very cheap as well which is great because they're such good nappies and also have good resale value. I like the Blueberry Coveralls and would recommend them. The patterns are gorgeous and they fit nicely over the Bamboozle Stretchies (my DS is on the largest size - you do need to make sure the inner is completely covered by the wrap but you quickly get better at putting it on snugly). For my DS we wouldn't be able to use Blueberries overnight though as they wouldn't be able to fit over a boosted Bamboozle, but this might not be an issue for you depending on your DCs size. If you need more room in the wrap for nighttime I would recommend Motherease Airflow wraps.

PurplePidjin · 23/04/2013 12:47

Foundation Double Crochet - where you work the chain and the first row all in together. I need to master it Confused Soakers etc tend to start by chaining the waist measurement and working down. I love amigurumi but only little stuff - i get bored with big projects (woolly hugs excepted)

OP posts:
rrreow · 23/04/2013 13:57

Ooh excellent that sounds like a good technique to master. Will especially help me as I tend to chain quite loosely and unevenly.

NappyHappy · 23/04/2013 15:45

I've just written a big long reply and baby deleted the lot! Argghhhh.

I'm thinking of night weaning ds3 soon so will either gradually water the formula down or just give him water.

Ds3 takes a beaker of juice to bed with him now and has his mind OK in the day, was in the form of milkshake but I gradually reduced the shake mix til it was just milk as he wouldn't have it from a beaker. Chucked his bottles out a few weeks ago Grin

midori1999 · 23/04/2013 17:05

Oh purplepidjin, that is so sad. I cannot knit, but have replied and hopefully can help in some way.

rrreow · 23/04/2013 17:17

Sad I think I have some odds & ends of the cashmerino so will see if I can crochet a square this week.

NappyHappy · 23/04/2013 17:23

I'll do a square Pidj, I've got needles all over the place so shall check later.

Can't even begin to imagine what she's going through. Sad

PurplePidjin · 23/04/2013 18:12

Make sure you PM RatherBeOnThePiste so she knows to expect you Thanks

Already sorted lovely Grin she PM'd me earlier.

I can't believe how quiet it is with the boys in bed.

Not that it'll last!

PurplePidjin · 24/04/2013 04:19

How long did you get?

OP posts:
midori1999 · 24/04/2013 08:11

rrreow I'm sorry, I wasn't ignoring you. I typed out a big long reply yesterday and it's not here, so goodness knows what happened! Thanks for the reply to my post about the blueberry's. Smile I'm going to order some.

We had our first overnight in cloth yesterday. No leaks, which was great, but we also had our second poo in cloth and I noticed that for the second time it had leaked over the side of the liner onto the nappy/booster. Is this normal? The liners I am using are these ones www.thenappylady.co.uk/liners/ultra-liners.html and they are very wide, wide enough to cover the whole nappy when I put it on, but it's kind of 'bunching up' between putting it on and taking it off. I wondered if I was doing something wrong? It just means some solids are left on the nappy. Any ideas?

rrreow · 24/04/2013 10:36

midori1999 remind me how old is your DC? Paper liners do tend to shift or bunch up sometimes. It also depends on the brand - Little Lamb are more smooth & slidey than Bummis, I don't have experience of any other brands. A little bit of solids on the nappy isn't a problem (just always make sure you do a separate rinse cycle before putting on the main wash), if you really wanted to you could scrape it off over the toilet. When using a two part nappy I sometimes let the liner stick out over the sides/back a little bit, so it's held in place by the edge of the shaped nappy. Then just make extra sure everything is within the wrap. You can't do that with an AIO though as you'd create leaks. It also really depends on whether they do a poo when they've been changed recently (usually goes into the liner perfectly) or if they've had the nappy on for a while (can be messy). It's a bit hit & miss! Another solution would be to use fleece liners if that works for you at all (it doesn't for us as the bathroom is on a different floor from where we change nappies).

I just realised I am tying this reply about poo while I'm eating Grin Stuff really does change once you have kids.

NappyHappy · 24/04/2013 14:43

Til 11ish then every half hour til 3.30! Shock

But I've managed to now the grass and send fluffy post!

I 'lol' in your face sleep. I wish. Wink

Was your night better?

NappyHappy · 24/04/2013 14:47

My boys poops do the same. Liners bunch up but catches most of the matter, using Little Lambs.

Ds2 walked the 1/2 mile back from the post office bless him, his waddle is hilarious Grin

Mental note, do not water ds3's night milk down. Confused

midori1999 · 24/04/2013 16:29

Thankyou both. DD is 22 months. I may try fleece liners then. Are you Little Lambs one the fleece ones NappyHappy? In the meantime, I'll try the leaving the liner sticking out the side in the bamboozles if I can. She must be a very light wetter, which I think is making things easier for me as I don't think I even needed the extra booster in the nappy for night. I bet the next baby makes up for it... Grin

NappyHappy, how old is your DS? You may find he suddenly starts to sleep through when you least expect it. DD slept the odd night but mostly woke every few hours, sometimes hourly, then at about 8 months she started waking hourly every night and I really thought I might die, it was awful. At 10 months she just suddenly started sleeping through. Nothing had changed, she just started sleeping. She still wakes occasionally, but hardly ever.

I have to say, I am loving my cloth and am eagerly awaiting the others so I can cloth full time. I wish so much I had done it sooner. I'm afraid of becoming an addict though, such pretty/cute nappies and wraps out there... Blush

rrreow · 24/04/2013 17:35

NH Shock that is awful! I hope it gets better soon. DS still very much needed his milk at that age (as much as I felt 'shouldn't you be sleeping through, shouldn't you be night weaned by now'.. those should-thoughs are almost as damaging as the sleepless nights!). His sleep was the worst around 8-9mo. Gradually got better. I mean you take it one step at the time don't you. First it's great if he 'only' wakes up 3 times a night, then you want it to be 2, then 1 (at nearly 24mo we sometimes still get 1) and then sleeping through. For the lack of medal icon I hereby give you some Flowers for managing to mow the lawn & go to the post office!
